To think you should be able to opt of this in body donation?

So I would like to donate my body to science, however when reading through the forms it says you are also consenting to donatin your body to the cosmetics industry. I know I won’t be aware of this as I’ll be dead etc but it just doesn’t sit right with me. I’d be happy to help a medical student learn how to cut and operate but I don’t want my body to be used for someone learning how to do a nose job for example. They are two very different industries imo.

AIBU?

Is that in the uk? Sounds odd to me!

Sausagefingers9 · 18/12/2018 17:00

Yes!
Happy to be corrected if I’ve taken it the wrong way.

Perhaps remember tbst nose jobs aren't always just to look prettier?? People doing reconstruction surgery also need to learn how to put a nose back together agaib

No idea how these things work, but wouldn’t your body likely be used for multiple things, so even if there was a cosmetic element there may be subsequent benefits from work on internal organs etc.

And Rhinoplasty and Breast Surgery aren’t always exclusively for cosmetic reasons.

UpstartCrow · 18/12/2018 17:01

No I don't think you are BU, but I've never heard of that and wonder if its just that teaching hospital. I think we should have some say if a use goes against our ethics.

I have specifically donated mine to my hospital consultant to be used for investigation into the causes and treatment for the condition I have.
I have included a clause about who owns the results of the research. I think they should be made freely available to other researchers and not belong to a private company to be used for their profit.

I cant donate my organs, but if I did I would want to place some restrictions on who received my uterus and eggs.

DianaBlythe · 18/12/2018 17:02

How have you gone about this? I would contact your local university medical school. They should have their own forms.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/12/2018 17:03

A Surgeon learning to rebuild a nose, or do a nose job is not only for cosmetic reasons. A surgeon is a qualified surgeon regardless if they choose the private or public sector when qualified, cosmetic or necessary surgery is still surgery.
Are you sure it doesn't mean cosmetic company for product testing.

Sausagefingers9 · 18/12/2018 17:04

Does it change depending which part of the country you are in? I had to email my nearest university who take part in body donation, then they sent me a very long form to read through and sign. There was nowhere I could make a clause in this which seems a massive shame.

I know that often reconstructive surgery is used to help someone rather than for vanity, but it wasn’t just that. It was the whole cosmetics thing. I don’t want to sign up for that. I think that should be an optional extra for those who don’t mind.

Many people have rhinoplasty or septo-rhinoplasty surgery for broken noses.
Many people have breast surgery after mastectomies or breast reduction.
These aren't just for cosmetic reasons.
Unless you mean that bits of your tissue will be used in development tests for the beauty industry?

DoJo · 18/12/2018 17:05

But not all cosmetic surgery is done for reasons of vanity - plenty of people need cosmetic surgery after accidents, burns etc and the surgeons who do that have to learn somehow. And, as far as I understand it (although I may be mistaken), the truly cosmetic only surgery side of things pays surgeons who can then 'afford' to take the pay hit to work on NHS cases as well.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/12/2018 17:07

I would query it. I doubt it has anything to do with the type of surgery practised on you.

Good on you for donating. I think I would be happy doing this for scientific reasons and a free funeral, do you get a free disposal when they're finished.

Kikidelivers · 18/12/2018 17:08

I have just been on the NHS organ donation website and find absolutely NO reference to the cosmetic industry whatsoever.

What’s your source?

greenritta · 18/12/2018 17:08

Wait is cosmetics industry the industry of creating cosmetics or is it also plastic surgery?
Don't go try that terrible lipstick colour on me, dead or alive!

SleepingStandingUp · 18/12/2018 17:09

I think you need clarity onwhay"to the cosmetics inustry" entails. Surely to cosmetic surgery is fine, but other uses not so?

Kikidelivers · 18/12/2018 17:09

Pretty irresponsible to post such a thread without being damn sure if the situation

You may put people off

Ohyesiam · 18/12/2018 17:13

I would have thought the cosmetic industry referred to makeup and skin care rather than cosmetic surgery.

Sausagefingers9 · 18/12/2018 17:15

Well I would hope anyone considering donating would read through the forms themselves rather taking the word off a randomer on the internet.

I’m just going to look back through as it was a while ago. I’ve just been reminded by a book I’m reading about cadavers

Kikidelivers · 18/12/2018 17:18

You still haven’t told us your source

Kikidelivers · 18/12/2018 17:18

You say reading through the forms.

The nhs organ donation forms?

Cautionsharpblade · 18/12/2018 17:18

Plastic surgery, as others have said, isn’t purely cosmetic, certainly not on the NHS.

Privately-run courses on cosmetic surgery (eg face lifts) use frozen heads bought in from abroad as it’s illegal to sell body parts in the U.K.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/12/2018 17:20

You'll be dead. I assure you that by then you won't care what they do with your body.

Grin Just what I was going to put.

The only person I know has had nose surgery was a lady whose nose was battered to a pulp by her abusive ex. She needed it to breathe properly.
