DH is having conniptions. Apparently this is a very important issue. Please help settle this dispute about which is more common.

What you need is a proper skillet. Then there is no need for fat in the pan as long as your skillet is properly seasoned and hot before you add the meat.
Also, tell your dh oily pork is an abomination, if you need to add a bit of fat it could only be butter.

I don't fry anything, apart from to sauté the odd onion for a recipe. Why would you fry ham? Surely it gets thinly sliced for use with salad or in sandwiches and any "chunk" left would be cubed an used in a risotto or a quiche?

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 18/12/2018 12:07

I fry everything in butter, except DH fried eggs as he prefers them in oil. Don't think I've ever fried ham though.

I don't fry leftover ham, but if I did, it would be in butter.

I have been known to fry christmas pudding in brandy butter.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/12/2018 12:15

We sometimes fry leftover cooked gammon (always loads) for breakfast, just enough to heat it through and have with eggs, etc.
But definitely oil, a very little, just to stop it sticking.

But I don't know why people are acting like they've never heard of fried ham.

Maybe because the HAVEN'T heard of it? I've never heard of frying ham. The way I'd cook ham is:

Toast one side of bread.
lightly toast the other.
Remove from grill & butter bread.
Add ham to one slice & mustard to the other. Maybe cheese.
Stick both back under the grill.
Remove, add together to make a sandwich.

But I don't know why people are acting like they've never heard of fried ham.

That would be because I have never heard of anyone ever cooking ham. Ham is already cooked, bacon is not. Hmm

megletthesecond · 18/12/2018 13:06

I have never fried ham.

halfwitpicker · 18/12/2018 13:08

Wtaf is all this never frying ham bollocks?

If you fry leftover cooked ham it's delicious. Better than warming in the soggy microwave.

To answer your question, op, you need to use oil as it has a higher burning point that budder

You're welcome.

Always butter, and cut into small cubes ! We, for no real reason, call it fram (fried ham) in our household, and it’s a post Christmas delicacy!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 18/12/2018 14:14

I always fry bacon in butter. You just watch it carefully to make sure it doesn't burn. It's delicious.

DearTeddyRobinson · 18/12/2018 16:06

Both! Oil to make sure it doesn't burn/stick, butter for the butteriness Smile

bellabasset · 18/12/2018 16:09

I wouldn't normally fry ham, I might add chunks of ham to bubble and squeak.

You could use a mix of olive oil and butter to fry ham in, butter for flavour and olive oil to reduce the saturated fat.

Haworthia · 18/12/2018 16:10

He’s being a controlling prick.

I’m sure it was delicious fried in butter.

I wouldn’t usually fry ham, but can see why your DD would if she was looking for a bacon substitute.

Seriously, why is he turning this into a row? Hmm
