What should i give my cleaner for Christmas?

Just wondering what is the norm here. My cleaner has been with me for a year, comes once a week and i pay her £30 for 3 hours. She is reliable and hardworking and I want to give her something this week for Christmas but should i get her a gift (and if so what) or else just give her the cash instead (how much is reasonable?) as that would probably be more useful to her at thsi time of the year. TIA

@ShatnersWig I don’t think anyone said the cleaners weren’t worth it??

Voucher for local pharmacy /boots/Debenhams

Bottle of nice alcohol, some extra cash.

Some curious comments on here- if you employ the cleaner then paid holiday is an entitlement at an appropriate pro rata level.

Ontheboardwalk · 17/12/2018 22:31

£30 bottle of wine, what if they don’t like what you’ve got them. I’d rather have the cash

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/12/2018 22:35

CLeaners are self employed Doris.

On a tangent, is it ok to differentiate between the cleaners?

I have a fab woman who has come to me every week for seven years. In the summer my house got bigger so the hours increased to 4 so now she has someone with her and they do 2 hours. New one is crap and you can clearly see who does what room, standards are massively different. I am giving them both a Jo Malone soap and then want to give cleaner 1 £50 and cleaner 2 £20. I am also giving them two weeks notice after Christmas so don’t have to live with any consequences. Acceptable?

We gave ours money (2 cleans) and a hamper from Fortnum

winsinbin · 17/12/2018 22:41

A weeks money in the form of an M&S gift card.

TrippingTheVelvet · 17/12/2018 22:44

Wtf is wrong with some people? Buy her a hoover then cut her hours... Seriously?!

Lilifer · 18/12/2018 00:44

thanks all for your replies, much appreciated. Im on a tight budget this xmas due to domestic issues so gonna go with £20 and a nice bottle of white wine.

@Looneytune253 Where did I say that? I didn't. I am asking a genuine question why there are some roles we seem to think are deserving of tips all year round (like hairdressers) or Christmas bonuses (like cleaners) and some that are not. One poster says they no longer tip bin men but I know some cleaners who earn more than bin men.

I just had a look online at bin men jobs. I can see some paying around £8 per hour, some paying £11 per hour, one in Glasgow city paying around £16k and one in another part of Scotland £23k.

Cleaner gets a weeks pay (£30) and a small gift - this year it’s a box of chocolates
Also get her a box of chocolates on her birthday
Binmen I give £10
Don’t tip postman as I gave him a gift one year and he looked utterly nonplussed
Hairdresser is a friend so I get her something wonderful

CampariSpritz · 18/12/2018 08:38

Nice box of Hotel Chocolat chocs & two weeks’ wages.
