Following. We just had our 2 spayed and chipped yesterday. Christmas eve will be their last check up with the vet. Christmas day outside. I'm so excited 😀

Wolfiefan · 15/12/2018 18:08

@gingercat02
You might want to rethink that. They need to be completely healed inside and out. Plus you want to let them out on a very quiet day where you’ve got time to potter around the garden with them. Added to the risk of fireworks at Christmas? I wouldn’t.

gingercat02 · 15/12/2018 18:27

@Wolfe I've had cats all my life, we still have a nearly 17 yo. I'm sure they'll be fine for 10 mins if the vet gives them the Ok.

ChoudeBruxelles · 15/12/2018 18:30

We’ve been letting out 6month old kitten out in the garden for the past couple of weeks while we’re about. He mostly stays on the patio chasing leaves

Wolfiefan · 15/12/2018 18:31

Your choice. But I wouldn’t. Not that day. Not if they can get out of the garden.

gingercat02 · 15/12/2018 18:34

Totally understand where you're coming from but I can't see them going anywhere and there have never been fireworks here on Christmas day. They'll have a quick look around a bit of a sniff and be straight back in! Even the old girl barely goes out at this time of the year and she loves being out

Wolfiefan · 15/12/2018 18:39

I may be prejudiced by the fact that our current two are tortie girls nicknamed “The Evils”. If they can scale it or get locked in it then they will. Grin

MrsDylanBlue · 15/12/2018 18:51

Yeah - mine did NOT like the rain today 😂😂

What's the cat flap that shows you their movement in and out? I have a v nervous young cat who is keen to go out but I'm too scared to let him yet

Katiet123 · 15/12/2018 20:05

The first time we let ours out the little treasure came sauntering back with a swollen cheek after catching a bee. He didn't stray very far and came back for food as he went out on an empty stomach (possibly why he caught the bee)

CrazyKitkatLady · 15/12/2018 20:21

@buckingfrolicks I have the sureflap microchip cat flap - you can get it on Amazon

Troels · 15/12/2018 20:40

Ours is 6.5 months and goes out all the time, he's manic, chases round the garden, goes up onto the garage roof and creates general mayhem.
With the bad weather he has moved himself inside and watches the rain. He knows how to get out through the cat flap, but won't come in through it.
Dh trained him to come when he whistles, by whistling and each time he came giving him bits of treats. So now he's a massive kitten.
I went out the first few times with him, he wasn't too brave and stayed near the open patio door.

Dollymixture22 · 16/12/2018 07:24

Mrs bucking - it’s the sureflap connect. It links to you phone and the cats microchip. I link d a videos above

Birdsgottafly · 16/12/2018 07:38

I've just remembered that I got mine coming back to me, when I called, in the house first, by giving them chicken/ham. So when they've got to the top of the fence and I can't reach them, they come in when called because they think they're getting a treat.

My older cat looks in distain and disgust when they run around like lap dogs.

woodwaj · 16/12/2018 20:46

This thread gave me some courage and I let my boys out for the first time today. It went well and they didn't leave the garden! One much braver than the other!

PooleySpooley · 16/12/2018 22:20

I need one of these catflaps 😂😂

buckingfrolicks · 16/12/2018 23:23

Thanks Dolly

Yabbers · 16/12/2018 23:29

This is weird. I was just reading the other thread asking why cats roam and dogs don’t and I wondered at what point kittens are let out and how owners deal with it.

And now I know!

gingercat02 · 26/12/2018 13:00

Well our babies had a look outside on Christmas Eve and went no further than the back doorstep. Yesterday no interest but this morning have had a little wander round the garden and are now crying at the cat flap to go out again. I think they're going to be outdoor cats

pigsDOfly · 26/12/2018 13:20

It's really scary when they start going out but cats are usually very good at finding their way home and won't go further than they're comfortable with.

Many years ago when my, then, kittens were far younger than yours OP one of them was spooked by something when I answered the front door and, flying passed me bolted outside.

We spent the whole afternoon and evening searching for him imagining all sorts of awful things happening to him; the children were in tears, I was in tears imagining our poor little kitten who was far too young to be out all alone in the world.

I went to bed eventually and was lying awake at about 2.30 in the morning when I heard loud meowing outside, I thought it was wishful thinking at first, but I rushed downstairs and there he was outside the front door having found his way home.

He had a good feed and lots of cuddles and I went to bed a very happy woman. I don't know who was more relieved him or me.

He lived to a good old age and was always a bit of a home body never wandering too far from home.
