To think Christmas cards are not a sign of popularity

Just heard a few people in work having a bit of a competitive conversation about how many cards they get every Christmas. It was as if they were trying to outdo each other and prove who was the most popular.

The rest of us just kept out of it, but AIBU to be surprised that adults would see number of cards received as a sign of their popularity? I have lots of friends I don't send cards to, and some people I just send cards to out of habit, and not because I see much of them anymore.

I thought comparing numbers of cards was something children did. Maybe IABU.

Excellent opportunity for a little fun here. Don’t say a word until they’ve finished comparing, then just drop in casually with a number that’s always one or two (hundred) more than the top number. Straight faced.

It's just a sign of how many people you know who like to send cards, nothing more!

I, however, am exceedingly popular and have about 60 cards displayed from my family and friends that I have saved from the previous 10 christmases.

It all sounds very childish! You were well to stay out of it.

Cosmos45 · 10/12/2018 11:43

Definitely not a just reserved for children. My mum does this every year, if fact you can guarantee on xmas the day one of the first things she'll announce is how many cards she got. All whilst slightly wincing and said in a way that makes it seem like they're a slight inconvenience to her.. It's like playing bingo waiting to hear how long she'll be in the house before announcing how many cards she got this year.. very odd! and definitely done in a way to max out the opportunity to show how popular she is - she is mid 70's..

caperplips · 10/12/2018 11:44

For my mother is most certainly is - she lives for getting cards and regularly tells me how many she has. I have zero interest in sending or receiving cards myself and she cannot understand this at all

PerfectPeony · 10/12/2018 11:44

I only have 2 cards so far.. Only older members of my family seem to send cards now. My friends and siblings don’t. Although I’m not in any way popular anyway Grin

We’re quite traditional though so everyone gets a card from us!

TooTrueToBeGood · 10/12/2018 11:47

Quite a few people I know make a point of sending cards to people that have sent them cards. How many cards you receive can therefore be indicative of how many you send.

Who cares though? I can't think of any rational reason for judging someone based on their christmas card count.

Cheeeeislifenow · 10/12/2018 11:48

I hope not..I have none!

dancinginthehall · 10/12/2018 11:49

Yes, I suppose my mum would probably see cards received as a sign of how socially functioning you are, although even she is beginning to realise that sending cards is sadly going out of fashion.
