How much is too much food for 10.5 month old

Name changed for this. DS (10.5 months old) had his first day at nursery and I get a call shortly before the end of the day where I'm told he has vomited and so the 48 hour exclusion applies.

He was pretty upset during the day but other than that no temperature, diarrhoea etc. So I collected him thinking he had a little milk vomit. Although the vomit had been wiped, he absolutely stank of it. He brought up his lunch and dinner apparently and his cot was completely covered. I have given him a bath and washed his hair three times but still struggling to get the vomit out.

Anyway my point is, it was a big one and he has never been sick to that extent before, just some milk regurgitation at the most.

He is fine in himself and hasn't been sick since. I was given the sheet at the end of the day explaining what he ate and honestly, it seems so much to me that I'm not surprised he had to bring it all up!

AIBU or is this too much for his age?

  • toast for breakfast (had nothing at home beforehand)
  • chicken tikka curry rice and naan bread for lunch
  • trifle as dessert for lunch
  • pastry snack
  • banana pudding snack
  • 5 oz milk
  • naan bed snack

Bearing in mind he slept for over 4 hours of the 9 he was there, this seems like so much food! Granted the portion sizes may be small and I wouldn't know that or how much he was actually eating of the portions, but in comparison with me he has 3 milks and 2 large meals so the nursery food seems excessive. It's not as though he is underfed at home, he is 75th centile in weight.

I did say when collecting him that he may have been sick as he ate too much but was told he definitely didn't have too much food, was just eating well. I know he loves to eat so could just keep going even when full.

As well as the exclusion period causing me childcare issues when at work I really felt sorry for him so keen to ensure this doesn't happen again.

It's my first time dealing with a nursery so before I ask them to reduce his intake, i wanted to check if this seems like too much food! Thanks!

That must've been very stressful for you both on his first day. I would send them back after the exclusion and see if it happens again.
Maybe the change of environment, new food, stress contributed to the perfect storm? It's hard to say without knowing quantities. Are you able to stay home whilst the baby is off?

Tinypause · 11/12/2018 05:28

It's very difficult to say as we don't know portion size. I have to say though, there is no fruit/veg snacks...doesn't seem like the healthiest of meal plans for a 10 month old.

EmUntitled · 11/12/2018 06:24

It sounds like overeating to me, that is a lot of food for a baby! If he isn't sick again in the next 24 hours, its probably not a bug.

"Was told he definitely didn't have too much food"
How could they possibly know this about a child on their first day? You know your son and what he usually eats, I would have another word with them on his return. Also I would suggest that fruit or veg would be a more suitable snack than a pastry or some naan bread.

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/12/2018 06:27

Nah that's too much.

They don't need those snacks.

Sounds like food is the way to entertain the kids.

Your poor ds.

Ceecee18 · 11/12/2018 06:35

That is quite a lot. The snacks especially, and they aren't great. The milk is unnecessary if he's eating well. When DD started nursery I told them to only give her milk before her nap if she hadn't eaten well at lunch time as she didn't need both.

Highpeak · 11/12/2018 06:37

If that's a lot more than you would give him, it's probably too much. Add that to the stress of the new situation.

As an aside, you need to use adult shampoo to get the vomit smell out (I use a tea tree one) ,baby stuff just doesn't cut it.

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 11/12/2018 07:24

@avocadoincident yes the stress could well have contributed. I have no family around who can have him and don't want to take time off first week back so DH will take the day off but as is self employed doesn't get paid

@Tinypause @EmUntitled yes no fruit or veg really other than it being mixed in the dessert. It just seems so heavy! He's never had curry before so 2 naan bread portions in one day doesn't seem like an easy introduction to it!

@Highpeak thanks for the tip! Smell is horrendous!

Even if it's only tiny portions why are they giving pastry and pudding instead of fruit and veg. Not a nursery I'd be happy with tbh.
