To not want a tooth pulled a few days before Xmas?

I had a mild tooth ache a month ago and in that time I was due my normal check up with the dentist.
She said that it looked like the tooth was dead and she tested it.
Started to talk about 'pulling it' as it was not worth doing a root canal as it had a massive old filling and the tooth itself was cracking.
She booked me in for the 21st Dec.
But it's not causing me any pain, would AIBU to cancel the appointment and have it done in the new year.
I'm terrified of having a 'dry socket' and not being able to eat anything over Xmas Sad.
Did I mention I hate dentists...

I’m in a similar situation.

I’ll worry about it in the new year, it’s not giving me much grief it just flares up every now and again.

tablelegs · 12/12/2018 15:00

I would change the appointment to the week after.

divadee · 12/12/2018 15:01

after suffering with horrendous toothache all over Christmas once I would get it pulled. What if the pain starts again 8pm Christmas Eve? all the shops and dentists shut etc.... sods law it will happen.

PoisonousSmurf · 12/12/2018 15:12

Don't think it will hurt as the tooth is dead. I might have to worry about it 'exploding' off the filling. Had that happen to a back tooth on the other side (now has a crown).
I've got lots of different types of pain killers at home just in case.

Hope you don't have too much grief over the festive season @TheWickerWoman Flowers

I had dry socket after an extraction earlier on this year and had a horrendous two weeks. The first week I was back at the dentist three days running for it packing so I definitely would avoid having it done that close to Christmas just in case.

TheWickerWoman · 12/12/2018 15:39

@poisonousSmurf thanks, I’m sure it’ll be ok, I’ve not had a flare up for months, it’s one of them that needs sorting but that can be put off. You watch now on Xmas Eve I’ll be in agony ! Haha

What do you think you’ll do?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 12/12/2018 15:42

I'd wait until after Christmas. Get your New Year off to a fun start.

Defender90 · 12/12/2018 15:45

I had a wisdom tooth removed on 19th December last year and had no problems.

If it was me, I would get the tooth out and the risk of pain over the festive period gone.

mummysherlock · 12/12/2018 15:50

YANBU.
I had 2 wisdom teeth out last month. It took 2 weeks to fully recover during which I had stitches, could only eat soft foods and had to alternate paracetamol and ibruprofen to control swelling and jaw pain. Now it’s all healed I’m glad it’s been done but it would be a bloody freezing day in hell before I’d agree to have that done just before Christmas.

OhLemons · 12/12/2018 15:52

I had an extraction earlier this year. I didn't have dry socket but it was sore and I couldn't eat (or sleep) on that side of my face for a few days and it took a couple of weeks for me to be unaware of it.

If you're not in any pain (and the dentist not expecting it to cause any) then I would delay.

rosydreams · 12/12/2018 15:57

i had a emergency appointment 2 days before christmas last year to remove a wisdom tooth i felt so much better after woulds .Gargling purple listerine helped it heal

AlanThePig · 12/12/2018 16:45

I'd get it done on the 21st. Proper toothache is horrendous and I wouldn't leave it to chance that it might develop.

MrsJayy · 12/12/2018 16:48

Oh i just cancelled a 2nd part of root canal for the 21st i really didn't think about it when i took the appointment anyhoo if you are not in pain i would try and rearrange it,

PoisonousSmurf · 17/12/2018 08:57

Thanks all. I'll see what she says. The tooth itself doesn't hurt as I said before, but it seems to be 'leaking' a foul liquid (sorry TMI).
Gaaah! Can't win! I may have to have it out whatever Sad

I'm in a similar situation OP. My dentist has been keeping a watching brief on my back tooth for a long time and said the last time I went for my check up said that, as I'd had two lots of antibiotics for it, it was really time for it to come out. However, I was all for hanging on.

It flared again last week, so was on antibiotics again for five days and conceded that it was time for extraction. Receptionist said did I want it done on Xmas Eve but I declined and postponed until early Jan (New Year week). The last time I had a tooth out, whilst I was lucky that I didn't have any problems, it took at least ten days for the soreness in my jaw to wear off so I didn't want that over Christmas/New Year. My dental practice is very good and said if I have any problems over Christmas to ring when they reopen on 27th and they will get me in as an emergency as they know it's an ongoing problem.

PoisonousSmurf · 22/12/2018 17:32

The deed was done yesterday afternoon. I was the dentist's last appointment of the day as well. Was in there for over 45 minutes.
I had got myself into a bit of a state and she was worried that I was going to faint on her!
Although the tooth was 'dead', as soon as she started to process it hurt a lot! She had given me two injections.
In the end I ended up with five! They had to give me glucose to drink as I was white as a sheet and shaking.
Ashamed to say that I cried Sad.
But after 15 long minutes of pulling, tugging and taking rests in between it came out.
It was a monster tooth with three massive roots. No wonder it took so long.
I stayed in the waiting room for half an hour to make sure I was OK to drive home (had no one to collect me), but I was only a 10 min drive away (no buses).
Only started to eat yoghurt and ice cream this evening.
Salt mouth rinses are so soothing.
But my Xmas celebrations will have to start around New Year lol!

I hope you feel better soon OP. Corsadyl mouth wash is a life saver and clove oil on cotton wool pressed onto the extraction site if you think you've developed dry socket at all, it's one of the medications they use to pack it with. Lots of pain killers and fluid but remember no straws! Flowers
