to leave 8 week old in car seat at petrol station?

Went in to petrol station. Very small, very quiet. Can see car from shop. No queue.

Lady at front notices I am no longer pregnant (I'm a regular at said station). Said 'who has the baby'

I said 'she's in the car'

She said 'on her own? Goodness no you shouldn't leave her!'

WIBU? Genuinely i thought this was a far better option than waking her up and bringing her in to the shop, out in the fumes, to buckle her back in a minute later.

I'm a new mum and no idea what I'm doing. Feel like I'm just winging it sometimes. This made me feel guilty and question myself massively.

I wouldn't have done it if it were super busy, a huge queue or I couldn't see the car etc...

Oakenbeach absolutely agree. Why anyone thinks that it would somehow be better to have a baby in your arms while you are knocked down and killed is completely beyond me. Confused

treesup I wasn't being judgemental though!! At all actually. I didn't even say the OP was being unreasonable, just saying what I have done, without even saying what I think is right or wrong and pointed out i can see why people do it. I'm allowed to say that I've done things differently, we're all different, doesn't make me judgemental. So need to be so bloody rude!! Also it was a genuine question about the corner shop. Not all petrol stations are set up so you can see the car at all times, and also with some corner shops you would be able to see the car. I was genuinely interested in whether people do this too. I'm sure I'm over cautious at times so don't expect everyone to be like me and certainly wasn't judging. Jeesh some people on mumsnet are just ITCHING to jump on other people's posts. Rude.

Tbh Id judge you for taking the baby out of the car! Who actually does that other than in the world of mn Never, ever, ever have I witnessed a parent filling up, then taking their children out of the car for the 2 minute process of walking across the forecourt to pay. Surely the risk of being harassed to buy sweets in the shop and the risk of the kids being hit by a car is what stops any sane parent from doing that!

"When I just had DS1 I used to take him in sometimes and got funny looks"

Really??! People are odd. Can't see why anyone would give you strange looks for something that's not at all out of the ordinary

treesup · 13/12/2018 22:43

That meant to say if DD/DS had been awake or fussy of course I would of taken them.

Rarotonga · 13/12/2018 22:50

My baby just used to scream every time the car stopped so had to get him out! I quickly learnt to find pay at the pump options!

CrookedMe · 14/12/2018 10:47

I don't even think it's a question of what's riskier, leaving them or taking them, because neither is particularly risky!

It's just a case of - what's the point? They're in their car seat, not going anywhere, so why would you lug them out when there's no need?

Cupcakecafe · 14/12/2018 10:48

I always either use pay at pump or leave dc in the car. I've never taken them out as far as I can remember tbh
