People using mobile phone whilst driving

What is the mentality behind people still using their mobile phones whilst driving despite the dangers & the fact it's illegal?

Casually chit chatting without any thought that they are putting other road users lives in danger.

AIBU to wish these people a slow painful death?

This was a supposed professional driver who killed and got 25 months for each life he killed.

To those of you that do use your phones illegally whilst driving - how would you feel if you killed children whilst using your phone?

Although being deaf is not a bar to holding a driving license for a car or motorbike
Wow imagine that!

The video was of a driver texting and driving but then he put the phone down and crashed later when the cyclist was shouting him.

In that case the cyclist was the one at fault distracting the driver

ivykaty44 · 13/12/2018 18:08

If the driver is distracted by another person talking to him whilst driving, then he’s distracted by a phone. Instead of engaging in another activity a drive should concentrate on what he is doing.
At the time of the driver in the video up thread, he crashed way ahead of the cyclists and there isn’t any shouting or talking at the time of the crash

I hate the people who throw the "I've never had an accident and I always look at my phone while driving, it's all about experience" it's not. Its about selfish people who don't care about other people lives. You want to put your life in danger?great. But what happens when you hit a child? A mother, what happens if you hit someone you know? A few point and a fine is not a strong enough punishment in my opinion.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 13/12/2018 20:24

Maybe the driver should show the video to his insurance company if the accident wasn't his fault...

Maybe they've already seen it on this site:

rate-driver.co.uk/

Not quite sure about the finer legal details, but definitely a site to shame cars by registration numbers (no, I'm not there Grin)

Limensoda · 14/12/2018 10:12

People who do this are arrogant idiots.
I'd have zero tolerance the same as drink driving and ban them on first offence. You are NOT a good driver if you use a phone driving .

Penners99 · 14/12/2018 10:28

The penalty should be £10k fine, lifetime ban and forced donation of a kidney. You might tell I loathe people who do this!

meow1989 · 14/12/2018 10:38

People get very upset when you point out that they should t be on the phone either! I was once followed by a van with someone on the phone all the way up to and including a round about queue. As he pulled to the side of me we made eye contact and I gestured politely at him to put the phone down. Didn't go down well Hmm

People are idiots.

DGRossetti · 14/12/2018 11:19

By the way, can't speak for others, but when they toughed the law up, my employer made everyone sign a document stating that we understood the law, and that we would not break it while driving on company business or in a company car, under terms of "gross misconduct".

I commented at the time that it was add to have to sign a contract not to do something illegal ... but part of the companies operations involved very visible liveried vehicles, and there had already been a couple of incidents where drivers "didn't know" Hmm ...

ivykaty44 · 14/12/2018 11:39

It’s often mobile phone users whilst driving that break many other rules of the road

penners99 a three week ban on the spot with the car impounded and if you don’t collect the car after 4 weeks it gets crushed - if you don’t own the car then it gets given back to owner

Penners99 · 14/12/2018 11:51

Ivy, does not matter who owns the car, it still gets crushed. The kidney donation stays

DGRossetti · 14/12/2018 14:54

Ivy, does not matter who owns the car, it still gets crushed.

can't argue with that. Bearing in mind insurance won't pay for a crushed car, so if your twatbiscuit mate decides to get caught using a phone at the wheel of your car, you're looking at suing them for the cost.

Maybe an alternative is Saudi-stylee removal of the hands ? I suspect offenders would miraculously discover they can use handsfree after all ....

The talk of cutting of hands & handsfree takes on a new meaning

The talk of cutting of hands & handsfree takes on a new meaning

Certainly it's a self-suggesting Public Information video ....

Justaboy · 15/12/2018 13:35

I think that handsfree is of some help but the main problem is that the human 086 stylee brain can't cope with driving and thinking about what there're saying in the phone call.

Which is likely to be more a distraction that having someone sitting beside you, and they too can be a distraction in their own right!
