My 15 y/o Ds has an ingrown toenail removed Thursday, it's healing nicely and he isn't in too much pain but can only wear his trainers as his school shoes hurt his toe. He hasn't been back to school as of yet as it is pouring with rain and his trainers are not waterproof. I don't think it would be a good idea for him to be in school with a wet foot all day after having this done. His Dad is saying I'm being ridiculous and he just has to go and if I was that worried I should just pay for him to have a taxi there and back. (I can't afford to do that! he won't pay for it either)
I don't drive, his dad is my ex and he is working so can't take him I just think it's nearly Christmas what's the harm in him staying off?
So wise mumsnetters AIBU?

Polythene bag on foot then trainer?

loubluee · 18/12/2018 17:24

It should be fine as long as it’s covered properly. Exdp was back in work the next day when he had his whole nail removed. Delivery driver so rushing around in the rain.
Disclaimer:- he’s sat here that was his opinion!!

EskSmith · 18/12/2018 17:26

Wellies to get to school then trainers inside? Ask if he can stay in at break time.

jessstan2 · 18/12/2018 17:29

I'd keep him off until he's better. He won't be comfortable at school until it is.

adviceonthepox · 18/12/2018 17:31

He doesn't own a pair of wellies I don't imagine many city dwelling 15 year olds do Confused
I didn't think of putting his foot in a bag which I'm a bit shocked off tbh as I've done that often when he was in plaster having his tendons stretched over the yearsBlush
I'll try that tomorrow!

Totally depends. If he's in Year 11, and doing GCSE's in the summer, I'd be sending him in. If he's in Year 10, then not quite so bad, but really should go to school if possible.

adviceonthepox · 18/12/2018 17:35

He's year 10 we have google drive and his teachers have been setting work on there for him and his graphics teacher sent work home with his brother.

Is he doing school work at home, I agree over a week off during year 11 is a long time.

Villanellesproudmum · 18/12/2018 17:36

Oh cross post, not so bad then I’d say.

Seniorcitizen1 · 18/12/2018 17:37

Of course he should go to school ffs.

Dariosa · 18/12/2018 17:38

It can surely only be two or three days till the Christmas holidays now anyway?

I think if he’s already missed 4 days then 2 or three more won’t make a massive difference, and it sounds like he’s getting all the catch up work. Let him have the Christmas break to recover fully.

agentdaisy · 18/12/2018 17:51

I'd have bought wellies when he had it done and sent him to school on Friday with paracetamol in his bag.

I had the same thing done when I was at school but in both feet and had to go to school the day after in trainers. Yes it was uncomfortable and hurt a bit but school is important.

usernameusername01 · 18/12/2018 17:59

In Year 10 they still cover GCSE content, it's not just in Year 11.

Send him to school, can't believe he's been off this long already!

Cherries101 · 18/12/2018 18:09

I agree with @agentdaisy. Year 11 students should miss as little school as possible. It’s your job as the parent to enable this.

adviceonthepox · 18/12/2018 18:41

Year 10 not 11 I love how some of you are incapable of reading my updates Hmm
I've already said I would be sending him tomorrow with a bag around his foot!

Louiselouie0890 · 18/12/2018 18:42

I wouldn't put it in a bag. Unless it's not in there long. When I had one you never wrapped or put it in anything as sweat and damp increased infection.

JacquesHammer · 18/12/2018 18:43

I wouldn’t put it in a bag - will make it warm and damp which will encourage infection.

I’d also be worried about it getting walked on too!

dottyp0104 · 18/12/2018 18:45

I don't think a week is unreasonable for that kind of procedure to be honest. I would probably wait take the rest of week off

FrancesFryer · 18/12/2018 18:48

Is he going to be allowed in class with trainers on, or will he be sent to isolation?

chumbal · 18/12/2018 18:54

I wouldn't because someone may tread on his newly op'd toe!

Dd had hers done before Summer hols for this reason.

Hope his toe heals Wink

adviceonthepox · 18/12/2018 19:26

The bag would only be for going to and from and school but I think I'm probably right with original instinct and just let him stay home. Thursday and Friday are prize giving and rewards days with Christmas films and treats so he isn't really missing anything important on those days.
I would hate for him to end up getting an infection or as pp said get his toe stepped on.
