Aibu? He starts it up and leaves it running then goes off and does something or other whilst it’s still running . 8 minutes it’s been running for now .
Massive booming exhaust as well pumping all kinds of crap into the atmosphere !
He’s an idiot!

but I’m not such a delicate flower that I can’t cope with sitting in a chilly car for 5 minutes.

So how are you seeing out of all your windows for these 5 minutes? Or are you one of the idiots that peers through a tiny clear patch in the windscreen.

I have my engine running whilst I scrape the car - by the time I've scraped all the windows the car is demisted inside & legal to drive.

CanadianJohn · 17/12/2018 13:14

Does he have a remote starter?

My wife starts her vehicle 15+ minutes before she leaves the house, using the remote starter. It's very irritating, and of course zero mpg.

ChesterGreySideboard · 17/12/2018 13:15

I wipe it with a cloth.

DishingOutDone · 17/12/2018 13:25

I think we've done this on MN this week - it must be a seasonal thing -:

My car was so frozen my DD couldn't even open the back passenger door. Should I just wipe it with a cloth? Xmas Hmm

paintinmyhairAgain · 17/12/2018 13:28

i'm being a bit thick when it comes to frozen wind screens and getting it all wrong but i use de icer on it [runs and hides before am told iabu to state the obvious ] Grin

DeepanKrispanEven · 17/12/2018 13:29

I do scrape it on the outside. And use a cloth if it’s just wet. I’m talking about when it’s steamed up and I literally can’t see out of it

So you wipe it on the inside and/or put on the demister.

Oh and in my old VW the windscreen used to ice inside. Try scraping that.

I used to have similar, scraping off the ice inside wasn't at all difficult.

DeepanKrispanEven · 17/12/2018 13:30

Pour hot water over the bit of the door that's sticking. Much quicker than leaving the engine running.

YetAnotherUser · 17/12/2018 13:30

I put a hot water bottle on the dashboard to get things moving in the right direction about 30 mins before I want to set off.

Then I turn the engine on while I'm scraping the ice off, by the time I've done all the windows it's usually clear enough to drive, and if it's not I empty the (now lukewarm) hot water bottle over the screen to warm it up and flash the mist off.

VanGoghsDog · 17/12/2018 13:36

I hate wiping the steamed up inside of the windows with a cloth, it always leaves a smear and if it's very damp it leave droplets that then leave marks as they dry. So, I do sit in the car after scraping or spraying the outside and until the misting has gone, it takes about five minutes.

I don't have time to do anything before leaving the house (such as boil a kettle, fill up a hot water bottle, go out and put hwb in car) as I leave the house as soon as I am dressed, nothing else to be doing in the house after I'm dressed other than pick up my bag and put my coat on. And I'm not going to be faffing about with the car in the ice with just my dressing gown on.

SumitosIsMyWall · 17/12/2018 13:39

There's a massive difference between legitimately running the engine to make the car safe to drive (demisting whilst you clear the windows on the outside) and running the engine because you're a thoughtless arse who thinks they're so important that they can just run their car unattended on a cold morning.

Wiping the interior with a cloth isn't actually quicker or better (unless you have magic cloths that never smear and long elegant arms that can reach without your boobs activating the car horn again)

I can guarentee that my car isn't running when stationary for longer than necessary. Absent car warmers are just dickheads waiting for their insurance to be nullified when someone deservedly TWOCs their car.

Sure.....and how can you tell the difference?

Maybe he popped back in to finish off feeding his disabled child while his partner has a shower? Who knows.

Obviously, he must be a thoughtless arse though. Obviously.

Mayrhofen · 17/12/2018 13:52

I worked with someone that used to do this, then one day he came out and the car was gone.

His insurance didn't pay out either. It did eventually turn up but was pretty scuffed and the keys were missing.

haloumi · 17/12/2018 13:54

SHOCK HORROR .

