Ds at preschool, attached to a Primary. Tomorrow is their Nativity and he has been telling me he is an angel. Lovely, son, cant wait to come see you singing your songs.

They had a dress rehearsal today and all the classes at the Primary watched. Dd is at the Primary. She has told me this evening that DS is "the only boy angel, lots of girl angels and he and the girls are wearing white and gold sparkly dresses".

I try and make sure my kids know clothes are just clothes. Whatevs. As long as you are comfy and happy I am happy. However dd also said some of her classmates were laughing saying "your brother is a girl".

Ive no idea what the costume is like, they are all provided. So I reckon they are just a bog standard white and gold bit of cloth and thats that. However what if it is a dress? He clearly doesnt care otherwise he wouldnt wear it, so Im happy he is happy, but what if the other kids keep on with the comments given to dd today?

Hold on what about the fourth named angel - Lucifer?

Greensleeves · 11/12/2018 21:44

DS1 as an angel in his Nativity aged 5 is one of my very happiest memories. Even when he took his tinsel halo off and started eating it I was bursting with pride.

The other kids won't care at this age. I'd have a word with DD and make sure she doesn't say anything to make him unsure about being a boy angel though, if she's a bit older and aware he's the only boy.

BollocksToBrexit · 11/12/2018 21:48

Angels weren't pretty little girls skipping around to tinkly music. All the terms used to describe them in the bible are archaic military terms. Angels were warriors.

So it's absolutely right and proper that little boys get to be angels too.

MissDai5y · 11/12/2018 21:48

My OHs mum works in a school and all of their angels were girls until.one parent mentioned they didn't want their boy to be an animal. He wore the same as the other angels and it looked fine.

Did make me wonder though, when did it become a girls role. I can't think of a single female angel.

He shouldn't have any problems, he'll look cute.

mumsastudent · 11/12/2018 21:51

its not a dress its a kaftan!:)

ladydickisathingapparently · 11/12/2018 21:53

He’ll have a wonderful time. Ds3 was cast as Joseph in his nursery nativity. He didn’t want to be Joseph, he wanted to be a penguin. You know, ox, ass, sheep, penguin - obviously. However, he did agree to take part provided he could literally waddle onto stage, penguin stylee. Which he did!

OddBoots · 11/12/2018 21:55

I work in an early years setting, we only do a carol concert not a nativity but we have nativity costumes in our dressing up this time of year and there is one boy who spends most of the day dressed in one of the angel costumes and a few more that will sometimes put it on.

I suspect your ds either asked to be an angel or he targets that costume in the dressing up. It's any child who would laugh at him that needs to be talked with.

crispysausagerolls · 11/12/2018 21:59

At my pre prep, all the boys and girls wore angel dresses and no one xared

I always had boy angels when I was a Reception teacher. They were all volunteers, some wore gowns, some wore white trousers and tunics. One boy's grandmother made him an amazing outfit with huge wings made of real feathers.

glamorousgrandmother · 11/12/2018 22:04

No one whether boy, girl or parent ever questioned it.

guiltynetter · 11/12/2018 22:06

I'm having this quandary except my DD (4) is one of the 3 wise men and the other 2 are boys. I hope nobody laughs! I know it's silly.

Babygrey7 · 11/12/2018 22:08

My DS was an angel, twice, at primary

Arch angels were Gabriel, Michael, Uriel, Raphael (I think, too lazy to google)

...so what is "girly" about that?!

Don't overthink it.

tempester28 · 11/12/2018 22:08

I think all men in that era and location wore what we would now call dresses - so historically accurate? If he is enjoying it then that is all that matters!

tempester28 · 11/12/2018 22:10

Or tunic, gown for men

NotTerfNorCis · 11/12/2018 22:13

That's a lovely photo Oldraver!

I really don't understand the idea that angel roles should be girls. In the Bible they're mighty warriors, and they're not especially assigned a gender anyway. So it's completely appropriate for both boys and girls to play the parts.

Rollerbird · 11/12/2018 22:20

I remember being a king in primary school and its only this thread that's made me think about it being odd as a girl. I have always remembered it as my best part in the nativity! (I was a tree one year)

Chewbecca · 11/12/2018 22:24

Gabriel is definitely a boy.

DS played Gabriel in year 6, it was always played by a boy in his school, it was a great honour. They didn't dress up though (I know, a bit weird).

Furiosa · 11/12/2018 22:33

There are 7 archangels; Michael (Sunday), Gabriel (Monday), Raphael (Tuesday), Uriel (Wednesday), Selaphiel (Thursday), Raguel or Jegudiel (Friday), and Barachiel (Saturday).

You could make a flaming sword prop and put gold colour plastic armour on him. It will distinguish him from the girls Grin

But angels were sexless.

Spanglylycra · 11/12/2018 22:36

There was a boy angel in our school nativity last week, he wore a white Elvis suit with wings and totally rocked it!

Coconut0il · 11/12/2018 22:38

DS1 was an angel in his Reception Nativity, very cute.

The comments about him being a girl sound like ones immature Year 4 or 5 children might make. I would advise your DD to mention it to her teacher if it's bothering her.

edwinbear · 11/12/2018 22:41

DD is going to be a wise man tomorrow, all the wise men are girls this year. They have ample boys to choose from. Your DD’s friends are probably just acting ‘big’ and generally playing up to each other.

Smith888 · 11/12/2018 22:49

Is he blonde? I always found for some bizarre reason my teachers would always choose the blondes to be angels, and the prettiest girl, of course, was Mary!
