To not buy a Christmas jumper, ever

We have a Christmas jumper day at work, but I would be over hot, and wouldn't wear it again, they cost more than I want to spend for a one off, I can decorate existing clothes

Fairisle jumpers are the way forward! Worn throughout the winter season - seasonal and Christmassy but still ok to wear for skiing in Feb!

tillytrotter1 · 15/12/2018 19:14

I would loathe it were I still at the chalk face, they used to have the occasional odd day, Book Character day, French day, I never got involved at all and received some terse comments! Christmas jumpers are 99.99% hideous, too much red for start, OH has a blueish one, Grumpy Old Man, that really suits him, both the jumper and sentiment.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/12/2018 19:24

YANBU. I don’t want to waste money on an item of clothing I don’t like and will only wear one day a year, if that. The environmental impact of tonnes of cheap jumpers being manufactured every year then chucked out afterwards is horrendous - I thought we were moving away from fast fashion?

Geraniumpink · 15/12/2018 19:25

I’m not a fan, and I work in a school. I just slightly decorate a red jumper instead. I like the fairisle idea though - very practical.
I also keep a spotty shirt for children in need and a green top for Macmillan cancer cake day.

JellyBears · 15/12/2018 19:28

Go to primark and buy the one with the grinch on it!

ForalltheSaints · 15/12/2018 19:34

I never buy one. I still donate to charity that it is being collected for.

JellyBears I never buy from Primark- I want clothes that last, and not made in sweat shops.

GoddamnCars · 15/12/2018 19:36

Yes to fairisle - just not tacky and horrible!

HestiaParthenos · 15/12/2018 19:40

I'm not British and am completely puzzled by the tradition of Christmas jumpers. Since when does it exist, and who started it?

When I read Harry Potter, I thought Mrs. Weasley knitting jumpers for her family as Christmas presents was a family tradition ... not that everyone in the country wears Christmas themed jumpers. Confused

YANBU.

KittensAndChristmasCake · 15/12/2018 19:40

Picked the kids up from their dad’s and they were all wearing them - made them take them off before they entered my house. Awful.

Really? You really made them take them off before letting them in your house? 😮

Greeper · 15/12/2018 19:44

Wot Daffodil said. The First World consumerist fast fashion waste thing just kills the joy for me. I am not in the slightest bit scroogey and I love baking and singing and seeing friends and family and stuff but I do think we can feel Christmass without buying YetMoreTat. The thought of all the empty advent calendars, chucked packing, worn once outfits, broken plastic baubles, used once tinsel just makes me feel a bit sick and as though we greedy brainless humans deserve everything we get as this planet gradually grinds to a halt la David Attenbourough etc.
Although I would probably buy second hand ones from the charity shop if the kids were really keen. But they are not yet.

Cocobana · 15/12/2018 19:45

@GaryBaldbiscuit have you seen the Christmas t shirts instead? Maybe this would allow you to participate without getting overheated. I don’t agree with the poster that says that they’re all ugly as they’re really not, there are some gorgeous ones. I have a few really nice ones and wear them year after year and they’re lovely. I had to stop myself buying a nother one this year, i may be a little bit of a Christmas jumper addict...Xmas Shock

llangennith · 15/12/2018 19:45

I'm way too fat to even consider wearing a Xmas jumper, and never wear jumpers anyway as I get too hot. When I have to wear something like that I pin some tacky tinsel to whatever I'm wearing.

Cocobana · 15/12/2018 19:47

My fairisle one infact is subtle enough I can wear it all winter, plenty of use out of it. My others have beautiful designs and subtle and not tacky. There are some nice one out there and if you wear them year after year they aren’t a waste of money either.

Cocobana · 15/12/2018 19:47

It's made up. When I was young (70/80s) men were often seen on Christmas Day wearing horrible jumpers, usually with hideous geometric designs, clearly through obligation as they'd been given them as presents. And they'd be asked, "I see you're wearing your Christmas jumper Grin".

tillytrotter1 · 15/12/2018 19:50

the tradition of Christmas jumpers

The current fad seems relatively new, I don't recall our children having them, '80s. The Save The Children Day seems to have popularised them more recently.

TroysMammy · 15/12/2018 19:53

I'd never buy or wear a Christmas jumper. On the other hand I do like my Bah Humbug! hat.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/12/2018 19:54

I’ve had mine 6 years, £8 from Asda. Wear it 4 or 5 times in December, love it.

Sidelook · 15/12/2018 19:59

Yanbu, CJ’s are unescessary and cringe!
