To think getting rid of the Severn Bridge tolls is a bad idea?

Those bridges need constant maintenance.
100 people are losing their jobs as toll collectors.
£5.60 isn’t that much a few times a year, if you commute you can get a discount with a tag.
I know the tolls went to a French company for years but now they are UK Goverment owned they could be an important source of revenue which no doubt will get taxed elsewhere.

I’ve paid around £200 crossing the bridge this year, more than some but less than others but I don’t think this is the greatest move.

I agree with you OP but I think the bank card/contactless option has been the death knell to the jobs.

Maintenance of the bridge though, who is going to pay for that? I'm also wondering how the traffic flow will be affected now that there will be no natural sequencing as people pay/pass through. Chicanes may be the answer? I can't find any information about the plans.

I use the bridge at least twice a week, sometimes every day.

The tolls will have gone to pay back the loans that were given to build the bridge in the first place (oh, and make money for whichever private company was operating it).

@Gwenhwyfar, it’s not the paying the tolls , it’s the queuing to pay the toll , the hideoeous race as the traffic lanes go down to 3 ( or is it 2 ) then the nose to tail queue , again as far as the Brynglas tunnels
( let’s just gloss over the 50 mile speed limit in 2 lanes as you go past the beauty of Port Talbot )

You could say this about any toll road thigh, what makes this one more unique?

The race to get out of the tolls is ace!
Ah well, maybe I am being U, but I don’t see why this toll and not others.
