To ask you to tell me what to buy in the US

We are off in a week's time on a family holiday to the US. It is years since I was last there and I just wondered what is worth buying and bringing back that is much more expensive and hard to find over here? I am unreasonably excited about a trip to Walgreens but wonder if there is anything else I should consider. Thank you all!

You do get masses of discounts with the CVS card but I’d rather they just lowered prices! Coupons, sales and discounts seem much more part of shopping in the US than the U.K. it’s all just a big faff, it seems so old fashioned. Then there is the Amazon Prime “discount” in Wholefoods which almost never gives a discount on anything (not that it’s easy to tell because they hate giving you a receipt).

You can buy melatonin in the UK from this website Biovia

Stupomax · 18/12/2018 15:10

OlennasWimple - yep, exactly. I'll bet you can buy those $25.99 Tylenol for $5 if you use enough coupons. Personally I'd rather just go to Walmart or Target, and get them there without the faff.

Where do people go to get cheap pharmacy goods? CVS and Walmart are both expensive for over the counter stuff compared to U.K. supermarkets.

I'm in Boston area too. I buy in RiteAid - have a rite aid loyalty card and it gets me loads off every time I use it. Costco would also be cheap.

chemenger and pallisers - I've never quite understood why stores prefer coupons to just lowering prices - I guess most people don't faff around and pay full price / just the lower price for having a loyalty card. I don't live in the US any more, but when I did, I was disappointed if my CVS receipt showed anything less than a 50% saving on the retail price.

My best ever CVS shopping trip - that impressed even the cashier, who must see plenty of this sort of crazy - saw me leave the store with $20 retail price stuff having paid $1 for it and with a voucher for $5 for my next purchase Grin DH refused to let me frame that receipt

pallisers · 18/12/2018 15:25

yes I never get the coupon thing but the loyalty card does make sense. I buy all my cleaning stuff/paper goods/toiletries in rite aid because it saves me money so they probably get their money back. If I spend 60 dollars, I'd expect to get at least 20 dollars off.

I actually buy my pharmacy stuff in the UK and bring it back to the USA the only exceptions being melatonin and Advil pm.

Don't buy their chocolate. Seriously, it's one of the reasons why ISIS hate them.

macarenaferreiro · 18/12/2018 15:53

Wal-Dryl cream - it's a combined antihistamine and topical anaesthetic which is the best thing ever for insect bites.

We also like Old Navy, Gap and Uniqlo if they have outlets nearby.

Chapstick in lots of flavours you can't get here - like grapefruit.

theveryhighlife · 18/12/2018 15:56

Sephora, Bath and Body works (sign up to their emails first), Levi's jeans. Macy's always has a sale on, Victoria's Secret, Cheesecake Factory ;) , there are loads.
I got back from Miami yesterday....

Also my top shopping tip if you're in Orlando and doing the parks - Walmart is great for t-shirts at 25% of what a similar thing would cost in the parks. Also in the Premium Outlets place on International Drive there is a Disney clearance store with loads of stuff very cheaply. Everything from clothing to mugs to toys. We got lots in there last time we went.
