AIBU to ask you if you can see signs of ptsd in Christopher Robin from the movie (Sorry, question not lighthearted)

I am talking about the Disney movie in which Christopher Robin is ex mil. My guy, who has got ptsd, said it explained the disease pretty well. He really did not want to discuss it further with me yesterday, only shrugged his shoulders, maybe today... but typically he does not like to discuss things like this.

I am sorry to be asking a ptsd question again, but I found this board to give good answers for that kind of question.
Next question: AIBU to ask all my parenting question at other boards and my ptsd questions often here?

I forgot to add: watching the movie I saw no sign of Christopher Robin having ptsd, he just hates his job. Dh does hate his job too and I am really wondering what I missed.

Like I said I will try to raise the topic again today but it’s difficult for dh to speak about his ptsd or his services because he starts stuttering or falls silent and I know more about the disease from reading from books are talking to others... and while he often talks to me about things like how unhappy he is with his job or his weight and so on, he cannot discuss ptsd with me very well.

By cannot I really mean cannot cause he tries but he starts stuttering and cannot get the words out. He typically does not stutter, only when discussing the topic.
Also he cannot verbalize his feelings very well and often only shrugs his shoulders.

I know this sounds weird.

A few things (from someone who has family members who are serving):

If you type "help for ex servicemen suffering from PTSD UK" in to Google about six or seven organisations come up who could help your dh. He may find it easier to speak to a fellow sufferer about this.

Christopher Robin's father in the film was definitely suffering from shell shock, or what is now called PTSD. Did you not see the numerous scenes where loud noises such as balloons popping triggered it? Walking in the woods seemed to help.

Finally, you are at liberty to post where you want about a variety of subjects on any site (not quite sure why this is in AIBU though).

No, this doesn't sound wierd, PTSD is more common than you might think and affects people in different ways.

Hope your dh can access the support he needs.

Actually I think I am talking about another movie in which Christopher Robins father is already dead and Christopher Robin served in WWII.
Thank you very much for your kind answer.

His father does not play a role in this movie.

I still cannot see Christopher Robin having ptsd but my dh sees it and he says this is excactly how he feels and why he is feeling suicidal sometimes (not right now, only sometimes but would never do it). He says no need to worry. He has talked to me about feeling suicidal in the past and I am happy he did choose to do it.

We are in Germany not the UK. DH is seeing a therapist and also talking to other people with ptsd. He tried medication in the past but has tapered it of recently because it gave him siteeffects he did not like.

Can you talk to him about exploring a change of meds with his Dr then? Sometimes it is a bit hit and miss to find a type that someone reacts to well. I went through my side effects with my GP and she told me that some of them would go eventually, but that others would stay, and switched me over to something that I found I can take with no side effects. (Not a film related response I know!)

SlightlyCoddled · 16/12/2018 07:04

Oh many apologies for getting the film wrong! (I hadn't realised there was another one!)

The therapy sounds like a good idea and I hope it helps your DH.

ConfusedWife1234 · 16/12/2018 07:50

@Slightly coddled No problem. There are so may movies about Milne/Christopher Robin/Pooh those days.

@Notaflyingmonkey. Unfortunately the side effects were pretty bad. He gained some weight and he is very unhappy with his weight. He has never been fat but became a bit pudgy after being discharged from the military, lost some weight and became pudgy again after a while and medication made it worse. This is very bad for him because he is obsessed with his weight, really like obsessed... like oh look, I am fat, unfit and worthless.
Meds also made our sex life less fun.

I can’t help the ptsd question I’m afraid but thought I might be able to help clarify the movie?!

Do you mean the latest film, where Christopher Robin is played by Ewan Macgregor? In the film he’s away at war when his daughter his born. He comes back to a job he hates but feels he has to work all the time and seems to take all the responsibility for the company’s survival and the jobs of all the other staff. He also is obsessed with his daughter’s academic success and discourages her from playing imaginative games. He wants to send her away to boarding school because he thinks that will be best for her.

I’ve no idea if those are symptoms of ptsd, but do they describe how your partner might be feeling? Does he take an abnormal amount of responsibility for others wellbeing?

ConfusedWife1234 · 16/12/2018 08:53

Yes. I think Christopher Robin is played by Ewan McGregor.
I actually do see the similarities between Christopher Robins life and my husband‘s. Both have been educated at boarding schools, both served in the military, both are fathers (we have four children though and hubby is not obsessed with their academic success), both work in a job they hate...
And yes, you are are right I did not notice before but you are spot on: Both have a similar character trait. Both take too much responsibility for others wellbeing... odd I missed that.

And yes I do think this feeling responsible for others well being hasty do with his ptsd and with his life story.

After rewatching the movie. I think maybe yes, he feels responsible for everything and he feels sad inside. Still not sure if CR has ptsd but now I noticed that he mentioned the war a few times. He kept an old compass from the war and now it is useless. Somebody else saw the movie.
