AIBU to employ a debt collector to chase my errant builder?

In brief: we employed a builder and stupidly paid him in advance of him completing the work. He has since done a runner, Ltd co in liquidation (no assets) and he is trying to make himself bankrupt. It's "common knowledge" that him and his wife have plenty of assets.

I've got nowhere with the usual route and thinking of employing a debt collector to go after the £75K he owes us.

What are the watch outs and pitfalls? I have bad anxiety and am worried about there being comebacks on me. The ones I have looked at online all say they are regulated and legal. The builder is not a nice man and i am concerned about repercussions. Then again we have lost our entire life savings and i can't just sit by and do nothing :(

Does anyone have any advice?

Check with a solicitor

Limited company means that unfortunately. I got a ccj against a builder once - he never had to pay a penny. Just kept restarting with different company name Angry

So before you waste your money, check he will actually have to pay. My ccj was unenforceable against the builder.

You gave your entire life savings of £75k to a tradesman upfront? Yeah not surprised he's fucked off Hmm
