I got one cheap for DS without considering what I was buying

It's essentially 23 figures and one model I believe

Every figure is a white person so far and looks like that will continue to be the case

DS is mixed

He probably won't notice but aibu to think that it wouldn't hurt to have one or two figures that aren't pink skinned included?

I don't really understand why toys haven't caught up with reflecting reality here. The shop I purchased it in I checked the dolls section out as I haven't bought one yet and he's getting too old to appreciate it if I wait another year... every baby doll was also pink skinned

Does plastic cost more if you dye it anything but Caucasian skin colour??

Lego figures I have less issues with as nobody is bright yellow!

I have various different BlockTech figures and the skin colours do vary. If your son wants a bit more actual building the Wilkos Blox calendar is down to £4.

incallthebloodytime · 06/12/2018 10:36

Oh really? That's good to know

Maybe I can find a few to add on if calendar remains pink all through

FissionChips · 06/12/2018 10:45

Search mini figures online, there are loads on eBay that are Lego compatible.

I feel your pain, took me an age to source a mixed baby doll for DD.

PermanentlyFrizzyHairBall · 06/12/2018 10:51

Hadn't thought of this before but YANBU why not have a range of skin colours?

@noVotes no not to prove a point

Any reason why he shouldn't have one if he wants though and be allowed one that reflects his reality?

Looking for a doll that isn't Caucasian is hardly screaming that it's unfair they don't make one armed male lesbian dolls is it? It's 2018

Wow. Being considerate of my child must mean I'm super woke and force him into wellies and tutus

Bog off with your assumptions

OP posts:
incallthebloodytime · 06/12/2018 13:14

You must be tripping if you're seeing them everywhere too...

OP posts:
PermanentlyFrizzyHairBall · 06/12/2018 13:22

They definitely need a one-armed female male lesbian who's dyslexic too. Flexitarian with anxiety and dietary requirements, obvs.

I pity people like you a little bit. How many "one-armed female male lesbian who's dyslexic too. Flexitarian with anxiety and dietary requirements" people do you meet in society? How many people who are non-white do you meet in society? You might not be the most academic person in the world but surely you can understand that people want the characters to represent reality.

You also seem to have a problem with OP buying her DS a doll. I wonder why?

PermanentlyFrizzyHairBall · 06/12/2018 13:24

No. You didn't say he wants one though and, if I had to guess, you'll be more about giving him one (and dressing him in a tutu and wellies) than him wanting one.

I'm sure you're much more well versed in what OP's son likes than OP. If she had been buying a doll for her daughter would you have jumped to question whether her daughter wanted a doll or not? If she'd said she's buying lego would you need to be told explicitly it's because he wants lego? You're making yourself look very very silly. You're very obviously looking for a reason to dislike other people and get offended.

Celebelly · 06/12/2018 13:27

YANBU. There's no need for play figures and dolls to be all white - the children who play with them certainly won't be. And it's natural for children to want to see and play with figures who look like them too.

chillpizza · 06/12/2018 13:27

Cheap Lego is cheap and will always be crap anyway op.

As for biracial dolls try smyths or the entertainer or amazon or eBay any actual toy shop or large multi selling website.

Considering you can now buy medical dolls so children with tubes and pegs feel included a non pink doll isn’t hard to source op. Lego even do a child in a wheelchair figure as well.

SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 06/12/2018 13:29

I bought this calendar for myself and you have a point OP.

And my first one actually WAS one armed as he only came with one Sad

@chillpizza

It actually was the entertainer where I bought the calendar and couldn't see any dolls that weren't pink skinned

To be fair I did look on the website after your post and discovered there are 3 possibilities out of 43 (if I counted correctly Caucasian dolls)

Which likely means that the shop I was in was out of stock...

But shops always seem to be out of stock, or only sell them in their bigger branches and I will be delighted if I ever come across a male baby doll that isnt Caucasian that IS actually in stock somewhere

I'd have to go back and check if there were any male dolls at all, I'm not sure, few if there was- I remember when Timmy tears was a wonderful idea and we haven't really come much further in what's readily available since then out and about in shops

I don’t think he comes with any clothes but they have this little boy on amazon for £10.50

Dolls World Early Moments Boy (Black) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00D3LM6EG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t1scCbYKDSAGA?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Our generation brand have a few black girl dolls not sure if they do boys.

incallthebloodytime · 06/12/2018 14:35

Thanks I've had a look and I'm pleased to see that - reasonably priced too and you can knit or find clothes to fit

Still seems to be a tall order to find "a doll like me" for my son but...

If you've been to say China, do the toyshops there reflect reality? Or Jamaica for example?

Is it a demand problem or a manufacturing problem?

AdamNichol · 06/12/2018 14:59

YANBU. This is actually a serious issue when scaled up.

That Child of our Time series did a thing a few years back, asking the then 3-4yr old kids to vote for the 'nice' people in their class (as shown on picture boards). All the top scorers were white - even shown in the choices of non-white kids.
The kids were then asked to nominate pictures of unknown children who might be 'nice', again, white ruled. The children actually held good friendships across racial boundaries, though. The more detailed explanation for this was that the kids saw a plethora of white positive role models (thru TV, et al), where non-white characters tended to have minor roles with less character development and awareness.
A bit like the everyday sexism stuff, it adds up.

chillpizza · 06/12/2018 15:02

I can’t say I’ve ever visited actual toy shops while aboard but the shops that did have any dolls they all appeared to be Caucasian regardless of the natives in those countries.

Is this obsession with dolls in general a more uk/USA thing maybe?

Playmobil are good for different skin colours/ethnic characters.
You can get 'ethnic' * versions of Baby Born dolls and some of the ones in Argos, Smyths etc. The My Generation dolls are all different colours too. Plus Barbie and Ken have friends in all shapes and colours. But I do agree that the 'white' dolls seem to be the most common type on the shelf and from my
*ethnic is the how he retailers always describe these dolls.
