To throw SIL's Christmas card straight in the bin?

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 17/12/2018 14:12

SIL puts glitter inside every card she sends. She's particularly fond of booby-trapping greetings cards with a mixture of fine and superfine glitter that seems to linger for ages. (I was still finding glitter all over PFB months after she sent a new baby card.) I'd be marginally less irritated -not really- if she used eco-glitter, but it's just so wasteful, unnecessary and annoying. I thought she might stop after she had DC herself, but if anything it seems to be worse. I've tried opening cards over the bin, but the glitter still explodes everywhere. WIBU to just throw her card straight in the bin without opening?

I vote for opening it at her house the next time you’re there.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 17/12/2018 14:42

Open it outside. My dad's cousin does things like this but also puts money/vouchers in sometimes. I've found if i open it outside then the mess stays there.

caringcarer · 17/12/2018 14:44

Very annoying, but just open it outside and give it a good shake before taking it home.

cjt110 · 17/12/2018 14:46

Get a full pot and empty it into a card for her and post.

Return to sender.
Bigger envelope with hers slightly open inside.
Post.

NonaGrey · 17/12/2018 14:49

You are being pretty miserable, it’s just a bit of fun!

It’s never fun dog it’s always annoying as hell.

OP have you actually asked her not to?

Fatted · 17/12/2018 14:49

YANBU.

I was making Xmas hats for school with my DC at the weekend. For some stupid reason I thought glitter was a good idea. I've hovered the entire house about 10 times since Saturday and I'm still finding glitter everywhere!!

Poppins2016 · 17/12/2018 14:52

@cuppeycakey, that's brilliant! The bride to be had no right to be annoyed (but perhaps it taught her a lesson...). Grin

My brother and I occasionally play 'glitter wars' with cards... I'm a fan of fine glitter, it's stealthy! Trick is to pick the right person to prank, though. We both love it but recognise that others may not...

NonaGrey · 17/12/2018 14:54

Venus oooo that is so tempting.

So evil though.

E20mom · 17/12/2018 14:57

YANBU. I opened a card like that just before going to a funeral. Turned up in black but covered in glitter. Not the look I'd been going for!

minisoksmakehardwork · 17/12/2018 15:02

@cuppycakey - good on the guest who did that. It's made me chuckle. I can just imagine the confusion and then anger of the bride.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/12/2018 15:05

You are being pretty miserable, it’s just a bit of fun

Indeed, it's hilarious when pointless sparkly shit kills marine life.

OftenHangry · 17/12/2018 15:06

She is nicking "Send you enemies glitter" business model 😂

Elphie54 · 17/12/2018 15:06

I would return the card unopened to her.

Fatbutt · 17/12/2018 15:08

i adore glitter... but not loose in a card - anyone who does this to me, I get revenge the next year, for some reason they dont seem to do it again!

Cant you get her one of those cards that explodes out of the envelope when you open it (and put in a special request for a ton of glitter to be added) - well worth the inflated cost for one year of delightful revenge!

borntobequiet · 17/12/2018 15:09

My MIL sent me, many years ago, one of the first Christmas cards that, when you opened it, played seasonal tunes. On Boxing Day the mechanism broke and wouldn't stop when closed. I ripped it up and stamped on it, but it went on playing. Finally I flung it in the metal dustbin from whence we could hear tinny renditions of Jingle Bells and The Holly and The Ivy all the way into the New Year. I only mention this because it was worse than glitter.

KeepingEveryoneSafe · 17/12/2018 15:09

My nephew gave me a card with loads of glitter in this year so I gave him a card with glitter & a spring loaded butterfly in it! He actually did a girly scream and got glitter in his hair when he threw the card in shock. The spring loaded butterfly will be making a return for Christmas but not in a card hehehe.

Obviously if you are both not pranking each other then it's just annoying and I would have to say something to get her to stop.

MulticolourMophead · 17/12/2018 15:10

Thing is, the actual amount of glitter stuck to a card bought from a shop is tiny, a pinch if that.

But when people put glitter in the cards, they put so much more than that, and it gets into places you never thought it possibly could...

grumiosmum · 17/12/2018 15:11

Glitter is actually really bad for the environment.

Send her a link to this article, OP: www.theguardian.com/business/2018/dec/14/waitrose-ban-glitter-own-brand-products-2020

Turquoise123 · 17/12/2018 15:14

I am sure everyone put cards from her in the bin right away

Eliza9917 · 17/12/2018 15:15

I'd have to empty a whole vial of super fine glitter into a card for her, and also do the same for individual cards for every member of her household. All in different colours.

ThanosSavedMe · 17/12/2018 15:18

Have you asked her not to op? If yes, she is being very unreasonable

I would open her card outside over a bin with a knife or letter opener so you can check there’s nothing important inside. Once revealed it is just glitter, I’d send it back to her. She loves the shit so much, she can have it.

Glitter. The herpes of the craft world.
