To remove a persons laundry?

QueenOfIce · 08/12/2018 11:43

Staying in a hotel for work which has guest laundry facilities. 6 washing machines (all now empty) and 6 dryers all full.

2 of them have not been on since I put my washing in 30 mins ago and as I have been sat waiting for my laundry no one has been in to check on any machines.

I now need a dryer, would it be wrong of me to unload someone's laundry (if it's dry) and put mine in?

I always feel weird about stuff like this, I wouldn't want a stranger touching my washing but at the same time if I put stuff in and didn't return in a decent amount of time how long does a person have to wait?

If it is in the dryer, and finished I would fold it into a basket, and use the machine.
You can always chuck it back in when your finished is need be.

knittedjest · 08/12/2018 11:46

Where would you put their clothes? If your respectful about it I don't see why not but if not and the other person returns before you do you might not like what happens to your clothes.

Quizshowaddict · 08/12/2018 11:49

They might have overestimated how long the cycle takes. I admit I haven't used a launderette for decades but we did used to empty the dryers if the person wasn't there to do it themselves.

Is there a basket you can use to put it in? If there isn't, I'm afraid I'd leave it. It feels a lot more intrusive if you have to go through it all & fold it up into a pile somewhere, rather than just scooping it all into a basket.

ladybee28 · 08/12/2018 11:50

Definitely not.

I'm a stickler for respecting other people's time in shared facilities and can't stand it when people don't monitor their stuff in washers/dryers etc.

Bung it in a basket and put yours in.

Absoblimminlutely.

And @mummmy2017 is a MUCH nicer person than me –I certainly wouldn't be folding someone else's smalls Grin

QueenOfIce · 08/12/2018 11:50

There's baskets, I'm not going to fold someone else's laundry. I could be sitting here hours. Why are people so bloody inconsiderate.

OP posts:
mummmy2017 · 08/12/2018 11:51

Well not the smalls...
But just think if dry and folded, they have less to complain about...

Cherries101 · 08/12/2018 11:53

Just tip it out in a basket and put that basket on top of the washing machine.

Notthisnotthat · 08/12/2018 11:53

I would take out dry washing if there was somewhere to put it, basket, shelf, big ikea bag... I've done it in other hotels.

Cherries101 · 08/12/2018 11:54

Who gives a fuck if they complain? If in a hotel and they kick off complain to the management and demand a refund.

QueenOfIce · 08/12/2018 11:54

I feel like I'm about to commit a cardinal sin!

mummmy2017 · 08/12/2018 12:03

Have you done the dirty deed yet?
Lol wonder if they pack the seduction kit... Or grundies.

QueenOfIce · 08/12/2018 12:06

I haven't done it yet, the gym is right behind me so everyone can see and I'm thinking what if it's someone in the gym and they spot me shifting their smalls.

Haven’t used a laundrette since I was a student but if I needed a dryer and someone’s had finished and they were niwhere to be seen I would empty ut and put my wet clothes in - if they came back tough

Musicalmistress · 08/12/2018 12:25

I often use the launderette facilities when visiting caravan sites & will remove a load that’s finished - into a basket if available or neatly on top of the machine. Never had anyone complain & don’t mind if someone does the same with ours.

Alfie190 · 08/12/2018 12:26

It is fine to empty somebody else's laundry into a basket and use the machine. I think the etiquette is to give them some opportunity to come back and empty it themselves, i.e. don't empty the minute the drier finishes. But as that is not the case here, you should feel free to go ahead.

TulipsTwoLips · 08/12/2018 12:31

Don't fold! That's horribly intrusive!

QueenOfIce · 08/12/2018 12:42

I did it and 5 mins later the guy shows up. He been in the gym leaving the machine finished for over 30 mins. He knows it's me seems he has 4 of the 6 dryers. I'm getting a stare down. Grin

I lived in flats with shared laundry facilities in basement and this happened all the time. I have been both the late returnee and the mover outer of the previous person’s wash. Definitely when you don’t collect on time you’re at fault, you expect your stuff to have been moved out and you should apologise if you see the person you’ve inconvenienced (and made touch your pants, albeit clean). As remover, putting it somewhere visible where it won’t get dirty or stood on is the way to go. Definitely don’t fold it, it takes up your time and also, from the other person’s point of view, means you have seen and touched each and every piece of their clothing rather than picking up an amorphous bundle where you touch a few edges which I always deemed more invasive. But mainly, don’t waste your time.

To conclude, there is no question that a late returnee has any grounds to moan at the mover Smile

FishFingersAndCustard11 · 08/12/2018 12:53

Someone done this to my mum when I was younger, we were living in emergency accommodation and we had shared washing machines and tumble dryers. She set a timer on her phone for the length of the washing machine, but had to pop out for an errand so the washing sat in the machine 20 minutes after it had finished. Someone took our washing out and stole most of it 🙃 leaving behind only our underwear.

theworldistoosmall · 08/12/2018 13:26

He was using 4 driers? Cheeky bastard. Let him stare.

Topseyt · 08/12/2018 14:52

Don't feel guilty. Cheeky sod cannot hog all of the machines.

On the thankfully rare occasions when I have had to use launderettes I have unloaded other people's stuff into a basket if it otherwise blocked upva machine I needed and was obviously finished.

Their fault for leaving it like that in the first place.

steff13 · 08/12/2018 14:55

As long as you put it in a basket and didn't dump it on the floor, I don't see how he could complain.
