Have to repeat blood tests again - help!

IBSworriescanitbe · 10/12/2018 13:38

I had low white blood count and had repeat test two weeks later, just called for results and curt receptionist said doctor wants me to repeat test again in six weeks. No doctor available to talk to me :(
I have bad health anxiety...
The receptionist wouldn't tell me what was wrong on test.
Does a six week test indicate the bloods are a bit better and non urgent, does anyone have any idea?
Thanks so much!

It's certainly not urgent if they haven't even given you a call back from the doctors. I once had a massive panic about DD's test results and the receptionist eventually read out the doctors note to me (even though obviously she wouldn't be able to explain it).

Can you go in and get them to print out the results? That's what we do at my doctors. Then you can see if levels are changing much.

Then make an appointment for a dr to call you and discuss?

IBSworriescanitbe · 10/12/2018 13:46

I can, but I did that in the past and panicked as a specific level was low and google bringing up scary results, so I may panic myself more.
I had low white blood cells so assuming it is still that, would a six week wait to retest suggest they have improved a bit I wonder?

Ah, maybe best not to do that then!

Yes I would assume that they were improving but still needed monitoring. Obviously I'm no medical professional though!

Hope it all gets sorted for you.

I once had an urgent situation. The GP called me herself and left a message to call her back (I was out). It was a Friday afternoon. I called her on the Monday morning and was referred to hospital immediately. (Everything is fine now.)

So I think six weeks suggests 'let's keep an eye on this' instead of 'OMG potential disaster'.

Can you make an appointment to talk to your GP about the results? They can explain what's going on.

IBSworriescanitbe · 10/12/2018 14:08

Yeah, I had cancer in my 20s so always on high alert.
The receptionist has reluctantly given me a phone appointment for Friday.
How can I distract myself till then.
I wish the doctor had provided more info. Am I crazy or would most ppl panic at being told to repeat a blood test with no explanation??

Try not to worry, I’ve had this. Anything urgent and you’d be asked to come in immediately xx

IBSworriescanitbe · 10/12/2018 14:23

Blood cancer for e.g.?

If they think you have leukaemia they dont just tell you to come back for a retest in 6 weeks. Sounds more like levels are still low but recovering to me.

lemony7 · 10/12/2018 14:59

They’re just monitoring your bloods. Try not to freak out. If it was anything to worry about they’d have said, or would have given you an appt.

FWIW I’m on weekly blood tests for monitoring, but I’m pretty sick and waiting for surgery.

My neutrophils were low, the GP rang me at 7pm asked where I was and said I needed to go to haematology now
So 6 weeks I wouldn't worry about
I was diagnosed with neutropenia so I now take meds and see haematology every 12 weeks Smile

IBSworriescanitbe · 10/12/2018 15:21

Oh yes it was my neutrophils and lymphocites low last time..

I had a low white blood count about 8 weeks ago, they asked for a repeat in 6 weeks and 2 weeks ago I was told they are all fine again. I had pneumonia at the start of September and a couple of bad colds in the run up to that and they said it was more than likely that I was just finishing fighting infections and just a bit run down. Have you been run down?

IBSworriescanitbe · 10/12/2018 15:37

Yes I have had problems with my stomach, still do actually, also been very stressed, not sure if stress affects blood counts though..

Begged and got to speak to doctor. Neutrophils better but lymphocytes are low 🤔

When my bloods showed an abnormality I had a phone call about 8pm from a consultant (bloods done at hospital as a regular outpatient thing) to go back in the next morning for repeats. If it was urgent they'd be in touch, you're probably borderline on something minor (ie white cells raised but maybe you had a cold when the bloods were taken initially). Good luck!
