Has anyone sliced/damaged the ligament in their finger? ***WARNING potentially gross picture inside***

4 weeks ago I got called into my sons school because he sliced his finger open with a knife while mucking around during foodtech Hmm

It was small but nasty and I could clearly see the ligaments.

I took him straight to minor injuries who cleaned it up, glued it and sent us on our way.

A week ago, he showed me that he could no longer bend the end of his finger. But it seemed very minor and at this point the cut had healed. I spoke to my mum who is a HCP and she seemed to think there isn't no much they can do now it's healed and it's a small finger as opposed to his hand or index finger.

Now he is experiencing pain in his hand and pain up and down that finger.
I'm making an appointment for first thing Monday but in the mean time I wondered if anyone had done the same or child or partner had done the same and experienced a late aftermath of pain like DS is?

I have a picture of the cut if it helps but it seriously isn't for the faint hearted. 🤢

Never sliced them but have had a lot of tendon and ligament injuries through climbing

They take bloody ages to heal, and reduced movement and follow up pain are common.

I'd definitely get it checked out by someone who knows more than matey off the Internet though

ThatOneHurt · 08/12/2018 14:40

As I mentioned in my OP, I'm making an appointment first thing Monday morning and was only here for other people's experiences.
It's reassuring to hear someone else say that it takes ages to heal because that's what I've been saying to him.
It appears to be getting worse over time tough.

I put a bread knife through mine about a year ago, was painful for months. It's still not right now and is numb and tingly if he's damaged nerves and ligaments it's pretty normal I'm afraid. X

I had to have surgery after slicing my hand as a ligament has to be reattached. Don’t be surprised if they send you to the nearest plastics department for hand surgery!

ThatOneHurt · 08/12/2018 14:45

xJunes88 that's been exactly my thinking, I think that might be what the doctor will say as well. Thank uouz

Inglorious you sliced your hand though?

This is just his little finger. I told him he was bloody lucky it wasn't his hand because it might have needed sugery.

The thing with deep cuts on hands or fingers is there isn't a lot of anything in there to cut that isn't pretty vital

When tendons get damaged they can shorten a bit and they need to stretch back out again a bit (which hurts and limits movement) and that takes a long time owing to the fact they have comparatively poor blood supply compared to other bits of your body

If anything vital was cut right through then he'd have way more noticeable issues I think

Hezz · 08/12/2018 14:51

Post the photo if you like. He will possibly need an op to reattach it if it's not been done

EnglishRose13 · 08/12/2018 15:03

I only came here for the photo.

Hope your son gets better soon!

OrcinusOrca · 08/12/2018 15:13

Is it definitely healed? My DH has a sore on his middle knuckle and developed pain even when it looked healed. Turned out to be an infection and you could see the red tracking up his arm if you looked really carefully.

I am not a HCP and have no idea about ligaments, but thought I'd mention in case. Hope they can help on Monday.

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 08/12/2018 15:14

.

ThatOneHurt · 08/12/2018 15:19

I haven't looked recently but when I did, it looked pretty well healed. I will have another look though.

My daughter recently had an operation for ruptured ligaments in her finger, it's really unusual injury apparently. The op was a month ago, her hand is still in a sling with a support to stop the end of the finger bending, we took it off the other day to wash her hand and she had to hold it so it didn't bend, I don't think the operation has worked at all.

Anyway, my point is that they can operate, we didn't have it done locally as it's very specialised, you need to get a referral to a plastics department, we saw the hand specialist but he referred her to plastics as didn't feel confident doing the op.

ThatOneHurt · 08/12/2018 15:24

Thanks @Allice. Was your daughters cut like the picture I posted? Or was her worse? Which finger did she damage?

PumpkinPie2016 · 08/12/2018 15:28

Not done it myself but it may well new surgery.
A lot more extreme than your son but my dad is missing two fingers on his dominant hand after a crush accident years ago. He had surgery at the time followed by physio. The good news is that despite the horrendous injury he did regain full use of his hand so I'm sure with the right treatment your son will recover Smile

Allice · 08/12/2018 15:35

Sorry, should have said it wasn't cut. Her ligament ruptured, would that be a tear? I'm not sure. She did it at games and the end of her finger was permanently down, was the ring finger of her left hand.
She got severe pain in it when it was cold, guess it was just in the wrong place

ThatOneHurt · 08/12/2018 16:16

When it's cold is when DS is complaining it hurts.
Your daughters sounds more severe than what my DS has done.
Hopefully just time will heal DS's pain at least. We've already given up hope that he will be able to bend the end of it.

DH sliced his tendon and nerve in 2 catching a glass that smashed. He ended up having a 5 hour operation to repair, his hand splinted into a highly amusing "making a duck shadow puppet" position for about 6 weeks and lots of physio.

The pain was obviously immediate, but the severity of the tendon was diagnosed by a lack of movement in certain joints of the finger. So you're doing the right thing by going to see the doc.

xJune88 · 08/12/2018 19:23

That looks just like mine did!! And here's my scar. It went grissly and all lumpy for about 7 months felt like it hadn't healed inside at all. Yeah mine still hurts in the cold too! Hopefully it heals back together nicely. It is bloody painful though! X

My finger still tingles now every time I touch it and has limited at the top

xJune88 · 08/12/2018 19:24

Sorry *limited feeling

ferrier · 08/12/2018 19:30

Not quite the same but I broke my toe a few years ago. It was undiagnosed at the time. It's not a big problem now but it doesn't have the same movement that the other toes have and does hurt a little sometimes, especially when it's cold.

Serin · 08/12/2018 19:59

There is no such thing as "only a little finger", the little finger controls a lot of your grip strength. Try making a fist leaving your little finger out and see how weak it is.
With the greatest respect to your mum, he needs seeing in a hand therapy clinic, she is wrong that there is "nothing that can be done" and if he needs treatment then the sooner he starts the better. Instead of leaving it until scar tissue is a problem.

Serin · 08/12/2018 20:01

xJune88 I would Google swan neck deformity and go back to your GO with that.

Serin · 08/12/2018 20:02

Sorry GP (bloody autocorrect)
