To delay my period for Christmas?

ernjas · 15/12/2018 14:29

I have horribly heavy periods. It's looking like I could be on my period for Christmas but my cycles are so irregular that I can't be sure but I'm due on today and there's no sign.

Would it be unreasonable to get the medication that delays them for the Christmas period? With how heavy my periods are I think it'd put a dampener on Christmas as I'm always so uncomfortable.

I bought the medicine from Superdrug, it was expensive. I suffered really bad period like cramps and was a wreck emotionally, it took months for my cycle to get back to normal. My periods aren’t even that bad, I just took it so I could swim on holiday as I can’t use tampons. I wouldn’t reccomend it.

Thanks for everyone's opinions. A bit undecided right now, I'm just going to wait a couple more days to see if it naturally comes on before I decide to take anything!

I wouldn't, I done this last year as I had very heavy periods and on the 27th they came back a lot worse. I had to change my pad every 30 minutes and I threw out a lot of bedding that week.

If there’s any chance you’ll want it you need to make a GP appointment ASAP and get the prescription.

In a few days time there’ll be no appointments left and you won’t be able to get it.

rebelrosie12 · 16/12/2018 12:12

I wouldn't recommend it, took it recently and once I stopped I had very severe depression symptoms. Not nice at all.

FrowningFlamingo · 16/12/2018 12:15

If you do decide then check with your GP receptionist before you book as not all surgeries will issue the medication any more, some CCGs won't fund it. You can buy through the Superdrug website (and other large pharmacies) if not, which is essentially an online consult with a private GP who authorises a prescription - though it's based on a tick box form to check it's suitable for you, you don't actually talk to them.

I use norethisterone every summer holiday as my periods are heavy. Usually there are some tablets left over to delay it on one other important occasion in the year. I don't get any side effects, luckily.

You're meant to take it 3 days before you're due but I've taken it on the day I've started before and it worked, although I did get light spotting that time.

SoupDragon · 16/12/2018 15:45

Mine prescribes it over the phone without an appointment - presumably there is nothing in my medical history to suggest there is a problem with this and I've had it before (with an appointment originally)

UpOnDown · 17/12/2018 21:57

Mine's prescribed medroxyprogesterone, not sure how that's different?

Shannaratiger · 17/12/2018 22:01

Why don't you get the contraceptive injection and have no periods at all. Such an amazing break from 3 days of stomach cramps!

anniehm · 17/12/2018 22:10

I took that drug once, never again made me really emotional and angry. I am due on Christmas Day and the first two days are really heavy for me, hopefully I'll be late (seriously irregular these days, thanks aging process!)

Dramallama16 · 17/12/2018 22:49

I know this won’t help you for Christmas, but you should think about getting the mirena fitted. I had awful heavy periods for years, and I hardly even notice them now after having mirena put in. I wish I’d have done it sooner. It’s been life changing.

OldGreyBoots · 18/12/2018 02:10

Shannaratiger for what it's worth, I wanted a contraceptive that could make my periods bearable. Injection stopped it for a few months, then I bled for three months non stop which doctors said was normal and did nothing about. The following 12 weeks nothing, and now back to constant bleeding...
Didn't mean to rant but it's been on my mind a lot lately! According to my GP about 30% of women experience continuous bleeding on Depo Provera, just wanted to offer a different point of view.

Pulipatchouli · 18/12/2018 02:37

Mirena coil. Changed my life after years of suffering.

OrangeJellySpread · 18/12/2018 05:15

Not sure if its a coincidence but last month I drank a lot of watermelon juice, a couple of glasses a day, and my period was so late. I googled and turns out it does have that effect.

Shannaratiger · 18/12/2018 19:44

Thanks OldGreyBoots I'd never heard this.

PookieDo · 18/12/2018 19:48

Not exactly helpful but I had an ablation that didn’t work and have been trying tranexamic acid and that didn’t work either. Got the mirena in again and working well. I have never tried that medication but DD said it made the next period really bad

I don’t buy sanitary products they are useless for my periods and make me very sore, I wear Tena soft pads. Helps with containing leaks tok
