Aibu re school socks and shoes

whambamthankyou · 12/12/2018 10:23

The Bain of my life is currently trying to get my child's school socks on each day. After washing they are so tight that I either nearly break my hand or his toes trying to get them on, add in a wriggly 4 year old and I get so stressed! Aibu to wonder if there is a school sock hack I don't know about?!

I'd probably just buy bigger socks 😂 is he on the cusp of the sizes?

JurassicGirl · 12/12/2018 10:28

Are you sure you have the right size? I can't say I've ever experienced this & I have 3 in primary school!

ChristmaspArti · 12/12/2018 10:30

Don't tumble dry them. It makes them shrink. Also you could give him rewards ( smarties, chocolate button) for putting them on himself. Practice at the weekend first until he is quick enough.

kaitlinktm · 12/12/2018 10:30

If they are so tight surely they must be uncomfortable for him.

Joinourclub · 12/12/2018 10:31

I find that socks don’t like to be tumble dried. When my dcs socks shrink and lose their stretchiness, it’s time to get new socks!

Yinv · 12/12/2018 10:40

Get new socks a lot bigger. My kids never seemed to wear the size on the label corresponding to their shoe size. Always came up small after tumbling.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 12/12/2018 10:55

Buy a bigger size and get him to put his own socks on. He will need to do it at school for pe.

I tumble dry all underwear, socks and tights never had a shrinkage problem . If they are in the last size of a pack buy a size up.

Bunnybigears · 12/12/2018 10:57

Yabu not to just buy bigger socks.

Racecardriver · 12/12/2018 11:00

Buy socks that fit? It’s not rocket science.

whambamthankyou · 12/12/2018 11:42

They do fit when I first buy them quite obviously! Socks span a few sizes, they must be shrinking in the tumble dryer. I'll try either going for an even bigger size or not tumble drying. Thanks all

Wow this is just ridiculous. Buy bigger socks so your poor little kid doesnt have such tight socks on? How moronic is this question...

TickledOnion · 12/12/2018 11:58

Stretch them over your hands like gloves before you try putting them on him.

HotInWinter · 12/12/2018 12:05

Roll them down, so you have a fat donut, with just the toes unrolled. Put toes in, and unroll the rest of the sock over foot end leg

whambamthankyou · 12/12/2018 12:12

Thanks for that input penis - you really are one aren't you. They don't hurt and I do buy a size bigger had you bothered to read the thread.

I always put my hands into the kids socks like a glove when they come out the washing machine wet. Otherwise I find they shrink when drying.

OverTheHedgeSammy · 12/12/2018 13:42

I find Sainsbury's socks shrink in the dryer quite a bit, so I tend to get the size up. M&S socks don't shrink as much, but they still do shrink, so it depends on where they are in the sock range. They all continue to shrink as well I think. Some of the socks we have now, although the same size as newer ones, really do look a complete size smaller.

It's annoying as the socks are then enormous when you first put them on their little feet! It's not as bad when they get a bit older.

whambamthankyou · 12/12/2018 14:05

Thank you, good tips! Maybe I'll try m&s ones next time.

I've always noticed this with DS 7's school socks, and so has he. He's not on the cusp of sizes, he's a 1, so he wears 12.5 - 3.5. I replaced a sock with a hole in with one from the same pack yesterday, he said "are these new socks?" when he put them on.

Also, I don't have a tumble dryer.

dannydyerismydad · 12/12/2018 14:31

DS wears ASDA school socks. They are great. Stay flexible and easy to get on and off.

His football socks on the other hand are like bandages. They get smaller and tighter with every wash. Tumbling or not makes no difference.

I conclude thinner socks are better

Kitsandkids · 12/12/2018 16:05

We always use M&S plain charcoal grey boys socks. I think they come in packs of 5. I bought 2 packs for each of my boys more than a year ago and they still fit fine. Even with weekly tumble drying.

masterandmargarita · 12/12/2018 16:07

Stop using a tumble dryer?

Melstarrynight · 12/12/2018 16:11

Don't have this problem with m and s socks and they've been tumble dried loads.

Philomensapie · 12/12/2018 16:23

master we don't have a tumble dryer and we have the same problem.

Poodles1980 · 12/12/2018 16:23

M&S and I tumble dry everything. Also get your 4 year old to put their own socks on. Saves the hassle in the long run
