To take a virus to my family for Christmas

DS came down with Hand Foot and Mouth on Friday, confirmed by GP. DH and I had bad throats but otherwise ok, now today I suddenly have chills and aches (unsure if it's related but probably?). We're due to go on Saturday and I need to cancel the booking very soon if we won't go. My family would be very disappointed, but I don't want to make them ill and they can be a bit cavalier about infections. I feel like I'm being unreasonable whether we go or not because the timeline makes us "maybe" contagious. What do you think? I've asked some of them for their opinion and just had it shrugged off.

I was asking about the driving because if you are using public transport then it's not just you and your relatives you stand a chance of infecting, it's everyone else on the plane/train/coach.

Oh right, no we're being driven down by someone else. I just wish the contagious period was clearer. Obviously nobody else needs to go near his nappies, which seems to be the biggest risk.

I HAd it a fortnight ago, just like you had, chills and aches for one day then showed symptoms the next day (scalp and a few spots on hands and feet, they felt like splinters) NHS says you're contagious for 5 days after showing symptoms. It also says not to keeps kids off school if they feel well enough to go.
I avoided vulnerable people (cancelled a weekend away with friends who have relatives undergoing chemo, not worth the risk for me) s'up to you ultimately.

@applesisapple5 - is that 5 days from the start of the symptoms or the end of them?
