to not get why people like Aldi/Lidl so much?

yes, I know it's really cheap, but, appart from some things, the food just is poor quality. When I last went there, my DH was enthused about how cheap it was, but the eggs, porridge oats, jam, mayonnaise, digestive biscuits, and plums I bought were not good at all. I see why people would shop there if they hadn't got any money, but, if you can afford to, why not go somewhere better?
If anybody can tell me about any things they do well I'm prepared to be convinced.

Lots of posters saying that Aldi fruit and veg goes off a lot faster than other supermarkets. It absolutely does. The reason though, is because it's not sprayed with 101 pesticides and chemicals.

A friend of mine is a fruit and veg manager in Tesco and it was him that told me that. He'll only buy his fruit and veg in Aldi.

BlimeyCalmDown · 07/12/2018 21:34

Their sourdough pizza is lovely and I get all my superfood stuff there like chia seeds, spirulina etc etc. Fruit and veg are good prices and my fussy cat loves their cat food. Oh also their Scottish vintage cheese is amazing, halloumi is also good.

BlimeyCalmDown · 07/12/2018 21:35

The above for Aldi

You're wasting your time. People expect their fruit and veg to last for ages so don't mind what crap it's been sprayed in.

Titsywoo · 07/12/2018 21:38

I really like Aldi. The steaks are cheaper and much better than any of the other supermarkets. I think the food is great quality.

Oysterbabe · 07/12/2018 21:40

I've just swapped to Aldi from Tesco purely because one has opened a few minutes walk from me. I've found it to be fine, I'm happy with the quality and price even if the shopping experience leaves a bit to be desired. Because it's so close I only get food for a couple of days at a time so haven't had any issues with veg going off.

Caprisunorange · 07/12/2018 21:41

That’s not true though Hildazelda. Their fruit isn’t organic unless specified, it’s no different to any other shops fruit.

delboysskinandblister · 07/12/2018 21:45

This particular bar of chocolate is Lidl's equivalent of Cote D'Or - yes, it is THAT good. Xmas Wink

lucydogz that will happen to any egg over time , check the date

YABU

I could easily afford to shop elsewhere, I always shop at Aldi because of the quality, experience and ease.

SalmonLeBon · 07/12/2018 21:50

resent paying for parking at Waitrose

Round here, you pay for Lidl/Asda, not Waitrose.

I keep trying to like Lidl/Aldi but cannot get a lot of the more specialist ingredients for the type of recipes I cook. I like their meats and the premium Christmas products, but the veg/fruit are awful. Virtually rotted by the time I get home (minor exaggeration).

MissCharleyP · 07/12/2018 21:53

I love Lidl chocolate salted caramel nut bars! Also their skyr plain yoghurt (tastes the same wherever you buy), veg and salad is fine if you eat it within a couple of days. Aldi’s bloomer bread is lovely and their salted peanuts and cashews. Bottled water is a damn site cheaper at both as well. We don’t do a full shop there; I refuse to compromise on things like loo roll, tea and butter. As my SIL says it’s a shop where you always have to go to another shop afterwards!

icannotremember · 07/12/2018 21:54

I don't find Aldi to be noticeably poor quality. Just noticeably cheaper. If you don't like Aldi or Lidl don't shop there.

I worked in food factories on uni holidays. You're very often paying for a different label, not higher quality, when you buy more expensive products. But some people like to be fooled in this way.

EssentialHummus · 07/12/2018 21:55

Another one here who can afford to shop elsewhere but chooses Lidl and Aldi. And the nearest Lidl has a self-checkout which deals with the major unpleasant aspect of both places, the long queues and fast checkout staff.

inmyfeelings · 07/12/2018 21:55

I used to feel like this because the layout and shopping experience at my local one put me right off. Now that I moved a lot closer to it I've become a fan and rarely shop elsewhere . I like the oats- they're as good as Quaker oats. Their magnum liquid as good as fairy , Almat detergent as good as fairy / persil, their bakery is fab and I like the seeded small loaf, the brioche is unparalleled and the folded flat breads as good as Sainsbury's . All fruit and veg I've never had a problem with , they're fresh there's a good range . Their hummus , eggs , cheeses , sourdough pizza and tinned beans are all as good as or better than the big brands .

Oysterbabe · 07/12/2018 21:55

I agree the Aldi bloomer bread is so nice. We get through a lot more bread since I started buying it!

BabySharkDooDooDooDoo · 07/12/2018 21:58

I like aldi and lidl they are really good. I shopped in both on thursday and got my weeks messages for just over £40 all in as was roughly £20 in each and my fridge is full as is my big cupboard

An Aldi opened near us recently and I am in love! Firstly it's one of the few places in our European city where we can buy a "clean" chicken ready to roast. Other supermarkets sell them with giblets etc. inside and often only partially defeathered. The chicken is also organic, corn fed, delicious, and cheap.

Secondly, they sell a very luxurious brand of yoghurts that DH adores that previously we could only buy from an expensive delicatessen miles away. They are almost half the price in Aldi.

Good range of breads, all cheap.

Berries are always in stock and great quality, never any mouldly ones. Same price as other supermarkets.

Spicy hummus is delicious and cheap.

The ready made mini quiches are great for quick lunches/dinners at the weekend.

Multipack of Babybel half the price of our other local supermarket (always - not on offer).

And, right now, they sell high quality Stollen from Germany for €4!

I don't buy everything there but it has products that aren't available elsewhere and the quality is excellent.

Julianaa · 07/12/2018 22:07

I took Moser Roth chocolate from Aldi (the milk, white/vanilla, and milk/caramel chip bars) to a meeting at work last week and my colleagues hoovered them up with gusto and were extremely complimentary.

MrsDrudge · 07/12/2018 22:13

Aldi’s version of chocolate hobnobs (Oaties) are as good as, if not better than real hobnobs and half thee price.
Their chocolate is excellent and well priced. As is Xmas Stollen, smoked salmon and cheese. Aldi champagne is award winning.
Fresh fruit and veg always look a bit dry and stale in local branch, I don’t like their bread.
Best is the fake Jo Malone (Faux Malone as we call it). A tenth of the price and almost as nice.

InsomniacAnonymous · 07/12/2018 22:16

For dinner tonight I had Aldi's Deluxe Fish Pie and it was absolutely lovely.

letsdolunch321 · 07/12/2018 22:23

I can do a weekly shop in Aldi for £50/60.00 - this includes lunches and dinners/toiletries & cleaning products. Usually this takes 30:35 mins.

I 💘 Aldi.

bookmum08 · 07/12/2018 22:25

I prefer Iceland for food and Wilkos for household (loo roll /washing up liquid etc) and toiletries.

babysharkah · 07/12/2018 22:27

I've tried so hard and can't do it. I'd rather go to Iceland if was in a budget.

Zara85 · 07/12/2018 22:32

I am a buyer for Aldi so I have to say yes YABU Grin
