I paid some cheques in today .... via my phone! No need to trudge into town with angry DC, queue for ages, pay for extortionate parking !

Apparently they will cash overnight rather than the 3 working days of old too!

News to me but sounds good.

bumblenbean · 09/12/2018 18:17

Ooh this is brilliant! I’ve just been grumbling today about when I’m going to find the time to get into town to pay in 2 cheques Smile

Can you do it via normal online banking or does it have to be via the app?

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 09/12/2018 18:37

Looks like Nat West don’t have it. Sad

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 09/12/2018 18:38

Thank you for this! I am with HSBC and didn't realise so have these annoying trips to the Post Office to pay them in!

Ohyesiam · 09/12/2018 18:39

DGRossetti ( nice name btw) can you not put them on at a post office?

captainprincess · 09/12/2018 18:45

My bank, Halifax, do this.
Everyone saying they don't receive cheques/haven't used cheques for year, DVLA only issue cheques for car tax refunds so it proved very useful for that.

M4J4 · 09/12/2018 18:50

Natwest should get it soon, they keep on harping about their best mobile app award Grin

DGRossetti · 09/12/2018 19:02

DGRossetti ( nice name btw) can you not put them on at a post office?

Thanks Smile and Confused - not quite sure what you mean ?

santababyconvertible · 09/12/2018 19:11

Ohhhhh this is exciting. Wonder if I can do this with first direct. They are part of the same group so 🤞

mumsastudent · 09/12/2018 22:16

More years ago than I care to think - pre computers! - cheques used to take 3 days to clear - why oh why in this day & age does it take so long?

BeachtheButler · 09/12/2018 22:23

Since my bank is next door to my local pub, I'm going to stick to the old fashioned way of paying in, if that's OK.

ihatethecold · 09/12/2018 22:32

Do first direct or tsb do this.

Kikithewitch · 09/12/2018 22:34

I use a ridiculous amount of cheques paying for stuff at school. I use a full cheque book about every 2 months.
They are finally swapping to online payments in January as they are going cashless, thank goodness.

redastherose · 09/12/2018 22:37

Wow I had no idea about this - thanks for posting.

Shenanagins · 09/12/2018 22:37

OMG, I had no idea that my bank did this! Thanks!

birdling · 10/12/2018 00:05

How can they tell that the cheque hasn't been tampered with?

greenlanes · 10/12/2018 00:43

Not First Direct - called them to check this evening. It seems as if they will be speeding up processing of cheques so they clear in 24 hours but those cheques will still need to be sent to FD or paid in at HSBC branch. So in the pipeline but no confirmed date ie not during 2019.

Atchiclees · 10/12/2018 02:26

We do this, and also bank cheques at the post office. Before then we would end up with out of date cheques as never find time to go into a branch as they are a pain to get to and often end up paying to park.

DGRossetti · 10/12/2018 09:53

How can they tell that the cheque hasn't been tampered with?

Presumably by sight ?

Ultimately there are 4 key pieces of information on a cheque:

1 - bank details of the person whose cheque it is
2 - double-entry details of amount
3 - name of payee
4 - date
5 - (optional) cheque guarantee details

all topped off with the originators signature

As long as they are in order, and the cheque isn't stolen, there's no reason not to honour it. Especially since it has to be paid into a bank account, so can be traced onwards if there's fraud.

(Incidentally, the bold bit is why - despite my very real and visceral hatred of cheques - they're here to stay. Whatever banks say. They're the only way outside of cash where the recipient doesn't need to disclose anything more than his name. Until we have replacement system, it's not going anywhere ...)

MadameFoner · 10/12/2018 10:07

Thanks OP! I detest cheques but some people still pay my husband them, I'm with Halifax so I will definitely use this!

santababyconvertible · 11/12/2018 13:58

All those cheques cashed today!

WingingItStill · 11/12/2018 14:12
