If you’re part time you should work on days off

Having a slight disagreement with my boss today and wondered what other people thought.

I work PT (20 hours a week) my boss said today ‘when you work PArt time you’re expected to do work from home when you’re not in the office’

I disagree, I’m not paid for more than my hours. I have 3 children, on my days off I don’t have time to work! I get my work done on my days there. Anything that pops up can wait imo. I’m not paid incredibly generously either - just over minimum wage.

I don’t get sick pay or holiday pay (whole other story!) and thought it was bloody cheeky that he’d suggest I should be working on my days off. He said it would be expected at any other company and is the norm.

Opinions?

Thanks for your responses, seems pretty universal that it’s not expected!
It started as he was sending me details to call people (advertising) on my days off, and then was shocked when I was calling them back when I got into work next.
I always reply to emails, but anything that requires more physical work is done on my days in the office.
Glad I’m not just a lazy fucker Grin

After a particularly bad experience in a work place where my good will was totally taken advantage of and I landed up working around 70 hours a week, I categorically will not work hours I'm not paid for now. (For reference, I wasn't in a senior management role either.)

If you're not paid for it, you don't work it. You are contracted to 20 hours. You do 20 hours and that's it.

CountessVonBoobs · 18/12/2018 18:00

This is why I have a work phone, and why I switch it off at the end of Thursday and don't switch it back on until Monday morning. Nobody is dying, and I'll be damned if I'm working full time hours for part time pay.

EggysMom · 18/12/2018 18:01

You shouldn't even reply to emails - if you are contracted for 20 hours, you work for 20 hours.

And you will be entitled to a proportion of paid holiday too.

jelliebelly · 18/12/2018 18:01

Absolutely not expected in the team I run - 40 people and at least half work some kind of flexible/part time hours -maybe easier to manage in a large team though

What a knob Xmas Grin

Almondio · 18/12/2018 18:04

Ask him to show you where this is in your contract, or ask him to put it in writing then take it to HR. He's talking absolute hogwash. He'll be laughed out of the office.

Ohyesiam · 18/12/2018 18:05

I suppose if you wanted overtime you could.

ViragoKnows · 18/12/2018 18:05

Definitely talking hillocks 😏

Ask HR to “clarify”.

itscalledwineflu · 18/12/2018 18:06

How strange that he expects you to work on your days off . It's like some people think the world revolves around that company and that anyone has other things to do besides work baffles them . Just firmly say no you are contracted to so many hours after that you don't work . And what's this about holiday & sick pay ? Check the .gov website it's 28 days including bank holidays per year for full time so you will be pro rata make sure you get paid holidays .

Acopyofacopy · 18/12/2018 18:06

Why are you even replying to emails? You only work 20 hours, if your boss wants you to work more he should pay you overtime or offer more hours.

StealthPolarBear · 18/12/2018 18:07

That's why I asked. If full timers do ft + extra then surely it's OK for part timers to do extra, in the samr sort of ratio?
But at just more than min wage I think it's unreasonable to expect that.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 18/12/2018 18:07

He's talking hillocky bollocks.

CountFosco · 18/12/2018 18:08

On a low wage job checking your emails is above and beyond already. I do work around my hours but I earn several multiples of what you earn. And my last boss was very much of the opinion that you do the work in the time available and if it doesn't fit you need to be given more time to do the work.

LakieLady · 18/12/2018 18:08

He's a CF.

Not only could working extra hours bring your hourly rate to below minimum wage, but you are ENTITLED to 28 days paid leave (20 days + 8 public holidays), pro rata, according to the hours you work.

myidentitymycrisis · 18/12/2018 18:12

I moved jobs recently to a part time role because I was nearing burnout.
Now I try to make a conscious effort not to think about work when I am not there.

Also they operate a TOIL system by which to log extra time worked when not at home. That clearly defines when I am working and when I am not afaic.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/12/2018 18:12

He is a hillocky pillock who needs a wallop!

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2018 18:12

Absolute hillocks.

I’m PT (3 days) - I’m not expected to do anything on days off and if I am asked to do extra (conference/training etc) then I’m paid for it of get TOIL.

I’m also paid well above NMW.

I feel like the less you’re paid the more is expected sometimes.

ginswinger · 18/12/2018 18:13

I pay all my part time staff holiday pay. It's the law and how you retain staff. There's a calculator on the HMRC website for employers to work out how much they must offer and no reason why employees can't access it.

Troels · 18/12/2018 18:13

I believe you are entitled to holiday pay too. He's a right CF.

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2018 18:14

And yes, why no holiday pay?

Fartingisfun · 18/12/2018 18:16

Your boss is a bullshitter.

If you are expected to do stuff on your non working days you should claim overtime or time in lieu for it.. plus prorated holiday entitlement.

Or tell him to do one....

letsdolunch321 · 18/12/2018 18:16

What a plank your boss is 🙄

NurseButtercup · 18/12/2018 18:17

Definitely not, can I suggest you add; find a new job onto your new years resolutions list?

Ted27 · 18/12/2018 18:18

er Nope. I work part time three days a week. Occasionally if I've been working on a report or complicated email I might take it home to give it a final check, or I might log on to see if a colleague has picked something up, but only for an hour or so. I'm also 'managment' so a certain amount of extra hours is expected.
But I certainly wouldn't expect my admin staff to do so, particularly if they were on minimum wage
