To think this is a shitty way to treat creche staff

A colleague was talking about going for a nice lunch with friends and some early sales shopping after work on Christmas Eve (we finish up at 12). Someone said "Oh, does the crèche open for the full day? Ours is closed from lunch time" and she just replied that they close at 2 but she'll just pay the late fee because 'they can't throw the kids out on the street, can they"?

AIBU to think this is a really mean way to treat staff who will want to get home on Christmas Eve as soon as possible and not hanging around waiting for someone who is off work from 12 but just wants to enjoy herself? Apparently she's planning to get to the crèche 'by about 3.30."?

When my DC was in nursery they closed early Christmas Eve and kept reiterating the week before that ‘most children will be picked up way before closing, I’m just telling you so that little X doesn’t get sad being the only one left in the room etc etc...’

We and everyone normal got the hint and ensured they weren’t there anywhere near closing...

The only way she could possibly hope to get away with this without SS or the police getting involved would be if she called them shortly before 2, put on a panicked and distressed voice and lied that she was caught in a traffic accident or had been mugged or something like that.

Even then, there's a very good chance that she would be rumbled - and then the consequences would be far worse than they already would.

I really do hope she has realised what a terrible, selfish plan this was and doesn't go back on her decision not to do it. It's still appalling that it was only the thought of her getting into trouble that made her think again and not the predicament of the creche staff or her child(ren).

Is she the only employee in the whole country who isn't entitled to annual leave or regular scheduled days off work? Could she not have used one of those earlier in the month to do her shopping? It would have been much more pleasant and productive for her to go on a Thursday early in December rather than join the frenzied hordes on Christmas Eve, surely?

YANBU. What a selfish cow. Many of those creche workers will have their own kids at home waiting for them.

This is years ago, but my DCs nursery closed at 6 pm. At one point they had a 'run' of late, late pickups from more than one parent so they instituted a strict policy. It was $20.00 (US) for the first 10 minutes (or part thereof) late with fines increasing per occurrence, then $10.00 per 2 minutes after 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, Child Services was called. They did try to call the parents & emergency contacts first, but this was pre-cell phone era so a bit harder to contact people. It was in bold print in your contract and they sent home reminder notes every few months so there was no excuse.

I got off work at 4.30 and it was a short drive so pickup was never a problem for us. Even if I stopped off at the shops after work I was never later than 5ish. Some families really took the piss though but the policy reined them in.

I agree w/a PP, that if you know the nursery you should alert them. At least then they could put a reminder note up.

£5 for every 5 mins late. £90 fee just to shop and drink for an extra half hour. She sounds like a twat

I'm another one who would call the creche and let them know. Selfish wagon.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/12/2018 17:58

Fuckin horrible selfish bitch. Not only to the staff but to her little one.
.Imagine how scared he/she will be when all the other kids have gone home
Children aren't stupid. They're not little dolls who won't notice anything.
They get panicky and anxious just like adults do.
She must think the creche workers actually live in the nursery cupboard.Hmm

Sorry Dio

The mum was drunk but I didn't add that as it does sound like I'm making it up.
