Any alternative to botox

Deepgrooves · 14/12/2018 13:49

Posting here for traffic ( style and beauty is probably more appropriate)
So hope I am nbu to ask if anyone knows of any alternatives to Botox that actually work on frown lines?
I have really bad ones and want to finally get something done about them. They are very severe , it’s not about looking old , I am early 30’s and love my laughter lines etc but the frown lines make me look so cross and as though I am squinting.
I would love to just go for Botox as it seems the only effective solution but I suffer from health anxiety and I am terrified of the neurotoxin aspect of it.....
I have tried to fully inform myself and I have read up on the production etc but my biggest fear (irrational) is that in the dilution of the toxin a mistake could be made and then once injected could cause serious reactions or death. It says on the side effects information that a cosmetic dose could lead to respiratory failure. I wish I hadn’t read up on it and it seems a lot of people are blasé about the treatment.
I wish there was something less risky that actually worked. I tried frownies but really didn’t notice much difference even with consistent use, I have tried caci but it was just too expensive to keep up and as these lines are caused by muscles I just don’t see how that can work. Is there any other miracle treatment out there?
Btw I realize this is a very fickle issue but these lines have actually distorted my face the muscles are so strong.

Ah didn't want to read and run! It's horrible when you get deep frown lines before you're ready and before most of your friends the same age do. Unfortunately I don't think there is anything except Botox and it's probably not worth it with your anxiety. It takes a good week or so to kick in properly so you'd have a long time worrying. Thousands of people have it though with no ill effects, and it's used medically as well. It's sensible to use a doctor rather than beautician. But if you can't face it then try and feel at peace with your appearance, I know it's easier said than done though. Don't waste your money on gimmicky things like masks you sleep in and expensive creams, they will not work.

desertmum · 14/12/2018 19:31

I have deep frown lines (like tram lines going down my forehead) and had botox which partially worked. But to get rid of them completely fillers are needed.

tccat · 14/12/2018 20:38

Agree with dessertmum , botox worked a little bit on my frown lines, but it's filler that's needed, preferably both,
I had no problems at all with the botox

Birdsgottafly · 14/12/2018 20:41

Yes, it's filers that you need.

But if you are having irrational fears, then you'll find everything has possible side effects.

Thehop · 14/12/2018 20:45

I started Botox for mine very very young and it’s worked a treat. I honestly can’t think of anything that would work like Botox does, but you may need the lines filling now if they’re deep and then Botox to stop them getting worse.

If you really don’t want to have it then you’re going to have to make your peace with them.

CACI will work, it works the muscles but it’s more for lifting than frown lines.

sunglasses123 · 14/12/2018 20:46

It’s almost a question with no answer. Botox is the right thing. I look 10-15 years younger. I have light Asian skin so we don’t tend to show too many wrinkles and the Botox and fillers really help. If you are looking for something with zero risk, cheap as chips, no pain etc there really isn’t anything.

Would recommend Dr Mountford at the Cosmetic Skin Clinic near Slough or she has a branch in London. Subtle results.

EdWinchester · 14/12/2018 20:50

I think you're very young to need Botox, but having said that, I think it's the best thing ever.

I had it 2 weeks ago (not first time) and I can't stop admiring my face! As always happens when I have it, people have started asking what creams I use.

But an irrational fear, is just that. So injecting a toxin into your face is not for you!

bairnk · 14/12/2018 21:50

If you go for Botox make sure you find an experienced clinician. They should do a full assessment before the treatment and you should be able to ask any questions and have your fears allayed. I'm a dentist and carry out Botox treatments on my patients and if you explained your fears to me I would show you the Botox being reconstituted so you would know the correct amount of saline had been used.
Remember Botox has been used routinely for many years now in medicine and treats certain eye disorders, muscle spasms, urinary incontinence etc so it has a huge safety margin. It is only worth getting it if you are completely happy with everything about it though.

Self esteem.

Wish my DP would get botox. He was quite the young hunk when I met him. Now years of smoking like a chimney have turned his face in to a dry shrivelled grape.

