Do you think rest REALLY speeds up a Cold recovery?

I have a cold and have spent yesterdat and today resting. Sometimes I can clear a cold after one days rest but tbat could be coincidental. Due to go out to a ticketed Xmas pub quiz event tonight and wondering if it's a bad idea or if I should carry on as normal as I'm gonna feel rotten either way and the only reason I'm not up and about is in an attempt at a quick recovery!

Rest.
Plenty of fluids.
Let the snot out , do not sniff it back up.

Not for me, no. A bad cold will take a full two weeks to completely go, regardless of whether I work, rest or play Blush

showmethegin · 17/12/2018 14:07

I think rest helps but also YWBU to pass a cold to a load of people the week before Christmas!

Cold = virus. Different viruses will take different time spans to go away. Keep warm, well hydrated and rest.

Don’t go somewhere there will be lots of people as you’ll only spread it.

I don't think rest speeds up recovery - I think that overdoing things (ie very late nights, or going back to work much too soon) can delay recovery.

This.

Your body will know. If you are tired and want to lie down, do so. If you feel fine sitting up, do that.

The problem with going to the pub I see is that you are likely to infect other people.

Let me know when you find out! Day 6 of a nasty cold with a bad cough: I can't sleep yet am knackered.

I have cancelled going to the work Christmas party tomorrow, as I don't want to pass it on.

Sparklesocks · 17/12/2018 14:41

your body is doing all it can to fight the germs at the moment - sometimes the cold symptoms we have are actually effects of our body fighting it.
So you need more rest to counteract the extra work your body is doing. Not getting enough rest will mean you’re likely to take longer to recover.

Day 6, Wink! I'm on day 2, I hope I don't have another 4 days of this. I don't really feel able to do anything except rest. Even if I did drag myself to work I'd be a liability, I can barely concentrate to make a cuppa. I'm wondering whether I'll be up to the Xmas lunch in a couple of days, but I won't go and give it to everyone else. (Even though I got it from one of them in the first place...)

BellsAreRinging1 · 17/12/2018 15:06

I understand what people are saying about spreading the virus but I think colds are so rampant that even if I didn't go, there will be someone there spreading germs who doesn't even realise they have it yet. Same for kids at school, there is always a child poorly in any one class but school wants better attendance.

In my experience the worst is over more quickly with rest (and warmth and chicken soup). When I need to work or travel and can't rest sufficiently well, it tends to linger and I end up feeling worse for longer.

wink1970 · 17/12/2018 15:15

Sorry Pywife! I had a similar cold in January and was 3 weeks (and I'm normally healthy) so I think there's a bad strain this year. I'm mainlining chicken soup and echinacea, and feeling sorry for myself on the sofa. In a way it's quite liberating as I'm normally of the 'crack on with it' brigade!!
