To ask for your best Christmas buffet nibbles

We are hosting our very first pre Christmas get together for a handful of friends and neighbours and wanted your suggestions for some good food bits to make (or buy) for a simple buffet. We'll be providing mulled wine and people will be mostly standing so nothing that requires eating with a knife and fork! Thanks.

We do a cheese board with sliced baguettes, smoked salmon, pate and green salad. If I was really making an effort, some combination of roast veg and halloumi, coronation chicken, lentil and feta salad, baked ham, pasta salad with mozzarella and pesto, and cold baked salmon.

Chop an onion and mix it into grated cheese with mayo, salt and pepper. Slice a baguette into small rounds and butter each round with the mix. Bake for about 15 mins. It sounds crap but honestly it’s delicious

i Always reckon a great big cottage pie goes down well, can be eaten with just a fork

Little (Jersey royals) skin on potatoes cross cut on the top with a blob of cream cheese and a sprinkle of chives. Delish hot or cold.

Ooh I love the idea of the cheese and onion baguette things. Some nice ideas. More would be great thanks.

Take a flat tortilla wrap, (square if you can find it) spread with cream cheese and thin smoked salmon, roll up and chop into inch long pieces and serve on end... looks really professional! (And delish!)

Vol au vents fell out of fashion, but they are great finger foods, that are filling and you could do lots of different types.

I made fab little ham and egg things a while ago. Using a muffin tin or cupcake tin, butter the holes then cut circles of sliced buttered bread and press them into the dips. Then crack an egg into each one, sprinkle salt and pepper on and bake to set - egg inna breadcup! You can also add a slice of ham inside the bread before adding the egg - hamanegg inna breadcup! You could vary it I suppose by adding some chilli flakes or some chutney or maybe a cherry tomato...

Ooh I'd love some more ideas for ours! I love taking quick easy things but making them miniature size- mini chicken fajitas, mini pizzas, mini stuffed potatoes etc

lilyheather1 · 06/12/2018 19:05

Shredded seafood sticks mixed with seafood sauce inside a voluvont. I realise it sounds grim but I could eat 20 of them.

Crudites. Smoked salmon. Grapes. Humous and pita bread. Crisps. Cheese. Olives. Mini-quiches. Mince pies. Chicken satay skewers.

There was a recipe Nadia Hussein did on her last series as a breakfast dish but I have done it for guests just with salads and pickles. It's called a ham and cheese crown.

You get 2 sheets of puff pastry. Stick them together and brush with ketchup mixed with smoked paprika. Scatter that with cheese and ham or anything else. Roll it up and join the two ends together make cuts and turn each section over so you have a kind of wreath then egg wash, sprinkle with rock salt and sesame seeds and bake for 15 minutes.
