To ask how much you would willingly pay for your work's Christmas Party?

Hohohonooo · 05/12/2018 22:19

I'm not going because of the cost.

Ours is £70 per person, which is for a 3 course meal and all inclusive beer and wine. AIBU to think that's way too much?! For context, I earn £25000 per year, which is fairly typical for my workplace.

How much would you be willing to spend?

So basically for every employee they can either pay £150 in tax or spend it on a party or function instead.

Not exactly - employment expenses are always deductible when calculating taxable profits.

The question is whether it's an employee perk that is liable to income tax.

morningtoncrescent62 · 07/12/2018 19:06

Ours is sliding scale. People on

IAmNotLikeThat · 07/12/2018 19:57

If you are paying it is not a works party. End of.

Donthugmeimscared · 07/12/2018 20:02

I work at a school and it's £10 each with first drink free and buffet. Still dont think I'm going.

nonevernotever · 07/12/2018 20:07

Ours was yesterday. Also public sector. £45 per head for 3 courses and then those my grade and above split the drinks bill between us which was another £50. I don't mind that bit so much because it's a way of thanking my team for their hard work, but as a vegetarian nondrinker the overall cost rankles a bit.

Kemer2018 · 07/12/2018 20:39

Ours was about 30 plus drinks plus cab so i declined. Why on earth should i spend my hard earned for an event not of my choosing with folk i see enough of at work? Odd.
Unfortunately, for reasons i cannot fathom, partner is paying for us both to attend his.....and he hates his job and managers. So I'm fucking dreading that. 🙄plus the drop off to babysitter is an 80 mile round trip the weekend right before Christmas.

We pay and I call it our work do. Is that ok!? Grin

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 07/12/2018 21:32

It sounds like a reasonable price, but it sounds like you don't want to go, so don't!

thighofrelief · 07/12/2018 21:43

If it's a free lunch during working hours, fine. Otherwise no, i would always have a prior engagement. I want to go home when I'm not being paid!

Newhousenewname · 07/12/2018 21:59

NHS here. £55 for a meal, music etc. In a beautiful venue. Buy your own drinks.
It was the same last year.
All the team want to go and it gets drawn out of a hat who will have to miss it in order to cover night shift.
We are a mixture of band 5, 6 & 7 nurses so salaries 25,000 - 45,000. And 3 consultants on £100,000+. Everyone pays the same and many bring partners so pay double.
We all make an effort. Not quite black tie but nice dresses etc
I’ve never had an Xmas do (or anything) paid for or contributed to by employers.
We see it as an opportunity to let our hair down together after another always difficult year.

PatchworkElmer · 07/12/2018 22:03

We just went to a restaurant this year- I’m now on my way home. Company paid £25 towards food, and all table wine. So the evening cost me £12.50 (the balance of my food). I wouldn’t want to pay much more for an event that is an ‘effort’ for me, tbh.

TheClitterati · 07/12/2018 22:21

My employer pays.

But if I was on £25k like fuck I'd be paying £70 in the most expensive month of the year to get pissed with people I see every day.

Yeah Nah.

Thesmallthings · 07/12/2018 22:27

Last year our boss paid for a 3 course meal at a lovely pub.

This year we've decided to go to the faces 3 course meal again but having to pay 65 each.

But we're a small team of 9 (nursery) and we enjoy each other's company and regularly go out together to celebrate birthdays / events.
It was a bit much to pay in one go so my boss paid for it and allowed us who needed to pay bit by bit.

We're planning on taking vodka to pour into the water jugs like they did a couple of years ago.

Chottie · 08/12/2018 01:24

Local Authority here too, it is costing everyone £8.95 for a two course lunch in a local pub.

OhTheRoses · 08/12/2018 04:15

Quasi public sector. £10 contribtion. Nice meal in a nice restaurant at about £30ph, so £20 ph contribution. Team of 20. I pick up the drinks bill. A pre dinner round and plenty of wine with the meal. My team leaders help out the staff on £25k.

Celebrations often end with some of the team clubbing which they fund themselves and is not a "work" event.

Malwoddy · 08/12/2018 04:40

I've never heard of anywhere charging for attendance at a work party before Shock

midsummabreak · 08/12/2018 04:46

So correct me if I am wrong but isnt every work function claimable on tax, and there fore coming out of taxpayers pockets?? It is usually justified as well worth the cost as without any allowances made for team building, it often becomes a crap place to work

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/12/2018 04:52

I work in a very small team of 9. We had a discussion about what we wanted to do and then decided on a venue. We're paying £40 each for a 3 course meal and disco. Then there will be drinks to buy. So probably £60- £70 depending on how much I drink.

I work in the public sector and have never had a free Christmas event. I wouldn't expect to.

Mrstwiddle · 08/12/2018 04:57

I remember my first Christmas working at a sixth form college, I couldn’t believe that they expected everyone to pay £2 to have a cooked lunch in the college canteen as our compulsory “Christmas party”

Refused to pay...it was the principle!...and instead went with colleague to local pub, turned up at the so called party as we had to listen to the principal make a very tedious speech.

Mrstwiddle · 08/12/2018 04:58

Turned up at the end, that should say.

Lovelydovey · 08/12/2018 05:36

I paid £40 for a 3 course meal with wine - except I don’t drink and didn’t get my chosen dessert. I left when one of my colleagues started a game of fuck, marry, kill using people we work with. Not going next year.

Flowerpot2005 · 08/12/2018 05:36

£0

I hate the fuckers I work with.

Mummadeeze · 08/12/2018 06:07

£70 sounds like too much to me. I would have thought going for Christmas drinks and controlling your own budget would be easier for people.

kennycat · 08/12/2018 07:26

£70 is horrendously expensive. Do you actually like these people?!

I'd spend a maximum of £30 but I'd be a bit loath to spend that tbh.

One of the many benefits of being a SAHM is that I don't have to worry about this type of thing. I get a little sad when I read magazine articles about the perfect work to party outfit and sparkly make up and stuff but I get over myself pretty quickly!

lljkk · 08/12/2018 07:32

I work for public sector. We have option of £30/head Xmas lunch which is informally organised (we pay). Many in the room earn twice as much as OP. I don't earn that much but still too miserly to pay. Happily not that sociable.
