To not deep clean house before move

Backstory is our buyers have massively pissed us about. Our place went to best and final offers, the buyers went in really high (over asking price). Estate agent advised they were a good bet, chain free, young couple with small child. We obviously accepted their offer.

They really started dragging their heels, and then 2 weeks before exchange they dropped their offer massively. Everyone was so far down the road with surveys, solicitors etc that we all dug deep to salvage the sale (essentially is, and the two other above us have absorbed their shortfall, which is now leaving us out of pocket).

Basically I feel pretty resentful about it, wibu and very pretty not to do a proper clean of the house? Obviously I won't leave it in a tip, but I feel like I don't want to waste my time scrubbing cupboards for people who essentially fucked us over.

BumsexAtTheBingo · 10/12/2018 22:32

I’ve never deep cleaned a house I’ve moved out of. It would be clean and hoovered after furniture removed but I haven’t washed windows down or scrubbed cupboards etc.
I always deep clean the house I’ve bought when I move in and would regardless of what the previous occupants had done and I think anyone would so I’m not going to waste my time cleaning what will just be cleaned again.

seventhgonickname · 10/12/2018 22:34

I always thoroughly clean a house when I move in.I don't mind a bit of dirt but it has to be my dirt.

mineofuselessinformation · 10/12/2018 22:39

I left my first house presentable and with all its light bulbs, etc., but did take all curtain rails and even swept out the coal bunker (solid fuel heating) before we left as they had screwed us down so much on the price.

dahliaaa · 10/12/2018 22:42

I’ve never deep cleaned a house - have moved around quite a lot.

I make sure the house is clean and tidy for viewing - and ‘sell as seen’, so make sure it’s ‘clean and tidy’ when I move out.

It wouldn’t enter my head to clean carpets unless there had been an accident since the last viewing.

delboysskinandblister · 10/12/2018 22:44

basic clean and hoover

then subscribe them to some pretty salacious publications before you leave mwahahahaaa

ThatOneHurt · 10/12/2018 22:47

They knew exactly what they were doing.

Prawns in the curtains indeed.

I would not be cleaning a bloody thing.

SassitudeandSparkle · 10/12/2018 22:49

and the two other above us have absorbed their shortfall

Do you mean that you passed the reduction up the chain?! Do you think your vendors feel like this about you?

WilburforceRaven · 10/12/2018 23:01

Fuck 'em. I wouldn't clean FA in that case.

screamer1 · 10/12/2018 23:06

@SassitudeandSparkle I hope not. We absorbed the bulk of it but couldn't streetcars ourselves any further art all. The top of the chain lowered their price slightly for the people we are buying from, and we increased our price substantially to make up the difference. I'm sure they're not delighted but they know that we didn't screw anyone over and are just responding to events.

*streetcars = stretch

Katedotness1963 · 10/12/2018 23:11

I've deep cleaned every house I've moved out of. And left soap, toilet paper, bin bags and a few cleaning supplies.

We bought this house in August, moved in to find the dirty bastards must have never cleaned the oven, it took days to clean. The master bedroom shower is still stained. It took two days to get the water build up off the water dispenser on the fridge. They left half filled paint tins in a cupboard, wood off cuts in the garage, and weed killing chemicals in the shed. Fuckers!

EyUpOurKid · 10/12/2018 23:15

I left our house immaculate. Washed all the carpets (I knew they were keeping them in) all walls, skirting boards and doors were washed, wiped, dusted etc. Got some PVC cleaner and did all the door and window frames. You could have eaten your dinner off every surface. But, the people who bought off us were lovely, and my pride wouldn't have allowed any less than sparkling.

You got gazundered (is that the phrase?) The people who did this to us (day before completion) were told to fuck off and we put the house back on the market, they'd paid for surveys so they lost out...but we weren't at risk of losing a house to move into.

I wouldn't be deep cleaning for people who intentionally fucked me over.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 10/12/2018 23:19

Kate houses I've moved into have often consciously left half tins of paint - usually its the same paint as on the walls so left the tin case you want to "touch up." We used to keep paint like this as my parents generation did and it was mormal

SassitudeandSparkle · 10/12/2018 23:32

I'd count yourself lucky tbh OP, stressful though it is. If I was in a chain and someone expected me to change the value of my house because theirs had been changed, it wouldn't be happening!

dulcefarniente · 10/12/2018 23:43

Invite your neighbours round for a farewell party and fill them in on what the new people did. Canvas their opinions on what level of cleaning to do. If they say don't do any you will know that if the gazunderers subsequently say something about the state you left the house in the neighbours won't judge you.

