Anybody rented a van from enterprise?

MsHopey · 15/12/2018 16:20

Just posting for traffic.
Moving house in a few weeks and we don't have car a big enough to manage it this time.
I was looking a renting a large van from enterprise for £22.50 a day, it's also a £200 refundable deposit.
I can't find much online and I was wondering what peoples experience is with them?
It took a lot of reading to find the deposit price, while reasonable is a pain and I'm just hoping there are no more surprises.

Fine if there's no issue but read the reviews here if you have an accident even if it wasn't your fault. uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.enterprise.co.uk

The cretins tried to overcharge me twice for an accident I didn't cause. Fortunately my bank blocked them. I was travelling at the time with work both times and ended up cashless

Never ever again will I use them

Is Zipcar an option? They are fab and much more cost effective

Pinknecklace · 15/12/2018 16:29

BTW this company is fantastic for car hire insurance. Fast and professional www.carhireexcess.co.uk

boringlyboring · 15/12/2018 16:35

I used them for a massive tip run, had it for 2 days and I had no issues. The only ‘suprise’ I had was that only the driver could pay for it with their own card, which wasn’t me (never hired a van before so I don’t know if that’s typical) relative had his card with him so it wasn’t a problem, but could have been faffy if he hadn’t.

But they were fine overall.

easyandy101 · 15/12/2018 16:39

Dunno where you're based but I always use h&h for vans/trucks, never had any issues

They are north London based though

easyandy101 · 15/12/2018 16:42

Hired only to the person that paid is pretty normal, then you pay an extra charge per extra driver

H&H have normally chucked in the extra driver for free though, which is another reason we use them

tillytrotter1 · 15/12/2018 16:44

We used them in Edinburgh, no problem but beware that rates rocket closer to your date, ours went from about £25 to over £40 in one day.

Penninepain · 15/12/2018 16:45

We used them twice when moving dcs from flat to flat.
No problems at all. In fact, the second time we hired a van we got a small scrape along the side from overhanging branches. When we took it back they said it was no problem, it would polish out and they only really cared about dings larger than a fag packet (!)

Have to say, it was not the cleanest van (inside) that i have ever seen, but that actually helped us feel more relaxed about it all iyswim.

Bonkersblond · 15/12/2018 16:47

Had a car for 2 weeks through insurance, no issues, take photos of any bumps before you drive off, although I notice a cracked reg plate few days after I had car, not sure if there when I took the car or someone had knocked it when in my possession, anyway it never got mentioned when I took car back. Don't they do a deal where you pay £60 per year and you can have access to a car / van whenever you need and just pay per mile on it, great if you need access to van every now and then for a few hours, I did get the hard sale on this but haven't taken it up as have a van.

Hezz · 15/12/2018 16:53

Don't do it!

They tried to con us out of nearly £200 quid and the manager kept hanging up on us and refusing to speak to discuss it.

It varies from branch to branch as they are franchises but that one was dodgy as fuck.

MsHopey · 15/12/2018 16:56

The trust pilot reviews have left me scared.
63% super negative reviews.
My main concern is them trying to take money I don't really have by "new" faults. It's just a lot to risk but man and vans round here want £50 a trip and that just seems so high when it's £22.50 a day for the enterprise van.
Can't afford for them to try scamming us at all though.

Which branch is it?

My experience varies but my local branch have vans that are generally in such an awful state that they really don't care if you mark them.

wowfudge · 15/12/2018 17:26

Enterprise are really good. They're only interested in pursuing damage which breaks the paint and they are a good company. We've rented vans and cars from them and they are always fine.

MsHopey · 15/12/2018 17:27

The Google reviews for my specific me and is 4.6/5 stars. So not sure if I should believe that more than trustpilot as it does seem to depend on branch.

We've never had an issue. Easy, cheap and fast to refund the deposit back.

anniehm · 15/12/2018 17:32

Yes twice, no problems. Do walk around and check for any damage before you leave the yard, do take a photo of the cleanliness of the back too - but in our experience car rental (or van) aren't out to overcharge and trick you, you do hear of cases but that's against a backdrop of hundreds of thousands of incident free rentals! Local places can be better for vans and minibuses price wise so shop around

anniehm · 15/12/2018 17:35

Or and with trust pilot, and other review sites for that matters, only people with complaints bother posting (look at number of reviews against total in the U.K. for the year!) they are franchises so it's worth trying to find reviews for your nearest branch specifically

Aaaahfuck · 15/12/2018 17:45

I've rented plenty of vans over the years. A few from enterprise. I find van rental more reasonable than car rental. As in not trying to rip you off. Just give the van a good check over first.

fresh · 15/12/2018 17:48

Yes, recently. Absolutely fine. I paid for the excess damage thingy as I hadn't driven a van for years but didn't need it. As a pp said, they only care about damage larger than about 6" square I think.

Ladychuck · 15/12/2018 18:05

Used to work for them (branch manager) compared to other companies their fleet tends to be newer/well looked after. I hated working there (80+ hour weeks, no breaks, chronically understaffed) but would recommend them to people looking to rent.

Damage is only charged over a certain size, usually dent bigger than golf ball scratch bigger than 6inches.

You’re liable for tyre/windscreen damage, used to be £5 a day to cover that which I’d always recommend, it comes with insurance and damage waiver with an excess, in my day that used to be £1000, and you could pay £15/day to reduce it to £250. If it’s just for the day i’d take the cover, you can buy annual hire care excess policies online for cheap, but if you don’t rent cars very often then I wouldn’t bother.

Oh and the whole paying on the drivers card...that’s for risk purposes. If you’re gonna steak a rental car you’re not gonna use your own card...

Happy to answer any questions Smile

DexyMidnight · 15/12/2018 18:54

I love enterprise - they're the only hire co (van or car) I've ever used that have walked round the van with me (as standard, without prompting) and checked it with me. Every other fucker has handed me a form allegedly with any damage pre-noted and every single time i find scratches (or worse) mysteriously absent.

Enterprise also have a damage checker tool (explained in full at check-out of vehicle) - basically a plastic donut and if the damage is bigger than it and has briken the paint it counts as damaged. So you absolutely understand what will count as damage and what won't. All very fair and transparent.

No issues whatsoever either time, much cheaper than hertz, and i didn't even take out their insurance

Mag1cMarket · 15/12/2018 19:12

Rented van needed loads of ID, driving license, passport, bills in name, credit card, deposit.

HelenaDove · 15/12/2018 19:21

LadyChuck Sounds very similar to 1car1 who went bust several years back.

Cadburyssurpriseegg · 15/12/2018 19:23

Rented from them last month on line. No issues at all.

Hezz · 16/12/2018 19:40

They also refused to let us buy insurance for the excess which was £1500, other branches are £750 so no idea why theirs is so high.

I've used another local branch who were ok but honestly have told everyone I know not to use them after our experience. The scam wasn't to do with the deposit or damage.

The manager should be ashamed but sadly reading reviews doesn't give a fuck

MsHopey · 17/12/2018 06:57

We've looked at other local hire places and can't afford the deposit (£750 for thrifty van hire) or they won't rent because of our age (26).
We also don't have credit cards and some places specificy it has to be paid by credit card.
It seems the options available are enterprise or move everything with our 2006 Nissan Micra 😂
