Women have been working for free for the last couple of weeks and will be until the end of the year.

However this year it seems to have gone by without much attention :(

backinthebox thank you for the detailed explanation, I should have expected that there was more to it in the airline sector than the simple idea of pilots vs cabin crew - it’s such a complex topic. Apologies that I picked on your industry without knowing it well. I was trying to illustrate the difference between ‘the gender pay gap’ in a company and unequal pay for equal work (which is illegal). There’s so much confusion between the two - you regularly see people saying ‘well our salary scale is published and transparent so we can’t have a gender pay gap’ without understanding that if all the low bands are female and all the high bands are male, that creates the gap.
Anyway, baby is sleeping so I should be sleeping - this topic just fascinates as there are so many facets to it, why do we pay less for traditionally female skills like childcare than male ones like a mechanic for example? How much is it women’s free choice to cut their hours, take the lower paid role where they don’t need to travel etc after children and how much is it the expectation of society that women do it rather than men?

Drwhy you are absolutely correct and I’m so tired of explaining that equal and gender pay are completely different!

It is entirely possible to have a massive gender pay gap but be the most progressive forward thinking company with no equal pay issues at all and vice versa.
