I'm a nurse. I work with a young, Muslim girl who chooses to wear a niqab (the only one who does in our section). She removes it as she enters the hospital and puts it on again as she leaves. She never wears it on the wards etc.

Every Friday, we have a debrief and it was mentioned, in a general sort of way, that wearing a niqab hinders communication and puts up a barrier. It is also very unprofessional. AIBU to think that, if they have a problem, they should have pulled her to on side and had a quiet word?

That’s incredible OP! You drive a London bus, work in transport, teach AND managed to retrain as a nurse in the space of a few months?

ghostyslovesheets · 08/12/2018 12:37

how odd Confused

JamForBrains Thu 22-Mar-18 19:24:16

So glad I drive a London bus. They are cashless.

Bettyspants · 08/12/2018 12:38

Hmmm.....not even allowed surgical masks? Interested in your infection control issues.....

DoneLikeAKipper · 08/12/2018 12:55

Jamforbrains is a very apt username for someone who can’t remember what job they have.

alansleftfoot · 08/12/2018 14:24

Do you drive the bus on your way to your hospital shift or on the way back ????

BishopBrennansArse · 08/12/2018 14:30

If she doesn't wear it at work it's absolutely none of their business and I'd really hope she makes a formal complaint.

Fiveletters · 08/12/2018 14:36

Grin funny

RibbonAurora · 08/12/2018 15:11

Fiveletters Grin
Yes, it's alway hilarious when an at attempt at goady, dog-whistling gets foiled by a name change fail on the part of the innocently just asking 'is racist?' OP.

MrsDrudge · 08/12/2018 15:19

Healthcare professionals sometimes wear clinical face masks which hide their faces and could therefore be said to hamper communication s much as a niqab. I think it’s victimisation and racist to address this publicly, especially as the person doesn’t wear it at work. (I am a 60 year old white Christian by the way). I’m actually appalled at this attitude.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 08/12/2018 15:28

Well that went swimmingly Grin

Fiveletters · 08/12/2018 16:15

@ribbonaurora I’m unsure of your tone.

I’d tried to copy in @alansleftfoot’s comment which is what I was referring to, but I failed!

JamForBrains · 09/12/2018 07:16

I was never a bus driver. I was a teacher for a few years before retraining as a nurse.

JamForBrains · 09/12/2018 07:18

@lifesabeach
As far as we know it was just our department.

JamForBrains · 09/12/2018 07:20

@ghostlylovesheets
That is odd. I didn't change my name until September 😲

JamForBrains · 09/12/2018 07:24

@bettyspants
I dont work in theatre. When you a treating patients on the wards you don't need to wear surgical masks.

Bettyspants · 09/12/2018 11:01

Jamforbrains I think you've missed the point Confused . Masks are used on wards where there are infection control issues such as air born viruses. I've had to perform a full examination gowned and masked up, some barriers to effective communication there!! Masks are not limited to theatre. I'd be interested in seeing this infomation of yours ....are you driving your bus to work.....?