Jamiefraserskilt · 10/12/2018 23:44

I always clean a house I leave. Sadly, this has not been reciprocated in our new houses.
This one we are in now:
Took the bulbsthe
Took all but one window lock key
Took the handles from the kitchen doors
Took all the screws out of the curtain track supports (where they click on) but left the tracks in place
Pumped the last bit of oil out of the tank leaving us with fumes and no heating in the coldest winter weekend of the decade.
Turned off the water and took the stop tap turning handle.
Left mousetraps with dead mice in under the stairs
Left the loo unflushed with a man poo in it.
Did not clean the bath, probably since our last viewing, super scud mark
Completely filled every wheelie bin to the point the lids wouldn't close and left rubbish bags piled alongside them
Took the door numbers
Did not redirect their post and expected us to hand deliver it to their new place
Did not tell relatives/lovers they had moved. Made for some interesting conversations on the doorstep!
And the best one.....
Had told the elderly neighbours they had sold the house to a couple of swinging hells angels with asbos and addiction issues!

Take whatever ideas you want from that lot.

Oh, and we paid over market price for this place!

WednesdaySpinner · 10/12/2018 23:50

I'm clearly bitter

You are being very restrained compared to how I feel with our buyers right now! Our house will not be getting cleaned apart from the absolute bare minimum and I may well resort to some of the measures I have seen listed above! DP is a very calm type and keeps saying 'it won't erase the stress they have put us through'. It won't but it will make me feel slightly better!

PrimalLass · 10/12/2018 23:53

Also leave a huge poop in the toilet.

Popc0rn · 11/12/2018 00:00

Accidentally leave the iron on the carpet.

Merryoldgoat · 11/12/2018 00:03

I’m at a loss at how on Earth you have time to deep clean. Until moving day the house is just a mess of boxes and then once the movers arrive you have to go!

When dies deep cleaning and carpet cleaning take place?

My current house was so disgusting when I moved in I don’t think they’d cleaned it properly in years - just enough to be acceptable for viewings. It stank of smoke and the kitchen was utterly vile.

LaLaLamp · 11/12/2018 00:11

I always leave a house spotless but in the circumstances, they don't sound like the kind of people who deserve to be treated well. I'd probably still do it but not go so far as clean carpets etc.

sunshineroo · 11/12/2018 00:14

I think you get back what you put out in this world, so I would t do anything deliberately however I would;

  • take everything you entitled to - every bulb, blind, curtain rail, inner drawers (cutlery etc) and bits from fitted appliances - eg cutlery stand from dishwasher and grill pan from
Oven. Then briefest clean only
maddening · 11/12/2018 00:24

I have decided that if I ever move I will sell to move to rented and buy from there - takes some of the power back-lower offers fuck off and put it back on the market.
Yanbu op - fuck em

ChristmasSprite · 11/12/2018 00:43

Did you buy my house Penguin?! Grin

I did leave it spotless, but I did cleaning as I cleared each room in the weeks leading up to leaving. Gave the grass its last mow, cleaned windows in and out. The kitchen was the hardest work, but I did wash out all the cupboards and leave the cooker sparkling.

From the sounds of all the horrific stories on here I think that each vendor should have to pay for professional cleaning upon vacating! (As part of contract). No-one should ever have to move their family into shit house. Others crap and bacteria is vile and shouldn't be allowed.

Those saying leaving a crap down the loo...jeeez! Really?!?!?

I do get that you were out under duress OP, but, at the end of the day you sucked it up for a reaso, to benefit yourself, because you were prepared to lose out in order to get the house you wanted. It doesn't make what they did right, but you chose to accept that in order to get what you wanted.

If you felt it was so unacceptable, why did you accept it. Let it go; you got what you wanted AND the rest of the chain took a blow on your behalf too. I would think myself lucky for that, you be happy in your new home and just leave it reasonable and literally move on.

ChristmasSprite · 11/12/2018 00:44

Gazzumping, not guzunderingGrin
