My ds (11) has always had a hearty appetite but in the last few weeks it has rocketed to where I feel a bit concerned

Today for example
Breakfast 2 slices marmite on toast and banana
Mid morning he said he was hungry so I gave him an apple
Lunch bacon roll and cucumber sticks
Mid afternoon he said he was hungry again! So I chopped some babybels up on crackers.
Tea roast chicken dinner.
He’s just made a ham sandwich!

If I say no he waits for me to go out of sight and steals food by hiding it under his top!

He has ASD - not sure if that’s relevant or could it just be a growth spurt? He’s been eating this amount for about 6 weeks now

What do you think?

Can you give him more fruit and veg?

Carrott sticks?
Cabbage
Pear
Grapes
Orange
Celery
Etc?

LondonLassInTheNorthPole · 09/12/2018 20:13

Will feel more full but without the added stress of lots of calories and sugar

Tirednessandmoretiredness · 09/12/2018 20:14

What's his weight? Honestly it doesn't sound that much to me. My 3 year old eats almost as much!

Pachyderm1 · 09/12/2018 20:15

That doesn’t seem like too much for an eleven year old. Is he active? How’s his weight? Maybe up the protein and keep an eye on his weight, but I wouldn’t worry too much.

SharonCarter · 09/12/2018 20:15

Thanks yes I do try and offer a wider variety of fresh fruit and veg but all he’ll it is apples, bananas, carrots, broccoli and cucumber so I include these everyday

Of course he loves all the bad things like biscuits and crisps!

He's growing! I remember being that age and being constantly hungry

Cleo18 · 09/12/2018 20:17

Depends on portion size but I don't think that is a lot for his age. Is he overweight?

Leeds2 · 09/12/2018 20:17

I don't think that sounds like an awful lot, for a growing boy.

SharonCarter · 09/12/2018 20:19

He is 5 foot 7 and 10 and a half stones - I think he probably is on the big size. But he has always been huge, I was induced at 38 weeks because he was so big then 11lbs born he couldn’t fit into those plastic compartments (boxes you put your new born in) you have in hospital when you have a baby!

My ds and dd would be massively hungry if that was all they were allowed to eat!!

cestlavielife · 09/12/2018 20:20

He is 11 and growing. He will eat constantly for the next nine years
Unless he is actually overweightvkeep feeding him healthy food whole meal toast etc

CatLadyToddlerMother · 09/12/2018 20:20

My 3 year old has eaten a similar amount today so doesn't sound like much for an 11 year old

SharonCarter · 09/12/2018 20:21

Ok thanks I feel much better now- maybe it’s not that much after all (although that’s all I know about - I’m sure he’s taking bags of quavers and milky bars when I’m not looking!)

OP posts:
SharonCarter · 09/12/2018 20:22

I didn’t think it was not enough though? He has 3 meals and snacks in between and supper as well!

OP posts:
dippledorus · 09/12/2018 20:23

He needs a better breakfast. Two slices of toast isn’t enough.

He’s a growing boy. Hollow legs. More dinner more pasta more protein.

Dotty1970 · 09/12/2018 20:23

You said maybe it's not that much.... There's no maybe.
I feel sorry for him, he's having to hide food from you due to being hungry!? ....

fastyellowcar · 09/12/2018 20:23

I wouldn't worry, it's probably a growth spurt. Today my 12 year old ds had:

Bowl of cereal
2 slices of toast

Yoghurt and fruit mid morning snack

Lunch: cheese sandwich, crisps, apple, yoghurt, flapjacks

Afternoon snack bread and marmite

Dinner: full roast, same portion size as dh

Pudding: crumble and custard.

Pre bed snack: toasted cheese sandwich

Pretty typical intake for him each day. He's slim and athletic, appetite of a horse and metabolism out of this world.

Moominfan · 09/12/2018 20:25

Can you fill him up on some dense foods. Peanut butter, greek yogurt. Nuts, chicken pieces ect

SharonCarter · 09/12/2018 20:26

Dotty I think your comments are totally out of order - of course he doesn’t have to hide food from me - he knows really that I know he’s taken some crisps or whatever. To him it’s a big joke Not sure why you would post such silly comments??

OP posts:
Philomensapie · 09/12/2018 20:27

That sounds fine both to DD 11 and to me. Also, DD's quite capable of getting her own snacks.

SharonCarter · 09/12/2018 20:27

Moomim yes I give him cooked chicken breast, but he doesn’t like stuff like nuts so it’s always a challenge!

Fatted · 09/12/2018 20:27

My very tall and skinny 5YO could happily knock that back in a day. And probably ask for more.

AJPTaylor · 09/12/2018 20:28

My nephews had hollow legs at the age. One had 5 weetabix for breakfast daily. Unless he is overweight, feed him more!

TheMamaYo · 09/12/2018 20:28

Are teenager boys not known for their appetite? Grin My boy eats a lot more than that daily, he is 12 and always hungry. Also really skinny because he is growing so fast now.

If he is not overweight, please let him listen to his body. Yoghurts, fruit, non sugary cereal or an extra sandwich etc won’t do him harm. Having to start sneaking food because he is hungry might build a negative pattern around eating. I remember my brothers eating Is out of the house during their teenage years too!

SharonCarter · 09/12/2018 20:28

Ok thanks all, think I’ll join him for a ham sandwich Wink
