To ask you to fix my crazy excess burping nightmare?

I must do over a thousand burps a day and it's starting to really embarrass me. I sound like a retching pig and know it isn't normal but it's crept up on me I guess and I've been sidetracked by babies and life and work etc.

Has anyone had this? I don't have symptoms of GERD or stomach ulcers (no weight loss here!) - and while it's worse with rich foods, it happens anyway so I can't solve it by not eating spicy stuff or delicious cheese. I'm reasonably healthy, though I do have too much faty food I know. I am fairly active and not overweight though if that makes any difference.

I've googled and can't find anything like this, other than scary cancer things but I'm not unwell / losing weight / in pain. Ditto with gallstones. It's probably been happening since my second child was a young baby and he's now 2 1/2.

I feel like a GP will wonder what the hell I'm bothering them about - I don't even know what I'd say! Has anyone experienced this? Blush

Go to your GP sounds like acid build up, I had the same problem was prescribed omeprazole, that didn't help much so GP put me on Lansoprazole which has helped alot.

Yeah, yet! I ignored early symptoms and have ended up quite poorly and sick of my life.

Fluffyears · 16/12/2018 15:49

Sou de like reflux. I had similar symptoms and gp gave me omeprazole which helps a lot.

SleepWarrior · 16/12/2018 15:53

Get tested for h.pylori (it's a bacteria that infects the stomach). It is known to cause burping so worth eliminating. If you do have it it can be treated.

Nightfall1 · 16/12/2018 15:56

Sounds like a hernia

LakieLady · 16/12/2018 16:04

I have a hiatus hernia and it makes me burp like mad.

DP suggested I change my surname to Belcher. I soon told Mr Fartpants where to park that idea.

likeamother · 16/12/2018 16:05

Thank you all. Have been meaning to post for months and you've helped me loads more than several google searches!

I will go the GP then and if he does look at me blankly suggest these as potential options. Weirdly my toddler is on Lansoprazole for reflux. It is sometimes accompanied by heartburn, that's actually what finally prompted me to post today. I'll make a note of h.pylori too. I didn't think I had any hernia symptoms but not ruling anything out!

@gamerchick - I'm really sorry to read this and hope things improve. Thanks for the warning.

It could also be IBS. That's what I have and it's driving me crazy!

Shesaysso · 16/12/2018 16:10

Yep another vote for hiatal hernia.

EmeraldShamrock · 16/12/2018 16:20

I was just coming on the thread to suggest it could be a habit. I burp lots I don't eat unusual foods, I thought I had got into a habit, my sister would scold me for burping in public. One day I saw someone make a massive burp, it was disguisting it made me more conscious to hold it in.

Though after reading on seeing hiatal hernia? May I ask those who have one. About 2 years ago I heard a massive pop in my chest. The muscle pain was so bad I went to a&e with chest pains., they said it was muscle damage, anyways now if I lift my knee up to put on socks on, a muscle on my diaphragm pushes through like a babys fist and it is so painful. I have gentle push it back in, is this a hernia the GP said you can't see a Hiatal hernia.

flumpybear · 16/12/2018 16:29

See your GP it could be anything! Helicobacter pylori was my first thought too but it could be anything

rosie39forever · 16/12/2018 16:29

Another hiatus hernia here and yes main symptom for me is burping, sounds like you need an endoscopy to take a look.

silkpyjamasallday · 16/12/2018 16:37

I had this and it was nothing sinister thankfully. I burp uncontrollably for hours and hours when I eat apples or drink apple juice, as I apparently can't digest the fructose in them properly which causes excess gas and therefore burping. It's quite common and called 'fructose malabsorption' but the fruit that affects each person can vary obviously. Might be worth making a food diary to see what you're eating and when the burping is worst.

Widowspeak · 16/12/2018 21:36

I remember reading about someone with this problem. They were greatly helped with gripe water, the stuff you give to babies.
