To want to be able to book a basic haircut without all the faffing and blowdrying?

All salons I've been to seem to include at least half an hour of blow drying and styling. While I do think it's fun sometimes to have immaculately blow dried hair (say if I'm going for drinks or dinner, I'd appreciate the end result then) I don't enjoy the fussing and pulling and hauling at my head - I have sensory issues and fibromyalgia so sometimes it's really uncomfortable. I wish it was possible to just book a wash, trim and basic blow dry in order to get in and out as quickly as possible.

Would a barber do a no frills trim on my long hair?

I've not seen a wet cut on any salon menu before? And I do always stop them using hair straighteners or tongs. But they seem reluctant to let you out unless you have perfect waves or silky straight perfectly done hair

Depending on the type of cut, it's not always possible to check the balance and how the hair lays until it is dried and styled. That's why most places prefer to properly finish your hair. Especially if you have layers. It's impossible to see if layers are properly blended on wet or unstyled hair.

A one length cut is the only cut I would be happy to leave wet and even then I prefer to check them dry to see if any bits need finishing off or tidying up.

But yes, wet cuts and dry cuts are a thing. Just ask for them. The stylist will know whether your style needs a wet or dry cut.

Now I just need to find a way to stop them doing that fucking horrible head massage shite when they wash my hair angry

Its really simple. You open your actual mouth as you sit down at the sink, and use your actual words to say "please don't worry about the head massage - i dont really care for it". Then sit back and have a massage-free wash.

Its my favourite bit of getting my hair cut, but each to his or her own.

Get a mobile hairdresser and ask for a wetcut. You can dry it yourself (or not) at home.

Grace212 · 14/12/2018 15:43

you need to find a cheap place that's used to doing this

I know it can be hard, for about 2 years in my area, there wasn't one. It's not even posh round here. I tried asking for a dry or wet cut in the regular hairdresser and they said "we will charge you the same".

if you are in or near London, there's one in Islington, can't recall the name of it. usually it's the sort of place you don't make an appointment.

I just had my hair cut in Germany at one of those Supercuts-type places. Really only needed a trim and, like the OP I hate having all the blow-dry, faffing nonsense. I was a bit nervous as I had inadvertently managed to stumble across possibly the only young person in the city who spoke not a word of English (my German is pretty basic and my hairdressing vocabulary is almost non-existent). She actually ended up doing exactly what I wanted but then said something that I didn't really understand. It turned out that she was asking me to go to the bank of dryers and dry my own hair - result! I thought maybe this was just because it was a walk-in type salon, but my DD confirmed that this is pretty standard. Maybe consider a trip to Germany OP?

I didn’t go to a barber. Barbering and women’s hairstyling are two different skills. It isn’t a sexist thing, try just are.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 14/12/2018 16:12

*they just are

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 14/12/2018 16:13

Wouldn’t go to a barber.

FOR FUCK’S SAKE AUTOCORRECT

How long is your hair? If it’s long-ish (say down to your bra strap or longer) and all one length, it’s easy to trim it yourself.

Am watching this thread with interest as I've got the same problem OP. I badly need the ends of my hair trimming, just an inch or two,but I know if I go to any of the hairdressers local to me,they will start trying to pressure me into a drastic cut/change of style, then spend ages blow drying it (I NEVER blow dry my hair as it destroys the waves in it) . I know that long hair is often not considered flattering/fashionable on women of my age (55) but I can't bear having it too short.

Bagadverts · 14/12/2018 17:35

I’m like the OP. I like my salon and the colour I get, like the cut afterwards, but find it hard to stop them faffing afterwards. My hair is short so sometimes needs spraying to wet it for cut as it dries. Even though I ask in advance they still spend ages drying and want to put in spray.

I don’t like having my hair cut because I can’t wear my glasses so my eyes are constantly trying to focus (unfortunately I can’t wear contact lenses). Sometimes it looks great but I feel disappointed as due to disability I will never be able to reproduce it.

I know I should just say stop but I don’t even see see them beginning to use the dryer.

CMOTDibbler · 14/12/2018 17:35

I really don't like the whole hairdresser experience, and as I have long hair its not exactly a technical cut. So I mostly go to a 'every service £11' place with my hair clean and styled as I normally do and they just cut it. No appointment, no faffing, and I'm in and out quickly. And only £11
