To have taken all this time off?

I'm just having a bit of a flap and wonder if other will think i'm taking the piss with the amount of leave I have over christmas and new year.

Most of my colleagues are finishing on Friday and will be back on the 2nd. I've used a bit of my holiday allowance so that I finish on Thursday and come back on Monday the 7th.

My justification for this was I'll be travelling to scotland to spend that time with my family, I don't go abroad so I'm unlikely to use that holiday time during the rest of the year, and it ensures my flights to/from scotland will be relatively cheap compared to flying when most people are getting back to work.

I just felt like a bit of a prat when a colleague looked at the calendar and announced "wow look at how long Binchicken is off for, she might as well not come back!" (in a jokey way, but it made me wonder if people would think i'm taking the piss a bit.) :-/

You have obviously never worked for a local authority Smile

Ffsnosexallowed · 18/12/2018 20:49

Not at all! I come off on Friday and am not back until the 7th - like you I'm visiting family. Its just 2 weeks!

DollyPomPoms · 18/12/2018 20:50

You are using your annual leave. Others could have done the same. Don’t feel guilty.

MakeAHouseAHome · 18/12/2018 20:50

What!? It is your a/l and aslong as it has been approved by your manager you can use it however you wish!

SantasBassoon · 18/12/2018 20:52

You're using annual leave. How on earth could that be seen as taking the piss? None of your colleagues will think anything of it other than that it's a nice long break, so there's no need for you to come up with justification for it!

Binchicken · 18/12/2018 20:53

Haha thanks guys, sorry this is my first non-retail type job and I guess the first time i've ever been able to have this amount of time off over christmas so I didn't know if it was normal. I'm relatively new to the place as well so still working out my colleagues senses of humour. Yes it is annual leave i'm using.

It’s annual leave that you are legally entitled to!

Sarcelle · 18/12/2018 20:53

Who cares what they say/think? If your line manager is fine with it, it's nothing to do with them.

Polarbearflavour · 18/12/2018 20:53

Well done for leaving retail hell OP! Xmas Grin

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/12/2018 20:54

Yanbu. I work part time, finish tomorrow and go back on the 8th!

VietnameseCrispyFish · 18/12/2018 20:54

No it’s fine! It’s your annual leave. You can use it as you see fit as long as your manager has authorised it. Your colleague was just being lighthearted, they know it’s your leave, leave you’re all entitled to, that they can book in when works for them. It’s just a silly thing people say to be funny and bond at work.

You could have taken your entire four weeks of leave at once and it’d still be fine and between only you and your manager. You’re overthinking this.

Binchicken · 18/12/2018 20:55

Thanks guys, phew XD I do tend to over analyse things and get a bit anxious haha!

My DH saves his annual leave just for Christmas. They're off anyway from the 21st to 6th Jan but DH extends his and had his last shift last week.
No one bats an eye. That's what your leave is for. Taking it for a break from work.

madcatladyforever · 18/12/2018 20:55

My colleague with small children is doing exactly the same, none of us mind in the least.

cheeseandcrackers · 18/12/2018 20:57

You get the same amount of annual leave as everyone else, it's entirely up to you how you take it, assuming your line manager agrees and it's not putting undue pressure on colleagues.
I'm off from Thursday until the 7th. No one has batted an eyelid - in fact most are doing the same

Yidette86 · 18/12/2018 20:59

It's your annual leave to use as you wish, it's all been approved so no issue there... Enjoy your time off.

I have many staff that take a few weeks off to visit their families in their home countries, and good for them.

VietnameseCrispyFish · 18/12/2018 21:00

It’s worth reminding yourself your leave is for you to use however works best for you. Same for your coworkers. I’m guessing you feel a bit weird having this time off as you’re used to retail where the holiday season is nonstop work?

I’ve chosen to just have xmas day and Boxing Day off. And New Year’s Day. I’m working the rest through choice as as much as I like xmas, I’d rather save my leave for something meaningful to me. I don’t remotely begrudge my colleagues who have 2+ weeks off coming up! And they don’t begrudge the way I use mine in spits and spats to attend events. I can often have one day off per week for a month at a time. It’s all good.

Cath2907 · 18/12/2018 21:03

I always take 2 weeks off over Xmas. I am off Fri to the 7th. Normal for me!

halfwitpicker · 18/12/2018 21:04

Same here. Last day today. It's as if I am MAJORLY taking the piss.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 18/12/2018 21:13

I finished last Friday and don't go back until 7th January. It's my annual leave to do with as I wish. We also got given a few days too so I've got 3 weeks off but in used 7 days leave.
Enjoy your break!

BlueJava · 18/12/2018 21:14

If you have the leave to use then no problem! I often combine with a public holiday to get longer too! Last year I used almost all my leave in summer and had 4 weeks in Thailand! :)

Doilooklikeatourist · 18/12/2018 21:15

Last day at work Saturday 22nd , back on Saturday 5th
Can’t wait

Almostfifty · 18/12/2018 21:21

My DH used to keep a week of annual leave just in case we had an emergency with one of the DC, as we had no parental help nearby. It ended up he'd have at least a fortnight off every Christmas, which meant we could have a bit of time together and get everything sorted.

Have a lovely break.

munchbunch12 · 18/12/2018 21:23

It's your Annual Leave to use when you choose. Personally, I'm 'breaking up' on 21/12 and back at work on 9/1/19 Grin

Just relax and enjoy it!

SparklyLeprechaun · 18/12/2018 21:24

Total non issue, don't worry about it. If they approved the leave then that's all you should care about. I'm off from tomorrow until the 7th and I'll take 3 weeks off over Easter.
