To think this isn't going to get sorted before Christmas?

My car was broken into earlier and a rucksack I use for work and uni taken. As my insurer allows me to file claims online and having had an issue with a previous insurer when needing to make a claim, I took this option. The bag is basically worthless and can be replaced easily before I'm back at lectures and I have another bag I can use for work.
However, I was meant to be spending part of Christmas Day with friends. They had previously offered to pay for a taxi when organizing it, but I refused as I have a car and don't drink.
I'm not going to hear from the insurers before Monday at the earliest regarding what the next steps are. Am I right to think that it's going to be a miracle if the smashed window is repaired this side of New Year?

Is it the windscreen? Otherwise could you seal it up and just drive? Or pay to get it replaced then claim the money back?

ReadMyLipss · 15/12/2018 22:03

My car was broken into a good few years ago now and the passenger side window was completely smashed. This happened in the early hours of the morning and I drove my car without the window and glass all over the passenger seat and floor and someone came out to my work and repaired it before lunchtime that same day.

I think you'll be fine!

user1474894224 · 15/12/2018 22:05

It should be fixed immediately (or at least the windscreen people will order the glass asap). Call them tomorrow.

itscalledwineflu · 15/12/2018 22:08

My car was broken into it worked out cheaper to pay auto glass excess usually around £70 not affect your no claims was sorted within a couple of days you can do it online .

ThisMustBeMyDream · 15/12/2018 22:08

Should be fixed in the next day or two. Their claim line is 24 hours. Ring them.

TokyoSushi · 15/12/2018 22:14

I would think that it will be, often unfortunately it's cheaper to pay autoglass yourself than go through insurance but I'm pretty sure they're a 7 day per week service.

CMOTDibbler · 15/12/2018 22:19

No, you should be fine. You just need them to authorise you to go to Autoglass then you can ring them and get in - its much quicker if you can go to their centre rather than them coming out to you as well

cestlavielife · 15/12/2018 22:23

Smashed window is very quick just call insurer they will authorise you to call autoglass repair by Monday

Purpleartichoke · 15/12/2018 22:26

You need to call. The window being broken risks further damage to the car. The insurer wants it fixed ASAP.

ButteryParsnips · 15/12/2018 22:27

Glass replacement is very quick and they'll come to you and do it. I think you have a good chance it will be done before Christmas.

Missingstreetlife · 15/12/2018 22:41

Ring autoglass, they have arrangement with most insurers to replace window and bill the insurance co. Or ring your insurance and ask them to get glass fixed asap. Should be done same day.

Jasmin82 · 15/12/2018 23:18

Thanks all. Phoned insurers. As I don't have the £75 excess, the glass company they use won't come out. The claims line (out of hours) weren't going to do anything to help. I asked if there was anyway they could just send someone out to help me stick the plastic bags down properly until I get paid as I'm finding it difficult as I need to use a stick to get around and balance myself. The first person said it would need to wait until Monday, then put me through to her manager when I pointed out that, by Monday the car battery would be drained from the alarm going off every 5 minutes due to the plastic bags not being stuck down properly. Her manager asked if I had breakdown and which company with and contacted them and has set up a breakdown technician to come out and help me stick the bags down so that I can use the car until I get paid and sort the window out.

Check that it isn't cheaper to call out a windscreen firm than to pay the excess and forfeit any No Claims.

redsummershoes · 15/12/2018 23:26

just get a quote from autoglass or similar companies,
we had a window smashed abroad (so no covered by insurance) and the autoglas equivalent there fixed it there and then for about 150£.
we had to get it fixed as ferries won't allow you on without proper window (plus travelling long distance with a rustling and drafty plastic cover isn't fun)

CasperGutman · 16/12/2018 07:16

If the OP doesn't have £75 to pay the excess, she won't be able to pay for a replacement window herself. It won't be less than £75.

To my mind this is one of the few times when it might be sensible to pay for something on a credit card if you have one available, or borrow the money from a parent or trusted friend. Being without a car could be very disruptive for many who rely on them for work.

wombatron · 16/12/2018 07:45

I mean this kindly, but you were always going to have to pay an excess for your claim and it was a bit naive to think otherwise.

The insurance company won't send anyone to help stick bags to your windscreen, and you shouldn't drive with a broken windscreen.

If you can't borrow it, get a credit card or overdraft extension I'd suggest asking the insurance if as a seasonal gesture of goodwill they can add the £75 to your monthly payment if you pay via DD, or if you can pay it in instalments over the next month? Or perhaps explain to your friends your predicament and ask if they would still be able to help out with taxi fare.

wombatron · 16/12/2018 07:46

Oops I realise they sent someone from breakdown. I retract that part of my post!

Jasmin82 · 16/12/2018 16:49

It was finally sorted at 4 AM by a local company sent by the breakdown company. The bags over the broken window are now securely strapped down.
CasperGutman I don't have a credit card, no parents or close family and none of my friends can spare that much so close to Christmas. Had it not been for he change in my health recently, I would have had the excess. Sadly, as my work and GP are unable to agree whether I'm fit to work (whole other confusing thread entirely), until they agree one way or the other, I'm not allowed to work, but also not getting any sick pay.