Why don't these BOTOX companies target men? He can more than afford it.

babysharkah · 14/12/2018 22:17

Men do have Botox!

EdWinchester · 14/12/2018 22:20

My dentist does loads of men, including himself.

Really appreciate the replies. I honestly don’t think there is anything wrong with looking your age and have laughter lines and a line around my mouth which I like. Frown lines are a different category as I’ve had these since my twenties and all my family have them so prob genetic. As a pp said it is hard having them as they are lines you’d expect from someone a lot older.
I really do want to get them sorted as even my dcs ask me why I look cross all the time.
Thing is I read up on everything before I make a decision and there are some scary articles about Botox out there. Also the fact that it would only take a gram to wipe out a huge amount of people! I would just like to know more about the production and how they ensure it is safe before I get it injected into me. Like do they do final checks before it is sent to the various clinics. How is it prepared in a dentist or doctors surgery. I know I sound crazy but I have young kids and I know it’s not a nessesary procedure but I am so divided as in all honestly the lines have ruined my looks , I don’t enjoy putting on makeup anymore, I have a fringe which doesn’t suit me etc.
It sounds self absorbed but I think most people would prefer not to look angry and exhausted all the time and I know there is a simple solution.
I am the type of person who wants to know the exact process though and I can’t seem to get that information.

I think you’ve posted before about this and had some pretty good explanations on why what you fear could not happen.

prettywhiteguitar · 15/12/2018 09:12

Maybe treat your anxiety rather than obsess about Botox, you are distracting yourself from the real problem of your anxiety

weleasewoderick22 · 15/12/2018 09:19

By the way, beauticians are not allowed to administer Botox or filler. If you go ahead, please check the qualifications of the clinicians.

Mayhemmumma · 15/12/2018 09:24

I had one enormous frown line on my otherwise clear forehead. I went for botox (researched Dr who administered it) it hasn't gone entirely but it's smoother and was worth the money. Filler would probably fix it but I'm too scared of that, botox doesn't remain for long. Lots of money but really quite enjoyable! Go for it

AmIAWeed · 15/12/2018 09:32

I had terrible skin, looked years older than I am and went to see an asthetics nurse.
Her advice was to focus on facials, improve the overall appearance of my skin prior to any sort of fillers or Botox. After just 3 months the results were unbelievable - I looked and felt so much better. That was a year ago, all my small wrinkles have disappeared. Daily I use a cleanse foam wash, a magic cream which plumps my skin and a factor 30bb cream. I still have monthly facials, all range pending how my skin is, yesterday I had a peel and needling.
My center frown line however was still there, so I had Botox 2 weeks ago, I am genuinely impressed with the results, I thought I needed filler but the advice was to weaken the muscle with Botox prior to filler. If she just added filler then because I frown ALL THE TIME (seriously resting face is me frowning!) it would move and not set correctly.
Really though the facials alone took years off me and give me so much confidence. I'd recommend trying that first and build up your confidence

bionicnemonic · 15/12/2018 09:39

I won’t use Botox again
I use a combination of ‘facial smoothies’ which are similar to frownies but can be reused and are stronger. They make a pack just for forehead lines as well as smaller 11 lines
Nu-face uses micro current the same as caci but you can invest in a unit then do it yourself there are loads of great tutorials on YouTube.
www.currentbody.com/nuface
(A lot of you tubers use the mini which is the cheapest but if you want to use led as well you’d need the trinity unit and attachment)

This YouTuber uses a different stick type micro current
She also demonstrates a massage technique
The muscle that pulls the 11 together isn’t where the 11 is it runs horizontally above the start of each eyebrow and the micro current needs to run along it so horizontally too. Think of the skin being a tablecloth stuck on a ridge underneath, you have to smooth the ridge out.

Have you tried speaking with a Botox/fillers doctor? It may help quell those fears. The person I go to is a dentist: he's amazing and talked me through it all (even though I'd had it done previously with someone else) and there is no obligation to go ahead. He does consultations for those that are still unsure. If you know anyone who has it done, ask them - provided their look is what you are wanting to achieve. The man who does mine won't give you a frozen or permanently surprised look.
