to shave my whole head?

I'm due to have decompression surgery for TN. Quite scary having brain surgery and I've been thinking about the part where I have to have my head shaved!

I'll have to have about a quarter of my head shaved. I have very curly Afro hair that will take years so grow back.

WIB stupid to just shave my whole head so my hair is all the same length? I'm really toying with the idea. But DP not happy about it as he loves my hair... he doesn't mind too much either way but he didn't do well hiding his facial expression when I suggested it!

Thoughts?

I hope your sugery goes well Flowers

I don't think it's a stupid idea if it would make you feel better. Maybe when you grow it back out, you can rock some stylish short cuts.

Disquieted1 · 17/12/2018 23:04

Don't shave your entire head - keep your eyebrows!

Best wishes with the surgery.

cushioncuddle · 17/12/2018 23:04

I can understand why you would. It would grow back even rather than having a lump much shorter for a very long time. Makes sense to me.

All the best with your treatment. Thanks

Do what makes you feel the most comfortable

Could you have a fashionable undercut done?

SpiritedLondon · 17/12/2018 23:14

There’s someone I follow on Instagram who has had shaved her head for medical treatment and she looks gorgeous. It’s also far more interesting in my mind than most longer styles but I appreciate that this is the least of your worries right now. How about a pixie cut rather than a full head shave so the shaved part of your head is less noticeable and can “ catch up” reasonably quickly. Men can be a bit sentimental about long hair I find - so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Needs must. Good luck whatever you decide

MissMotoGP · 17/12/2018 23:14

@Disquieted1 haha oh yes! Forgot about those...

@Calzone not with my Afro hair! I dread to think what it'd look like growing back!

Thanks everyone. Very nervous!

@SpiritedLondon again, a pixie cut just wouldn't work with my Afro! Thank you though. I need it!

How long is your hair now? Is it all fairly short and tightly curled, or is it relaxed and worn long?

SpiritedLondon · 17/12/2018 23:23

Go the full hog then and own it.

to shave my whole head?
MrsTerryPratcett · 17/12/2018 23:26

It's your head so if you want to, do it.

If you don't, which quarter of your head is being shaved I know how silly I sound?

Ollivander84 · 17/12/2018 23:29

Stupid suggestion but have you seen nappily ever after on Netflix? It's worth a watch, basically how her hair is important to her and the struggle with Afro hair... I won't spoil it!

My husband had decompression surgery for chiari a while ago & the actual scar was quite low down at the back of his head - I did loads of research at the time & some girls put their hair into 2 plaits & only shaved the bit at the back required for surgery. I'm not sure if this is an option for you but all the very best for your op x

explodingkitten · 17/12/2018 23:35

My mum had almost half of her head shaved for a surgery. They left a little bit at the front and in front of her ears. At first she hated it till they told her she could wear a scarf over it the first couple of weeks and it would look like she still had hair. Later she had her hair cut shorter although she also used a wig sometimes.

But if you can rock a shaved head then go for it.

squaksquak · 17/12/2018 23:36

Do it!

And best of luck with your treatment Flowers

MrsTerryPratcett · 17/12/2018 23:37

I used to have a Salt n Pepa haircut. It was awesome.

DeadButDelicious · 17/12/2018 23:41

My mum was in a similar situation when I was little and she shaved her whole head in preparation for possible surgery. It gave her a feeling of control and it looked awesome. I remember it quite clearly despite being very young.

I don't think you would be unreasonable at all. Your hair would grow back evenly and if it helps you feel better at what must be a scary time then that's good too.

Good luck to you. Thanks

Nothing wrong with a shaved head OP, but heres an alternative

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 17/12/2018 23:43

Thinking about the inbetweeny stage where your shaved quarter doesn't match... sounds like it might take a very long time to get past, so you'd possibly end up shaving it anyway? So probably shave the lot.

It's a tough decision though and I know I'd find it incredibly hard unless I could own it. I once sat next to a lady at the hairdressers who was having her whole head shaved in preparation for radio therapy for a brain tumour. She was calm and cool as a cucumber throughout- I was in awe of how confident and in control she came across, but the stylist was in tears once the customer left, although she'd also been very supportive and sensitive throughout.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 17/12/2018 23:45

If you have the headshape for it, go for it.
I have to admit, I fantasize about doing it sometimes, some women do it and it can look very regal.
But more importantly, best wishes for your surgery Flowers

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 17/12/2018 23:49

Oops lost last part of message and image
had some lovely pics of ladies with short back and sides with all the curls up top basically.

Good luck with the surgeru OP, wishing you a speedy recovery. Flowers

Toddlerteaplease · 17/12/2018 23:58

I definitely would. I think really short Afro hair looks great on women.