Start Car. Pour WARM water on it. Put the wipers on. Get in and Go .
Wait for screen to clear ... (minutes)

Get in and go ...

Anyone who scrapes nowadays is a dinosaur ... screens no longer crack when warm WARM water is applied....

cuppycakey · 17/12/2018 13:55

It is very anti social and selfish to do this. I used to live in a country where it was illegal to do this even on private land.

And yes, it invalidates your insurance.

My DBro did what PP suggested when a neighbour with a big van kept doing this. Turned it off and threw keys down the drain Xmas Grin

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 17/12/2018 14:00

Just checking back to see where the OP tells us about his disabled child and showering wife.

No, thought not

Have they stopped selling de-icer then

Cos I'm old enough to remember when you did use to have to run your engine in the mornings...then lo and behold they made something that means you don't.

OP yanbu.

SumitosIsMyWall · 17/12/2018 14:05

Sure.....and how can you tell the difference?

Because the entitled arse is inside feeding their non-existent disabled child staying warm whilst the person legitimately defrosting their car is doing so whilst clearing the other windows.

It's not difficult, even for the goady hard of thinking Hmm

Added to which there are no extenuating circumstances that insurance companies would accept for an unattended car with the engine running. They'd simply wish you the best of luck finding your car and probably void your insurance for not following the T&Cs.

SumitosIsMyWall · 17/12/2018 14:10

When I say clearing the windows, I don't necessarily mean scrape. I always make sure both side windows are clear before driving...as I don't have windscreen wipers on the side of my car and my automatic windows don't clear excess water so I always clear them with a squeegee before driving.

1st rule of driving, see and be seen. If you get that wrong you or sadly someone else as recently reported in the local news will be on the wrong side of mortality.

VanGoghsDog · 17/12/2018 14:18

How many minutes? Maybe....I dunno....five? So, about the same then? I do this sometimes but I have to either wait for the kettle to boil, or stand and wait for the boiler to fire and hot water to run through into the kitchen tap and fill a jug, take it out, pour on windscreen, go back in, leave jug/kettle, then lock up, get in car, start engine and sit for about 5 minutes waiting for the internal mist to clear.

Not that I leave my car, because I'm aware it would not be insured. But I do start the engine and scrape or apply deicer - oh, SHOCK, today I sprayed de-icer and STILL had to scrape. And then had to sit for three more minutes for the mist to clear, I know how long it was, I timed it, because I was worried about being late for my train. Funny how life just isn't as simple as some people try to make out.

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 17/12/2018 14:18

Does spraying the outside of your windscreen miraculously demist the inside now then?

And don't tell me to use a cloth, because looking through a smeared windscreen in the dark isn't something I'm going to do.

The only way to safely demist all windows it to get the car warm inside.

My lad can do that remotely - it's the only time he uses the batteries on his hybrid - as can a lot of cars now.

Mine isn't so modern, so I warm it up when I scrape & drive off when all the windows are clear.

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 17/12/2018 14:21

Oh sod off, so when you come back in the evening, or the next morning there's a sodding patch of ice there. I'm not scuttling around with jugs of water all fecking morning.

I'll continue to use the heaters that Ford saw fit to supply thanks.

It's what they're for.....

Exactly this.

ChesterGreySideboard · 17/12/2018 15:51

I saw a car running to warm up this morning. It was 7 above. Completely unnecessary.

Wonkydonkey44 · 17/12/2018 16:03

Nope no ice on the windscreen this was early afternoon and his wife wasn’t in and kids at school .
It’s a regular occurrence doesn’t matter if it’s 2am 7am or 2pm it’s always the same.
He starts the car sometimes if we are lucky he will stand outside it with the car door open foot in on the accelerator and rev the arse off it . Or he will leave it running before he goes to do his shift work and go back inside his house.
I just can’t get my head around it , I start my car and drive off end of I don’t piss about for 10 mins whilst it’s running 😁
