To not allow phone chargers to be on overnight?

Massive issues with adult and teen DC over this. Not only phones but ipads as well.

I have told them I do not want them to be charged overnight as the plugs heat up and they are a fire risk.

They are arguing as they never let devices charge enough in the day as they're always on them.

Sick of same old bullshit argument every night when I just want to get into bedAngry.

So AIBU?

Just to add I am the type to unplug everything but the fridge overnight after a relatives house was burned down due something being left plugged in and fire officer said always unplug everything it's possible to at night.

So do you unplug the fire alarms? And the security alarms and the street lights and the power plant down the road? What about the fridge and the boiler? And the lamp next to you?

Meangirls36 · 09/12/2018 12:58

Do you go around turning off peoples medical equipment that is plugged into the wall because of the fire risk? Do you go into computer labs that are in built up areas turn them off saying sorry deary the fire risk!!

Mascarponeandwine · 09/12/2018 12:59

Meangirls36 Don’t be an idiot. anyone sensible would ask for a free check from the fire service to advise them on how to be as safe as possible and minimise fire risk. Different appliances use different levels of power, have different levels of fire risk. And charging anything that has a lithium ion battery always has a risk of exploding, no matter how small.

'And charging anything that has a lithium ion battery always has a risk of exploding, no matter how small.'

At last

Thank you

If I die I die! I need my phone!

Oh dear.

cancla · 09/12/2018 13:06

I'm not sure you understand what a risk assessment is.

I'm not going to waste my time trying to explain as something tells me if I die I die, I need my phone you don't have the level of understanding required.

Meangirls36 · 09/12/2018 13:09

Then why can you use an Xbox controller while its charging from a cable and why can you use your phone when its in your hand all day? There is a risk from anything electrical starting a fire. They can happen in the walls or anywhere.

Meangirls36 · 09/12/2018 13:13

When did she say she had done any kind of risk assessment? And if I die I die was a joke. I just feel like the risk of my family not being able to get a hold of me or not being able to use my phone in an emergency is worth the risk. Especially seeing as my phone stops charging when full.

Meangirls36 · 09/12/2018 13:15

A full risk assessment would involve an electrician testing every piece of electrical equipment yearly.

cancla · 09/12/2018 13:23

No. That would be full electrical testing. A risk assessment is something different.

Meangirls36 · 09/12/2018 13:28

Yes your right

Mrsbird311 · 09/12/2018 13:53

You aren’t wrong I know two fires that started at night one a phone charger the other a laptop overheating, the first caused several flats to burn down and people lost everything, I’m like that when people go to bed or out leaving the tumble dryer on!! That was what burnt terry Wigan’s house down!!

Reallybadidea · 09/12/2018 14:05

Maybe we should all get one of these www.firststopsafety.co.uk/Help/Default.aspx?Page=PAT%20Testers&gclid=CjwKCAiAl7PgBRBWEiwAzFhmmtyK2jAzjHhqfiJqXtVavOmPfXbMx9p04JWgH8_pDi12dBIClv_eQBoC9-EQAvD_BwE and test all our appliances on a regular basis. Maybe every time you use them. Not sure how you'd test the tester to be make sure it won't catch fire though Grin

Perhaps they could just do something else for a while in the daytime while their devices are charging!

danni0509 · 09/12/2018 15:12

I don't charge overnight I always turn sockets off before bed and check.

MrMeSeeks · 09/12/2018 16:06

Yanbu.
Also for all the people saying its only the cheap chargers, ive had 2 apple chargers that actually blew up ( one whilst i was using it) and my old phone used to get red hot whilst on charge.
I never charge over night, have seen what can happen!

Shriek · 09/12/2018 17:39

If I die I die, I need my phone

Is that supposed to be a joke. It genuinely sounds like someone taking the piss.

Why take obvious risks.

A fire can kill you before you even know about it, your babies, especially so, and your animals and you, all because you had to charge your phone overnight instead of in the evening before bed, or your house and family are gone because you didn't want to miss that series on telly.

I have got rid of my tumbler and won't get another because of eco issues, but will (after seeing that fire incident graph) disconnect washing machine (and not wash at night any more), don't have kettle anyway, but the fridge freezer is the biggest issue, as that clearly has to be permanently connected, but at least I will have minimised every possible way I can.

What's annoying is how inaccessible many of my plug sockets are!

RollaCola84 · 09/12/2018 17:40

If your devices and plugs are heating up when charging there's something wrong with them. I charge my phone overnight and have done for about 15yrs, never felt a device or plug get hot.

Shriek · 09/12/2018 17:42

My iPhone gets hot when in use, do iphones pose a high risk.
Same another device.
I do have a wire that gets hot, so will quit that one

Actually the chargers generate their own heat as they transform the power. That's normal.

MrsGollach · 09/12/2018 23:42

I give up. Really.

Jeepy · 10/12/2018 17:28

I'm with you, it causes disagreements here too as I think the broadband thingy should be unplugged too, but it causes 'issues'...

LavendarLove · 10/12/2018 17:34

Sorry I haven't read all the messages but my Samsung with original supplied charger burst into flames overnight, we were lucky we woke straight up but it was very scary and could have been a lot worse. I will try to dig out the photo of damage, Samsung replaced the phone and gave us refund, they were full of apologies especially when they discovered the charger was original and not a cheap one from eBay. Not worth the risk x

RedPanda2 · 10/12/2018 17:35

I've changed all my plug sockets to ones that have USB ports. Not sure if they're safer but you don't turn them on/off and the small amount of electricity they produce is unlikely to start a fire. Could you do this? They're quite cheap it's the fitting that may cost.
