Some people really are miserable bastards

At work today went to the loo.

Noticed that someone had placed a little basket with ribbons round it containing tampons and pads etc on the back of the loo and I must admit I was thinking how really sweet that was and I mentioned it to my colleagues on my return.

Turns out our Union (ribbons were Union colours) have been doing it all over the county not sure why (presume connected to international year of the woman and gaining the vote etc) but I think it’s a really lovely idea.

Women from another team comes in moaning that “well if we let service users use that toilet they’ll all get stolen and they will probably take the basket too” (loo is next to the conference room.

I though you awful old cow - if anyone is that desperate that they need to nick some free tampons then be my bloody guest.

This is a women who has spent a day at “work” (public sector) this week decorating her desk with tinsel and a Christmas tree.

Humph Sad

Why are people

"Bloody guest" they clearly would be if they were nicking tampons.

Some people are just that tight, OP, can you imagine what they're like with their own stuff if they're that mean with stuff that doesn't belong to them or affect them in any way? We have a bowl filled with mini candy canes and Hershey kisses on our lobby desk. It's just a little Christmas treat and there for anyone to help themselves. Coworker was huffing yesterday that she saw two visiting sales reps taking a handful each. And?
She's the same about the baskets of san pro in the women's bathrooms supplied by our employers for the benefit of staff and visitors and any snacks set out by the coffee machines for people to help themselves.
I don't get it, she isn't paying for these things, they're not hers why does it bother her so much that people take them?

@Feefeetrixabelle , I take your point about a needle and thread but if you have a old t-shirt, a old towel and an old fleece jumper, some Velcro off an old bag or something or a safety pin, you can make a reusable sanitary towel. Plus scissors needle and thread. Again, I am not saying that this is the solution to period poverty. That's a massive issue and a national disgrace that needs more attention. But I am just suggesting it as something an individual might want to consider. Loads of online tutorials.

Feefeetrixabelle · 07/12/2018 14:38

@bellinisurge again your presuming people have an old t shirt, old towel, old fleece jumper and an old bag. And the ability to get them cleaned.

I’m not in poverty anymore but I don’t have an old fleece jumper or an old bag. Everything I have gets used.

bellinisurge · 07/12/2018 14:43

@Feefeetrixabelle - it was just a suggestion. You can get a lot of this stuff at charity shops; pool resources for getting it with a mate. Again. Again. Again. I'm not saying it's the solution to period poverty but it's an idea. A suggestion. Nothing more. And better than not going to school.

Feefeetrixabelle · 07/12/2018 14:51

And again your presuming people can afford a charity shop. If you can’t afford a tampon or sanitary towel you can’t afford the things you’re suggesting.

elephantoverthehill · 07/12/2018 14:56

I just hope this initiative continues. If it does it will no longer have the 'novelty' factor and people who don't need to, will not feel the need 'to stock up'. It was the same when real toilet paper started being available outside of the home, folks would devise methods of nicking it and concealing it.

bellinisurge · 07/12/2018 15:37

@Feefeetrixabelle . Ok. As I said. Bigger problem.

MrsDylanBlue · 07/12/2018 18:39

bellinisurge

A lot of people in poverty are also depressed or have other mental health issues and don’t have the motivation or inclination to be resourceful or innovative.

It’s as much as they can do to get out of bed in the morning never mind start knocking up some sanitary towels.

bellinisurge · 07/12/2018 19:15

Don't need any lectures on either poverty or depression. Have personal experience of both.

bellinisurge · 07/12/2018 19:18

If you think I am suggesting reusables as a solution to period poverty, you haven't read my posts on this thread and are just seeing what you want.

cushioncovers · 07/12/2018 19:21

I would probably have said the same as the miserable cow tbh. I work in a hospital and everything gets stolen. And I mean everything. If it ain't nailed down someone will take it.

Winebottle · 07/12/2018 19:52

I agree with her and I think the thread on here about champagne demonstrates that.

It doesn't have much to do with poverty. If something is free, a lot of people will pocket a load.
