To not regularly vacuum when you have pets.

Bit of a random one. I know that a home with dogs will never be completely hair free. I have a white dog, her hair ends up everywhere. Generally I vacuum every day to keep on top of it, sometimes I skip a day but every other day at the latest.

My DM has 7 cats and 2 dogs. She never really vacuums other than a brief go over once a week. She does work but surely a pet home should be kept on top of? You go over there and hair ends up everywhere. All
Over you clothes, socks, anything the kids take. I dread eating there as you find hair on your plates and cups. DD and OH is allergic to cats so it limits the amount of time we can spend there anyway. They sleep on the beds, the beds aren’t changed very often. I didn’t realise how unhygienic this was when I lived there. There’s hair everywhere. I believe this is why I’m quite fussy with cleaning now. I would offer to help my mum to clean but she isn’t incapable. She’s in her 40’s, only works part time and has a husband and my grown up brother and teenage siblings live there (who could muck in).

MIl isn’t much better she has two dogs and there’s hair built up everywhere...

People can live how they please but I feel it’s really hygienic when the kids go over. When DD was crawling (thankfully not now) she would crawl around her floor and be ridiculously grubby afterwards. Her hands would be all sticky and dog hairs stuck to them. 🤮

Aibu? I feel guilty but I really begrudge going over ae I feel grimey afterwards. It’s not just pet hair, it’s generally not a clean home. I swear it wasn’t as bad when I lived there several years ago now. She didn’t have as many pets when I was a kid!

People hoover twice a DAY....? Once a day maybe but twice?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 18/12/2018 23:43

I have 3 cats, carpets and a velvet sofa and hoover and brush the sofa most days. I can’t stand a dirty house.

Butteredghost · 19/12/2018 00:30

I'm no clean freak but to me vaccuming at least once every two days is just part of having a pet.

In some ways having a pet helps me to have a cleaner house. I can't get away with bad habits, for example, clothes must go straight in to laundry basket and after washing get put away immediately (cat will make a bed or worse a toilet out of them otherwise). Also clutter is banned to make vaccuming easier.

I was going to say would getting your mum a cordless vaccum might help, they are so quick and easy to use you are much more likely to do a quick daily vac. But it sounds like she has other cleaning issues so maybe it wouldnt help.

I have a St. Bernard cross. I hoover at least once a day and brush the carpet before hoovering at least every 2 days but more like every other day. I also wipe the skirting boards every time I hoover. I don't want a house that people don't want to visit!

Bluebonnieblue · 19/12/2018 06:24

I can't really get that fussed about pet hair to be honest. I never understand people who think it's disgusting. Maybe I'm disgusting 🤷 (fwiw I have a dog and sweep 3 times a week but that's because I have light coloured flooring. Maybe I'd sweep less if it was dark. Who knows.)

gamerwidow · 19/12/2018 06:40

I have two cats and Hoover once a week. By the end of the week there is noticable cat hair on the stairs but everywhere else is fine certainly no cat hair on sofas etc.
Don’t really care what others think to be honest, no one has to come in my house if they don’t want to.

adaline · 19/12/2018 06:49

We have a dog and two cats and vacuum every day or every other day. But three days a week there's nobody home due to work/doggy daycare so it's not as bad as it could be.

StrawberryTraveller · 19/12/2018 08:50

Yup this is horrible. My parents have several pets, all furry. They rarely hoover. the sofas are thick in hairs.. Ergh. I hardly ever visit, usually arrange to meet out elsewhere.

We have had two cats since the summer. I'm probably semi-paranoid due to parents house, but i would hate the house to smell 'catty' or people not want to stay. We hoover now most days (floors and sofas), wash tile floors at least every other day, and all surfaces wiped regularly. House aired daily even though its -9 where we live at the moment.

TheRhythmessCarolMan · 19/12/2018 10:05

Good point @clary
You've just inspired me to get my vacuum out more often! Grin

fullforce · 19/12/2018 10:17

My FIL has years worth of cat fur matted into his cream carpets and it’s enough to stop me from visiting🤮 My neighbour has a giant Alsatian and I’ve only heard the hoover a handful of times in 2 years. I dread to think what their carpets are like since they malt the worst!

fullforce · 19/12/2018 10:21

The cat hair even finds its way into the fridge and the butter at FIL’s since he doesn’t clean at all. All the cat hairs in the food made me vomit on a few occasions, especially since it had just had worms. Yep, FIL’s cat had worms and he didn’t even so much as wipe down the kitchen side where it had been wiping it’s arse! He’s completely capable just living a lazy bachelor lifestyle. It’s okay if you actually clean your house and just don’t hoover hair but when it’s hair in everything it gets a bit much

JKCR2017 · 19/12/2018 11:13

I always try and find time to vacuum every day. Not just because of dog hair, but because I have two messy children too! If I didn’t have children I’d probably get away with vacuuming less! I find the more often you do something, the less time it takes each time as it’s kept on top of.

My mums cats sit on the kitchen table, the sides etc!! The hair just flies around everywhere!

I also have ploofy cat. He needs to be brushed daily but I don’t hoover daily. The house gets done once a week by the cleaner and maybe once by me or DH. It isn’t noticeably hairy or crumby Hmm. Or maybe it is and we are skanks?

gamerwidow · 19/12/2018 11:17

I’d like to think that if I didn’t work I’d do more housework but I don’t think that’s true.

Alaimo · 19/12/2018 11:28

I have 2 cats and only vacuum once a week. I do tend to clean hairs of the sofa and armchair with a lint roller on a daily basis. Having said that, I do tend to vacuum before we have friends or family visiting, because while I don't mind a few cat hairs too much, I appreciate guests might not feel the same way.

MommOfTwo · 19/01/2019 14:43

We have a chow and he sheds like there's no tomorrow. I really find it gross when the floors are filled with fur and my son goes playing already. It's really difficult to balance keeping the home clean while being a hands-on mom as well. Even if we have the Roomba, we can schedule its cleaning but it's just a quick fix. A few hours later, pethair's back on the floor, it does good cleaning though.

CSIblonde · 19/01/2019 16:28

Eugh. I couldn't bear all that hair. My DM was a bit OCD so she wiped towels gently over cats scent glands to get her scent on them then put them in her favourite spots & Dcat went straight for the towels every time. I've done same with my floofy girl but with a folded fleece throw in her two 'places'. She knows they are her 'blankie' & won't settle at all unless they are in her spots.

Somerville · 19/01/2019 16:32

Pets and carpets are a no go for me. We installed all hard flooring downstairs before getting a dog. (Carpets upstairs but dog not allowed.) then vacuumed or swept them every day, and washed them three times a week. I’m far from a clean freak but pet hair is grim.

Gemgems1518 · 19/01/2019 16:39

I have a dog and only hoover properly once a week but I sweep in the mean time and dog isn't allowed in bedrooms or on the sofa. I use the handheld hoover every other day for crumbs etc so that gets some pet hair up too but I mainly just sweep the biggest traffic areas and hoover top to bottom once a week.
