And I really want to go and help the animals but I know they wouldn't let me anyway!
People are important too but the poor animals must be so so stressed!
AIBU to want them to escape :(

The orangutans are always carrying their blankets around with them (I think they are potato sacks?). They do at Twycross Zoo too. Not sure what the meaning is behind it. But it's rather cute! I have some brilliant pics of them.

brizzledrizzle · 15/12/2018 15:22

@Coppermine could you share one please?

Coppermine · 15/12/2018 15:22

JenFromTheGlen see my post two above yours. I'm curious to know what you think should have happened to those sun bears.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/12/2018 15:23

My dd is of the same mind, Jen.

RedForShort · 15/12/2018 15:24

Reported (via twitter) all animals safe

Coppermine · 15/12/2018 15:24

These are Twycross Zoo as my
Chester Zoo pics are on my laptop. But they were pretty similar in both zoos!

Chester zoo is on fire
Coppermine · 15/12/2018 15:30

I'm a bit worried they may have lost some animals. They have only confirmed the mammals are ok.

ClosdesMouches · 15/12/2018 15:30

Well unfortunately that statement doesn't say all of the animals are safe. Has the zoo tweeted that they are?

ClosdesMouches · 15/12/2018 15:31

x post Coppermine same concerns here.

KimberWozRobbed · 15/12/2018 15:31

I doubt there is an orangutan photo. I've been evacuated from Chester Zoo before (about 20 years ago ) and there was no time to take photos.

Lockheart · 15/12/2018 15:35

They have only accounted for all the mammals. There will be so many smaller birds, reptiles, insects etc that will be much harder to account for and which are sadly more likely to have been hurt or killed in the fire.

Coppermine · 15/12/2018 15:38

It was Cheshire Fire and Rescue who first said all animals were accounted for. They tweeted before the Zoo made the statement, and they have now deleted that earlier tweet. I think they were too premature (or misunderstood the information the Zoo gave them).

Hopefully it's just a case it takes some time to check the smaller species are all ok but I don't like how the fire rescue statement has backtracked.

BarbarianMum · 15/12/2018 15:54

Ideally the sunbear cubs would have been kept in a rehabilitation unit in their native country and ultimately returned to the wild. Unfortunately, logging and palm oil means there's less and less wild for them to be returned to.

brizzledrizzle · 15/12/2018 15:55

I'd be surprised if there were a photo but I've seen it mentioned that there was one. The main thing is that all the animals are out, not just the mammals.

tillytrotter1 · 15/12/2018 16:26

I would imagine that the zoo would have to have an emergency plan as would all places open to the public. It does seem that the animals are all safe though.

Mormont · 15/12/2018 16:37

No, the mammals are all safe but not all of the animals.

italiancortado · 15/12/2018 16:50

Poor animals being hemmed up in an environment they don't need to be in. Awful places that should.have been abolished years ago.

Agreed:

Whilst things like poaching, trophy hunting etc. still happen zoos are a necessary 'evil' in the world. Chester is by far one of the better ones.

How are zoos necessary because of poaching? What an odd thing to say.

SuburbanCrofter · 15/12/2018 16:54

I don't think anyone said there was a photo, just a PP saying that someone had seen them being led to safety, carrying blankets. I imagine they were something similar to what Coppermine saw.

Mormont · 15/12/2018 17:19

Yes, the 'blankets' are potato sacks. The orangutans like to play with them just like in a past poster's photos.

IShitChristmasGlitter · 15/12/2018 17:32

The new photos of the fire are awful. Sad

steff13 · 15/12/2018 17:33

Yes, the 'blankets' are potato sacks

Disappointing. They probably weren't wearing footie pajamas like they were in my imagination, either.

AuroraFloyd · 15/12/2018 17:45

Poaching can lead to the threat of extinction, good zoos help to protect threatened species from extinction through conservation, education and breeding programmes.

Because of poaching there are fewer elephants, tigers and pangolin, ivory, 'medicine' and apparently pangolin are a delicacy, just a few examples of creatures we are losing. Then there are the big brave hunters who plaster their photos online with a foot on the creatures they kill for fun (Cecil the lion who was supposed to be safe). And don't forget the demolition of the rain forests and the animals killed in it because they are in the way or protecting their home and family.

Without zoos these creatures will vanish because of selfishness and greed.
