Secret panic button behind bed...

Prinstress · 07/12/2018 21:15

My DP just dropped into conversation his parents have a panic button hidden behind their bed that sets off an alarm and alerts a private security firm... He reckons its standard in every house on their estate Confused

They live in a nice 4 bed detached house but it's not a gated community or anything naice nice... AIBU to think this is a bit weird and not something most people have?

What if they accidentally pressed the button during sex?

Fairly sure it's not installed on the end of FIL's cock, so they are probably safe

princesstiasmum · 07/12/2018 21:42

The police put one in my daughters house when her violent ex husband was threatening her,i think its a good idea for all houses

Chocolate1984 · 07/12/2018 21:43

We have one in our house but it's not connected. House was previously owned by older lady who lived alone.

WorraLiberty · 07/12/2018 21:45

We have 2 panic buttons because they came free with the house alarm.

They're not linked to the police though.

ShatnersBassoon · 07/12/2018 21:46

It's not a secret panic button just because they didn't tell you it's there Grin. You're imagining it to be a lot more exciting than they actually are. My mum has a not secret one, and she's not exactly leading life on the edge.

bellsbuss · 07/12/2018 21:51

We've got one, it was in the house when we bought it and all the other houses in our road have them too.

Tiscold · 07/12/2018 21:51

My parents have one, not very exciting all that happens is 4 guys turn up and check they're ok.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 07/12/2018 21:56

We've got two, one in the bedroom and one downstairs. Just linked to the alarm (as I found out when we first moved in and I pressed it to see what happened!). I'd never seen one before in any previous houses.

tenbob · 07/12/2018 21:56

We had a new alarm installed when we moved into our house, and they offered us panic buttons which would be linked to the monitoring service (who will then call the police if they deem in necessary)

We asked where people normally had them
Installed and we were told one by the front door and one by the master bed

We didn't have them fitted but it makes sense that those would be the places people choose for them

Shambu · 07/12/2018 21:59

Gated communities are not 'naice'.

NameChangeToAvoidBeingFound · 07/12/2018 22:08

I'm fairly certain one of my friends parents have this, but they're loaded live in an estate and own 80% of the properties in the village near it. It's bizarre to me because I live in a two up two down semi on a council estate.

Sounds okay to me.

BumbleBeee69 · 07/12/2018 22:23

I have cameras around my entire property, I have an alarm system with panic buttons inside my property that calls a Security Firm too, it's gives us peace of mind.

I'm not sure it's considered unusual now, given that the impression is the Police rarely have the resources to investigate break-ins etc.

Tillytrotter123 · 07/12/2018 22:23

I don’t know anyone who has one but after I was burgled whilst in bed it’s something I think I’ll get. Ive never slept properly since so I don’t think it’s ‘weird,’ just not common.

BumbleBeee69 · 07/12/2018 22:25

being burgled is a despicable crime and I sympathise with everyone who has suffered this vile crime. Flowers

maddiemookins16mum · 07/12/2018 22:26

Jeez, only on MN would this even be considered ‘normal’, let alone people saying ‘oh we have one’ as if it’s the most common thing.

MakeLemonade · 07/12/2018 22:31

We have a control panel with an SOS and 999 button that lives on our bedside table as part of our alarm system. I find it reassuring, especially when I’m here on my own with the children.

BumbleBeee69 · 07/12/2018 22:34

it's becoming more the norm though, there are fantastic systems available now where you can access video cameras in your home via your mobile phone, brilliant things.

It's very common in my area because crime is absolutely rife, so most people who have a house alarm, will spend roughly £100 more for a couple of panic buttons.

They're not all connected to security companies though because that's really quite expensive. Most of them (like mine) just trigger the house alarm.

It's really not just an MN thing.

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 07/12/2018 22:36

There was one in our house (in the main bedroom) when we moved in. We had it disconnected when we had the house rewired.

Since found out that the woman that lived there before had it installed after the wife of a man she had an affair with tried to burn the house down (while the woman was asleep) in the middle of the night by shoving lit matches through the letterbox! Shock

Thehop · 07/12/2018 22:36

My parents have one

WorraLiberty · 07/12/2018 22:37

Actually I read in my local FB group that a house only 8 doors away from me was burgled just last night.

The family were asleep downstairs and the burglars knicked their car keys and drove off with their cars.
