To think this can't be "normal"

Most mornings as soon as I walk upstairs to get ready I start feeling jittery,my hands go icy cold and my heart races and beats hard.
My legs and arms feel weak.
After 40 mins or so it gradually goes and my hands go back warm again.
The doctors say it's all anxiety.
I do suffer from Generalized anxiety disorder and I have the nervous feeling all day long.
Some days I feel sick and have stomach ache.
Can this morning events really be anxiety tho?
The cold hands,racing heart?
I wasn't even aware I was nervous until then.

Could it be tied to your bloodsugars?
It could also be subconciously expecting this feeling to come as part of your morning routine. Can you alter your routine? Put everything you need for the mornings downstairs for a week; shower on waking and complete the rest of your routine downstairs?

Jackshouse · 09/12/2018 10:24

When I read your first two setences I thought the rest of your post was going to be about how you hate your job and you find it very stressful. These are symptoms of anxiety/stress.

YeOldeTrout · 09/12/2018 10:30

What happens if you cut out caffeine?

ThatOneHurt · 09/12/2018 10:32

I knew a woman who's mum was housebound for 20 years with "agoraphobia" because every time she left the house she would have shortness of breath and palpitations.
Some whack GP diagnosed her with anxiety and agoraphobia which the her and her family took for gospel until 20 years later a decent doctor looked at her heart and realised she had a heart condition.

My point being, it's too easy for GP's to throw the anxiety label out.

I'm 9 months pregnant and been suffering with severe shortness of breath and palpitations. Thankfully they took it quite seriously but I shut down any HCP who tried to fob it off as "stress".
One MW was doing my obs and noticed that they were all high and said "That can happen when you're stressed."

Eh? No one mentioned stress? I hadn't mentioned any stress, anxiety or anything of the sort. I was admitted with shortness of breath yet she jumped to that without even asking.

My point being - DONT let the fact that you suffer from anxiety poo poo what could be symptoms for something else.

Annoyingly with these things they can make anxiety worse so it's hard to know which came first and which exasperates what more.
But get it checked out and don't let yourself be fobbed off.

Have you had your iron levels checked recently (including ferritin levels)?
I’d try taking an iron supplement for a few weeks and see if things improve.

SuchAToDo · 09/12/2018 10:35

Op does this happen only on days you are going out, (I mean will it still happen on a day you are staying home?)

If you think it's more than anxiety keep a journal and write what you eat, and what you are doing, where you are going, who you talk to etc with times and date...and then note down each time this happens to you and see if you can find a pattern to what triggers it

StrawberrySquash · 09/12/2018 10:39

Could it be POTS?en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postural_orthostatic_tachycardia_syndrome

laura33new · 09/12/2018 10:43

It's gone away now.
Had all the tests ,blood, heart etc and all are normal.
I wake up now on a morning terrified it's going to happen and it does ..I'm in such a routine with it.
I was on holiday for 2 days in August and it didn't happen when I was away.

OP posts:
laura33new · 09/12/2018 10:43

I don't drink caffeine

YeOldeTrout · 09/12/2018 10:45

You're ruling everything else out, anxiety can explain the symptoms, you have relevant history. Why do you resist this diagnosis?

laura33new · 09/12/2018 10:47

It's strange because I was later going upstairs this morning so it didn't start till later

OP posts:
laura33new · 09/12/2018 10:47

I know doctors can miss things tho!

Lynne45 · 09/12/2018 10:51

I have exactly the same. I think it might be caused by low iron levels for me (had issues in the past).
It’s weird it didn’t happen on your holiday, maybe it is stress/anxiety related at home?

YeOldeTrout · 09/12/2018 10:53

timing doesn't matter if it's anxiety about going to work the timing is relevant to when in your routine you're thinking about going to work, not whether that time is 9am or 10am.

Silkie2 · 09/12/2018 11:00

Does going upstairs mean making all the beds because the rest of the family can't be bothered, or some similar annoyance, the suppressed anger setting off anxiety?
Or are you low level anxious and the physical effort makes your heart pound?
Try meditating for at least 20 mins , possibly twice that and see if the feelings don't arise then. Which would point to it being anxiety.

MacarenaFerreiro · 09/12/2018 11:09

I wake up now on a morning terrified it's going to happen and it does ..I'm in such a routine with it.

Sounds like it's turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

bridgetreilly · 09/12/2018 11:13

Well, obviously it's not normal, but your doctor has already diagnosed the cause. The fact that you didn't get it on holiday confirms that it's not a physiological problem. OP, are you getting treatment for your anxiety?

laura33new · 09/12/2018 11:59

My anxiety hasn't been great lately but it hasn't been great for 8 years tbh.
This has been ongoing about 6 years..goes through phases of going and coming back.
When one thing goes I get another.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 09/12/2018 12:56

How old are you?
Racing heart and anxiety etc can be symptoms of menopause and are frequently misdiagnosed.

laura33new · 09/12/2018 13:04

I'm 33

laura33new · 10/12/2018 09:20

I think anxiety is what is in your head - I suffer myself. Do something like singing Xmas carols loudly at the top of your voice all the way up the stairs. If you are totally concentrating on something else the auto response to climbing the stairs might be kept at bay.
