Aibu to say AT LEAST read all the OP's posts thoroughly

This is a constant issue but seems particularly bad at the moment.

Posters putting replies on threads without rtft.

Now I can understand not reading every post if it's a very long thread (though it's not compulsory to reply).

But to not even read the OP'S posts - which usually gives you an indication of what's been said and certainly gives all the information other posters are replying using - is SO ARROGANT!

Some I've read recently the poster clearly hasn't even read the VERY FIRST POST properly and missed crucial info.

Seriously SO ANNOYING!

Also I can't remember how to do it but I'm sure some wise mner will and can post it - but you can set it so that OPS posts are highlighted too so you can scan through and find their posts and read them BEFORE you make a suggestion that's already been rejected & the reason or other similarly daft comment.

It's making threads very repetitive to read.

OP posts:

can people PLEASE stop to think before replying on a thread that is 500+ posts long and was started 3 days ago. It is REALLY unlikely you will have anything of value to add.

Hmm

why would the first reply have more value than the last? If people want to comment, that's what the forum is for. It's a bit like the DM, you read it to pass the time, but you don't take anything really seriously, do you?

I think some posters are far too invested in this forum and I am guessing it's a very good thing most of the suggestions to "improve" it are joyfully ignored by MNHQ, because they tend to be contradictory anyway.

Fluffyears · 11/12/2018 22:27

What I’d love is ‘I have 2 dd’s aged 5 and 6’ you cab guarantee some bright spark will ask ‘do you have children?’ ‘How old are your DC’s’ etc, at least read the opening OP properly.

IamSusan · 11/12/2018 22:36

It depends how the OP is written, when it's an illegible mix of random acronym: DC2 (2nd child? 2 year old child?), DF (dear father, dear friend?) at least DDog looks ridiculous but is clear to understand.

diamantegal · 11/12/2018 22:38

Slightly defensive posting - highlighting the OP's postings doesn't work as well on the app. It only highlights the name, which is harder to spot than the whole post.

That said, I still do scan, so I'm just defending others!

Disquieted1 · 11/12/2018 22:41

Cba rtft but I agree with Ddog.

1CantPickAName · 11/12/2018 22:43

What’s up OP? Did your Snap and Fart put a hole in your Penis Beaker? Have you tried a Penguin Bollard? Maybe taking in a lodger would help? Or get a cleaner? Perhaps you should LTB? Never mind, if all else fails, maybe a Little Korean Lady will share her lunch with you?

Sorry, I didn’t read the whole thread 🤷🏼‍♀️

CrazyToast · 11/12/2018 22:47

Lol OP are you new to the internet? People never read the posts or the comments. They just shoot their mouths of via their fingers.

SemperIdem · 11/12/2018 22:50

I was a very early replier to a thread once. I hadn’t read it properly and made a complete twat of myself, had to apologise quite profusely to the op. If I’d read it properly to start with, my response would have been completely different. I’ve been careful since then.

InsideLegMeasurement · 12/12/2018 07:14

Some people say that they post the same thing as everyone else so that the OP can see the weight of numbers or the distribution of views around an idea. I hadn't thought of that before and was baffled as to why people would bother saying literally the same thing as others upthread. It makes a weedy kind of sense, I s'pose.

If you can't contribute something new, keep your beak out, say I.

AmericanHousewifefan · 12/12/2018 08:54

I agree Graphista. It annoys me when someone is looking for advise and the first 10 posts are asking questions that were answered in the OP.

Regarding people posting the same thing as PP's. If I'm looking for advise (I usually nc) then the more replies I get gives a better indication of which way is best IYSWIM. I always think there is more weight in numbers.

Nanny0gg · 12/12/2018 09:02

I did ask MN if the OP's posts could be automatically highlighted

Apparently it's being looked into....

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 12/12/2018 09:16

why would the first reply have more value than the last?

Well, if the OP posts two pages in that she's taken the advice from the first reply and the situation is now resolved, any advice on the fourth page is going to be a bit out of date.

Or if the OP originally posts about her BIL wanting to bring his Yorkshire terrier at Christmas and then adds 60 posts later that he's just bought an Alsatian, anyone just responding to the first post is no longer really helping.

WaterBird · 12/12/2018 09:22

I agree.
I tend not to reply to long threads with 100 or 200 posts, unless they are just amusing chat questions.
Also think it's really important for OP to go back to their thread. The advice can change quite a bit when there is a new update/more information is given.

Willow2017 · 12/12/2018 09:23

I use the 'desktop site' which is infinitely easier to use than the app. Ops posts are highlighted as are mine.

Drive me mad when people dont bother reading the first post properly never mind subsequent posts by op.
You get a situation where op has maybe agreed on a solution/accepted they were bu/ has explained themselves numerous times and still posters are asking the same questions/ jumping on op for bu/making up a story they think.they read and replying with thier amazing advice on that instead of the real point of the post.

The comprehension skills on here sometimes is mind boggling!

CBA2RTFT · 12/12/2018 09:24

I feel if you are contributing via the written word, you need to do your best to ensure it is correct

Yes, but maybe the "would of" crew are doing their best? Not everyone is gifted with your faultless facility with language, Missmouse.
Try focusing on the essence of what a poster is trying to say - it may well be a sensible and insightful - rather than dismiss it because of its misplaced apostrophe.

And YANBU OP: you'd have to have no life to RTFT sometimes, bug the OPs info is kinda crucial to the thread.

CBA2RTFT · 12/12/2018 09:25

*but

WaterBird · 12/12/2018 09:27

Oh, DF. That one always gets to me.
Someone once posted something relating to their "DF", using male pronouns, relating to a harmless lifestyle choice. My first thought: "Why would you care if your dad spends time doing a harmless hobby?" Until I read on...

PositivelyPERF · 12/12/2018 09:31

It’s just as annoying when a poster misreads something or has xposted with the OP and everyone piles on to say RTFT, etc, even AFTER that poster has apologised for their mistake. The irony. 😁

WaterBird · 12/12/2018 09:31

I think there should be an option for the OP to have their thread closed once they feel they have received enough responses, so that there's no possibility of them being told they're unreasonable once they have already agreed to something.

MissionItsPossible · 12/12/2018 10:40

@EmpressAdultHumanFemale
I agree, but it doesn't help when an OP namechanges halfway through a thread & their new posts aren't highlighted. Someone might think they've read all the OP's posts but missed all the ones on the last couple of pages.

They still get highlighted, that’s how people get caught out on a name change. Believe me, I should know!
